"Voltron: Legendary Defender"
|
Just gonna cut to the chase on this one: This show is really, REALLY goddamn good. I knew Netflix were aiming to get a new version of everyone's favourite lion robot show out, and I'd even seen that they'd managed to bring on board some of the major players behind The Legend of Korra, but I didn't really know what to expect from that. I sat down tonight to watch the first episode while I had dinner. ...Two hours later, I'm getting up off the couch lest I spend all night there and posting to tell you to watch this show because it is cool as heck. Big old blast of nostalgia right to the face, but the animation, the characters, are new and interesting enough (are they new, actually? I am not an expert on Voltron) to keep things fresh and exciting. It's just so good. I can't even begin to do it justice. Go watch it. You will believe that lions can turn into a robot. |

You're thinking of the writers. I think, but am not sure, it's just the animators who were involved with Korra are involved with the new Voltron. Say what you will about Studio Mir, they delivered us some excellent tickets to Korra's gun show. -Merc Keep Rat |

Well, I am almost done with the seriers, I have 2 - 3 episodes left. I am however and BIG Classic American Voltron Fan (Haven't seen the original Go Lion yet, but it is on my list). There are some MAJOR Differences that I am not happy with, but are not terrible in the light of this is a new show.4 of the 5 Lion Pilots are from the original show as is the princess and Coran. But their personalities were a bit different and Coran was NOT comic Relief nor as annoying as this one. As someone who loves the original, I am not 100% thrilled with the changes. As corny as it was, I miss the the formation speech. I also miss the Crest on the chest of Voltron. I am not sold on the space elves, but they would fit nicely into the UF version. Nor all of the voice acting, but that I admit is probably me getting use to the new voices and not a bad job on the actor's part. I will say it IS better than any of the other attempts at rebooting Voltron. It is good enough that I hope there is a season 2 and that it will bring it closer to the original source material. Other notes: They did bring in more of the subtlety and nuance from Avatar and Korra so there is more going on than just villain of the episode. So far the episodes are all flowing into each other, so you get a sense that things are moving forward. They've given some background on Pidge and Lance that are interesting. As I've said, I haven't finished it yet, I will update or post again if something changes. Overall: If you are looking for a faithful remake, you will not be pleased. If you are looking for a show that embodies the spirit of the original, then this is the show and you will enjoy it. Let's Go Voltron Force! You can see a lot of Korra influence there, and not just in the art design. (For example Coran, who feels a lot like Varrick from LoK.) One of my initial thoughts were, "okay, it's like Voltron raised the baby of Legend of Korra and Tenchi Muyo." Because space elves, and the Castle of Lions itself, really give me a Tenchi vibe. But compared to the original Voltron the several of the characters are a lot fleshed out. Pidge and Lance have had the most work so far. (Hunk is a major math nerd, but that only shows up a couple of times.) I did find it interesting, however, that they didn't form Voltron all that often. Thinking back to the original source material Voltron was formed pretty much every episode (with full transformation scene) and they always finished off with the Blazing Sword. Instead they feel a lot more rebel-like and a lot more desperate. They spend as much time looking for intel as they do fighting evil forces. I do think it makes a worthy reboot of the series, despite being not quite perfect. At least it stands a little bit closer to the source material than either of the other reboots. |

I agree it is MUCH better than the any of the other attempts. I finished the first season and none of my observations change from my original post. OH, and yes, Coran definitely comes accross as Varrick from LoK, my wife even commented on that very fact and had me look up the actor to see if the was the same one! Yeah, the opening theme is extremely....lacking. It's just not good. It doesn't have any presence or memorability. It's more like incidental background music than an opening theme. I wasn't expecting THAT theme to show up but I expected something....INTERESTING. My friend and I are only at episode six or so, but we're digging it so far. My friend remembers nothing but the original opening (with special guest star Optimus Prime), while I remembered much more as well as saw at least one of the crappy sequels. The first 3D one I think. The actual 'sequel' rather than reboot. We can't quite get past Finn the Human as Lance yet though. :D |
