   Hey Eyrie folks.

Yeah I too am one of the displaced children of NorthPoint DSL services..
Darn AT&T for buying em...
Anyways it sounds like you guys are getting the jerk around. I got Verizon
DSL equipment today. I called em on the 30th of March.
My service will be online by this coming saturday! Also I needed the business
DSL no less!!!

BTW check out Earthlink. They offering a 1.5 x 128 speed DSL for like $50
which I'd get IF they were lining the cables out here in good ole Danvers,
Mass. Hey we don't even got cable modems yet we got AT&T cablevision.

Sides we whom post here on Eyrie obviously are big fans who sure as hell
don't wanna see this site go offline.

and where did he get his connectivity, you ask?

he was a senior network engineer. at NorthPoint. ;)

They're supposed to be here Tuesday to install our new loop.

That's ADSL though, which isn't of use for what we need.

They'll be there... about the same time as you are 1. in the shower 2. on the john or 3. at the store for 5 minutes to get some needed item

Same rule applies for the cable company, any utility that needs to visit you really, and any package you must sign for.

   Verizon is EVIL! Verizon screwed up my home DSL service for almost a year! They wouldn't let go of the line so we could get Telocity (another DSL carrier).

PUC == Public Utilities Commission

Telcos are a regulated industry, they have to answer to the PUC in each state. The PUC sets the regulations and tarriffs for the state, and handles enforcement and penalties, etc.

Is net access covered under their regulations though? If this was your POTS line, I could see it, but I'm not sure they'll do much mroe than say 'Oh, yes, that is rotten, we will put it in the queue' and promptly toss it away.

Net access - no. Providing copper - yes.

The interface of ILEC (Verizon) and CLEC (Covad) is one of the most heavily regulated.

   I hate to say this but Verizion screwed up my set-up date. I'm in the
same boat as Eyrie.

I was given the date of april 13... Well due to some "technical" issues
on switching the line over.. I'm riding 56K until the 23rd....

   I, too, am one of the many who got his nice net pipe chopped off at the knees because Northpoint went kaboom. No warning at all. Grr. Woke up one morning and the roomies said "we have no internet." Now we're using a 56k dialup run thru ipmasq for all the house boxen (3 servers, 4 PCs). The pain...

We're trying to get a new line through Covad. Last we heard, our house is "in the queue." Doesn't that inspire confidence? *rolls eyes* From what I hear Covad will be a dead fish in another year or so, too. Sounds like it's all going to end up in the hands of the phone companies again.

What I find amusing is how the California PUC is making all kinds of noises about this, telling Northpoint that they must keep their lines up until people have time to switch. Northpoint's response was "Keep them up with what? We didn't own the lines. They were already taken away from us!" Politics. :-P

"We don't have to care. We're the Phone Company."

Maybe it's a good thing I don't have DSL available in my area. The ineptitude of the telcos in my city (Qwest, AT&T and McLeod), plus with some of the ISPs here chomping at the bit to offer DSL, the combination would make Eyrie's situation look like a friendly discussion over afternoon tea.

Fortunately, we do have @Home in my town. OK for surfing, but totally sucks for home based web-hosting.
