"WA Legal Code"

Legal statutes, in the context of Washington state law, are referred to by name using the prefix "RCW" followed by the statute number and paragraph/subparagraph location.

It stands for Revised Code of Washington, but every time... EVERY TIME I see reference to my state's legal code, I parse it as "Rabid Crack Weasel".

This leads to a certain amount of cognitive dissonance, as you might expect.

In Maine they're called the Maine Revised Statutes (Annotated). So, for instance, the short-form citation for the Maine law prohibiting the unauthorized carrying of firearms in courthouses is

17-A MRSA ยง 43-1058

To the rest of the world, of course, MRSA stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a.k.a. that disease you really hope you don't catch in the hospital while you're there for something else.

Perhaps because of this, more recent citations I've seen have taken to dropping the "A".

Or anywhere else, for that matter - I've never been hospitalized, and I have it.

You aren't the only one. I do it with a lot of other abbreviations, though.

PSP: is it a handheld gaming system (PlayStation Portable), or is it the health danger of red tide (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning)?
To most Canadians, "CSIS" stands foe "Canadian Secret Intelligence Service", but to me, it means "Computer Science & Information Systems" (the name of the compsci department at my college).
There are at least two high schools in the Greater Vancouver area with names that abbreviate to "PMS": Princess Margaret Secondary, and Port Moody Secondary. The latter's sports-team motto is even "Don't mess with PMS".

I'd say that, to me, it's a painting program(Paint Shop Pro), but I can think of a load of others.

Pennsylvania State Police
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
Physical Security Professional
Power Steering Pump
Any number of "P-something" Socialist Party, such as Popular, Portuguese, and so on.
Poly-saccarine Peptide.

Just off the top of my head. And I'm sure that there are as many for CSIS, PMS, and any of the other combos mentioned.

Legend has it that a journalist once asked a hacker (of the old school) what the "biggest problem facing computing in the 1990s" would be, and the hacker replied "There are only 17,000 three-letter acronyms."

And then Wikipedia invented the disambiguation page, and the problem was solved.

<nod> It's mentioned in the Jargon File, under the "TLA" entry.

FWIW. ;)
