"Recent Youtubists: XboxAhoy"
|
Ahoy's Channel Given the recent post above re: things that put holes in other things, I thought it might be interesting to show you guys video lecturer and all-round interesting chap XboxAhoy. He uses a very interesting style for his videos, interspersing very sparse and powerful graphic design elements with game footage. There is no shrill facecam here. I bring him up largely because of his Iconic Arms series, a potted history of a particular weapon and its appearances in video games. They're pretty cool ten-minute-ish videos, and I learned something, but then again you guys are a bit more knowledgeable about this than me so maybe it'll feel a bit babby's first to you, idk. Of more note, perhaps, are his long-form video essays. Split into five chunks, he's done a couple so far, but my favourite is his Brief History Of Graphics essay. I found that extremely interesting, and you can find the full thing below if you've got three quarters of an hour going spare. =] A Brief History of Graphics (Stuart Brown, 2014-5) Hope you enjoy it. There's a looong time between updates, generally speaking, but it tends to be worth the wait. =] --- "She's old, she's lame, she's barren too, // "She's not worth feed or hay, // "But I'll give her this," - he blew smoke at me - // "She was something in her day." -- Garnet Rogers, Small Victory FiMFiction.net: we might accept blatant porn involving the cast of My Little Pony but as God is my witness we have standards. |

Hmm, sounds interesting. I'll have to check that out. I've lately fallen down the well of the Forgotten Weapons YouTube channel, which is... sort of like someone specially went out and made a YouTube channel for me, in a lot of ways. All the sorts of weird old guns I would have if I had the kind of money it costs to collect that kind of stuff, presented by a mildly snarky guy who doesn't bring a lot of politics into it (this is, if you didn't know, a refreshing rarity among Americans Who Do Guns On the Internet). Ian makes the kind of online gun videos I would make if I made online gun videos (complete with being left-handed and occasionally taking the piss out of the righthander bias in firearms design, something that he does often and with relish in, for instance, his video on the Bren Ten). --G. -><- Benjamin D. Which makes two of us! I REALLY like Forgotten Weapons. And, something has gotten into my head that he's near you somewhere too, although that might be entirely from wishfull thinking. As an aside, something that popped up in the Burgess Folding Shotgun comments that made me laugh uncontrollably. Teddy Roosevelt: "Well, Mr. Damon, what can I do for you today?"
Charlie Damon whips out the folding shotgun. BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM Teddy Roosevelt: "Bully! I'll take a hundred!" Damon was a seller, and exhibition shooter, of the gun, and supposedly met with Roosevelt, at the time Commisioner of the NY Police, carrying the gun, folded, under his coat, loaded with 6 blanks. He pulled it out and fired the gun into the ceiling. ...! Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers! |

I gather from the shooting-range sequences (both on FW and InRange TV) that he's headquartered somewhere in Arizona, which is... not particularly near. However, one of the auction houses he often visits to make videos about stuff they're selling is James D. Julia, Inc., which is a couple of hours from here. >Damon was a seller, and exhibition shooter, of the gun, and supposedly >met with Roosevelt, at the time Commisioner of the NY Police, carrying >the gun, folded, under his coat, loaded with 6 blanks. >Hey, he got the sale. :) He did, and it wasn't a complaint in any way. Mostly background. I just find the "Bully! I'll take a hundred!" so very...Teddy. ...! Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers!
