<Truss> Well, geez. Whoever wrote that article didn't do their research.
<Truss> I mean, -everyone- knows "lol" isn't an abbreviation or a word. It's punctuation.
<Truss> It's practically the equivalent of "STOP" from old telegrams.
<Z-Gryphon> snrk

1. "2008.02.22: punctuation revisited"
In response to message #0

<Z-Gryphon> it's very lucky that "LOL" did -not- evolve as a telegraphic end-of-sentence indicator instead of "STOP".
<Z-Gryphon> I mean, it would be -wildly- inappropriate in the case of those telegrams that begin THE SECRETARY OF WAR REGRETS TO INFORM YOU
<Z-Gryphon> also, it occurs to me that if "LOL" were the equivalent of "STOP", then "MESSAGE ENDS" would have to be replace by either "LOLOL" or "ROFL"
<Z-Gryphon> and -then- where would we be
<Truss> I think that's KTHXBYE, actually. :)
<Truss> MGY CQD ZOMG A/S/L 41.46 N. 50.14 W REZ PLZ O HAI ICEBERG SINKING ZOMGWTFBBQ
<Truss> (And yeah, I had to look up the original. :)
<Z-Gryphon> (followed by a quick "OMW" from the Carpathia, one presumes)
