LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-16 AT 10:15 AM (EDT) The lady they have playing Mon Mothma is very Mon Mothma indeed.I think scruffy pilot man is supposed to be Biggs? I don't know who white uniform guy is supposed to be. He doesn't look a lot like Tarkin. I would normally say "he's a Grand Admiral, because Grand Admirals are the only Imperial officers to have a white uniform" but I somehow doubt these new movies care about obscure uniform trivia from the EU. I didn't care for the "I rebel" line. It feels like the sort of thing that comes out of a committee meeting of writers who aren't bad at their jobs, but are just slightly too old and just slightly too corporate to really deliver something punchy. I really wanted someone to tell Jyn "The Rebellion is what the Empire calls us. We're the Alliance to Restore the Republic. We're an army. Armies run on discipline." It might just be me, tho. I could be getting old. I'm starting to lose patience with protagonists who are all "look at me, I'm a mavericky outsider who plays by my own rules and doesn't have a lot of self-control, but you have to put up with it anyway because I'm spayshul." It's started smacking of narcissism to me. (I make exceptions for people who are like that because they're clearly fucked up inside, like Tony Stark.) Jyn rocks the fuck out of a TIE uniform. Old man swordy-sword doesn't seem as neat as they want us to believe he is. The whole thing looks right, in the same way that TFA did and the prequels largely did not. It feels like a Star Wars movie. If it isn't as soulless as TFA was it should be quite enjoyable. My favorite part of this so far has been watching internet fuckboys complain about how this is the second Star Wars movie in a row with a lady protagonist. That warms my heart, it does. More starfighters, please. -Merc Keep Rat |

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-16 AT 10:38 AM (EDT) I have nothing to base this on other than errant wish-listing, but . . .>Old man swordy-sword doesn't seem as neat as they want us to believe >he is. I really hope he's playing as Darth Vader- as in, dressed up "close enough" to pass casual scrutiny, and play on Vader's well-known temper to keep people from investigating closer, and use that to bluff their way in to get the plans. edited to add: I just noticed that I'm actually thinking of a different character- there's a guy in heavy black armor in one shot, who I was thinking of for this bit, not the old guy with the wooden sword. Relatedly, I heard that Ben Mendelsohn (White Cape Guy) is supposed to be an Inquisitor, which would tie in to this idea nicely- he's investigating, but from an angle of "Vader's gone rogue". "This is probably a stupid question, but . . ." |

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-16 AT 10:47 AM (EDT) >>Old man swordy-sword doesn't seem as neat as they want us to believe >>he is. > >I really hope he's playing as Darth Vader- as in, dressed up "close >enough" to pass casual scrutiny, and play on Vader's well-known temper >to keep people from investigating closer, and use that to bluff their >way in to get the plans. Oh! No, I meant the other old man swordy-sword. The asian guy who goes at a squad of stormtroopers with a stick. I know stormtroopers are supposed to be jokes but there are limits. ETA: I see we've played the "edited the OP while I was replying to it" game. I always lose that game. >Relatedly, I heard that Ben Mendelsohn (White Cape Guy) is supposed to >be an Inquisitor, which would tie in to this idea nicely- he's >investigating, but from an angle of "Vader's gone rogue". That's interesting, because he has a blaster but not an obvious lightsaber. In the context of the Empire, "Inquisitor" has traditionally meant "non-Sith Dark Side Force user who hunts other Force-users." There's nothing to say a Force user can't use a blaster, of course. Ezra is making it work. Admittedly, that's because Ezra (and for that matter Kanan) is kind of bad at fighting and can't reliably just reflect bolts wherever he wants them to go. -Merc Keep Rat |

>>Well, or Jackie Chan. But they'd need a battalion to even start to >>make THAT a fair fight. > >Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan vs the Empire. Someone call Disney. >I believe that may be called "Ip Man." For Donnie Yen, at least. Ebony the Black Dragon Well, it was AN empire.... "Life is like an anole. Sometimes it's green. Sometimes it's brown. But it's always a small Caribbean lizard." |

I >really wanted someone to tell Jyn "The Rebellion is what the >Empire calls us. We're the Alliance to Restore the Republic. >We're an army. Armies run on discipline." Well, judging by Mon Mothma's reaction to Jyn's proclamation right there (not exactly a sigh, but a shake of the head and downward look), I think there may be something along those lines to happen in Jyn's storyline. Also there was that General later on in the teaser stating that they need to follow orders. (As an aside, I just read an excellent piece on Mon Mothma and just the level of determination and integrity represented by the fact that she hasn't changed her outfit for the entire period of the Rebellion...) Also, checking the writer/screenplay credits - Chris Weitz (Cinderella, The Golden Compass, Antz), John Knoll (actually more of a visual effects guy, including Pacific Rim and the past Star Wars movies), Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, the Walking Dead video game). Well, it's an eclectic mix, I'll give them that. Of course, the whole thing is being set as a Heist Film which leads to a ragtag bunch of misfits being pulled together to get the information, so... *shrug* --- Philip

> >>Of course, the whole thing is being set as a Heist Film which >>leads to a ragtag bunch of misfits being pulled together to get the >>information, so... *shrug* > >That could be a very good movie, but it's like... why Rogue One? When >I think "Rogue One" I think starfighters. Based on the name I had >assumed this was a movie about... Rogue Squadron. Well, technically Rogue Squadron was formed after Yavin, not before. Mostly by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles for the snowspeeder groups. (See http://www.starwars.com/news/inside-the-fearless-rogue-group for more.) So at the time this story is set, Rogue Squadron doesn't exist. Some of the people involved in the movie, if they're lucky, may go on to be a part of that squadron, but they'll have to survive Yavin and Hoth first. --- Philip

>I suspect it's Rogue One because this is the origin of the whole Rogue >Squadron concept. Irregulars and misfits coming together to do the >impossible... Seems worth noting that in the EU (which is all retconed now, granted) that's never really been what Rogue Squadron is. Wedge is career military and actually pretty straightlaced. So are Corran Horn and Tycho Celcu. They only recruit the best and almost always from within the regular military. Luke Skywalker is actually a weird exception to the usual profile of a Rogue Squadron member, who usually isn't an irregular misfit and would preform quite well in any other piloting role. Their missions have typically been non-standard, but that's because they're essentially a group of starfighter special forces, the spacegoing equivalent of Page's Commandos. -Merc Keep Rat |
