"Recent Anime: Senki Zesshou Symphogear"
|
LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-15 AT 05:08 PM (EST) Hibiki is alive, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. This must be kept in mind throughout, or all that follows will assume a grim and shaggy-dog character that will mislead reader and viewer alike.Tachibana Hibiki is our main character, a cheerful and not-always-that-bright girl who was invited to attend her first concert, only to find it attacked by the menacing Noise, phantasmal monsters whose very touch burns human life away to ash in mere seconds. To save the lives of the fans, the musical duet they were there to see, Zwei Wing, reveal themselves as secret superheroes possessing what we later learn to be Symphogears - fragments of legendary ancient artifacts like Odin's Gungnir, which can be unlocked to grant superpowers via resonant frequencies - through song. Hibiki is one of the last ones out, and one member of Zwei Wing, Kanade, sacrifices her life in a 'swan song' that saves Hibiki, wipes out the Noise attack entirely... And leaves the shattered fragments of her Gungnir implanted, Tony Stark style, in Hibiki's chest cavity. Three years later, Hibiki discovers that she, too, can wield Gungnir as a Symphogear user, and attempts to live up to Kanade's legacy at the side of the surviving member of Zwei Wing, Tsubasa as they come face to face with an orphaned girl, Chris, who's been given her own Symphogear and manipulated into a living weapon by the main villain of the series, who is #1 Double Fine USDA Prime Crazy. I'm serious. Her plan involves the words 'Blow Up The Moon', which is always a sign. So, yeah. Symphogear is a hell of a lot of fun, and more than that, I think that it's a sort of fun that the management here will like even better than I did. All of the main characters - except Hibiki's girlfriend Miku - are at least a little bit crazy, and all but one of them help each other get better throughout the course of the show. If you like Super Robot Protagonists, awesome music, Bruce Lee movies, people who start their shows in a relationship, Magical Girls, the Tower of Babel, or The Wonderful World Of Neon, I'd say you should give Symphogear a shot. And now I'm off to watch the second season. ----- "V, did you do something foolish?" "Yes, and it was glorious." |

>Symphogear is absolutely amazing, I totally recommend watching it to >everyone. Considering the number of subverted magical girl shows these >days with sad endings, this sort of thing is definitely in the >Nanoha/Vividred vein of 'actual happiness and hope and adventure with >friends' stuff. You can literally describe Symphogear's cast in terms of Nanoha characters - Hibiki is Subaru, straight up, Miku is Suzuka, Chris is Angry!Fate, Tsubasa is Sane!Precia, Fine is Jail, etc. But yeah, the actual in-practice style feels very Vividred, although fortunately usually with more restrained camera angles. ----- "V, did you do something foolish?"
