"New idea for speeding up page rendering:"
|
Can we let USERS pick if they want to see other people's 'I'm using ICQ and I'm on!" status? The firewall at work is choking on getting to the server, and there's threads that just won't load as a result of someone having an ICQ # set as a result. Just an idea... -- Geoff Depew - Mephron Haberdasher to Androids, Malakite of Lightning and Angel of Tech Support Professionals (They won't give me LARTs, they say that's restricted to Michael.) |

>Can we let USERS pick if they want to see other people's 'I'm using >ICQ and I'm on!" status? I won't do that, too many user toggles is a pain in the ass. Besides, some of the pages are static HTML. Gryph has been after me to fix this - mirabilis altered their site so the URL DCF uses is broken now. I just haven't gotten to it. Doesn't effect Netscape in Windows at all - the image size is sent so it renders the page just fine, leaving the 'can't find the image' icon in the little box. But I guess Netscape on Linux isn't happy or something. (Which is really a browser bug - a missing image should NEVER delay rendering if the size is set.) -MegaZone, megazone@megazone.org Personal Homepage http://www.megazone.org/ Eyrie Productions FanFic http://www.eyrie-productions.com/ See what I'm selling on eBay |

Mozilla under Linux doesn't seem to have that problem. It does eventually give an "operation timed out" error, but that's it. Derek Andersen

And yes, it does hang there, 'contacting online.mirabilis.com' and will not render the tables. (I've noticed that the 4.x iteration handles the construction of tables remarkably BADLY and if you do a stop in the middle of loading an image in a table, the table will not render at all. But this is the Corporate Standard, and we cannot change it.) -- Geoff Depew - Mephron Haberdasher to Androids, Malakite of Lightning and Angel of Tech Support Professionals (They won't give me LARTs, they say that's restricted to Michael.) |

And yes, it does hang there, >'contacting online.mirabilis.com' and will not render the tables. What happens to me seems to happen across the board - NS4.78, NS6.1 and whatever the latest Mozilla milestone is (which seems functionally identical to NS6, making me wonder what the point is) all do it on big-o's console. I haven't tried it with Opera lately, because Opera has other problems, like rendering the forums entirely in bright blue or leaving out every other icon in the control row for no apparent reason. (NS6.1 under Windows ME does that too, for some bizarre reason. Browsers are freaking weird.) The behavior I usually see with this is that it will render the page with the size box and the "I haven't found this yet" icon there - but if I try to leave the page, it can't move on to the new one until it's given up trying to pull the icon from Mirabilis. I find this doubly annoying for a purely partisan and selfish reason; unable to see the charm of ICQ in the first damn place, I'm irritated at being inconvenienced by a "feature" whose only function is to indicate something to do with it. I have no more use for instant-messaging functions than I have for an anvil. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
