"The Flash (TV)"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-16 AT 02:03 AM (EDT)

I'm unsure whether this counts as 'Source Material', 'Miscellaneous' or what, so I'm just going to put it here and we'll see what happens.

My friend and I recently watched all of what's out for The Flash, and with only a few small gripes, we REALLY LIKE IT. Most of the gripes revolve around Iris. She is....not good. We're not entirely sure if it's her actress, the direction, the writing, or some combination of the three, but whatever it is, Iris is NOT coming off favorably.

Without getting too into spoilers, we were GOBSMACKED at the season 2 finale. And the season one finale for that matter.

We also watched the direct crossover episodes on Arrows side. We were decidedly less enthused about Arrow. Part of that could be not knowing what the hell is going on in that, but not all of it.

Captain Boomerang not having an Australian accent is jut sacrilege, seriously.

Arrow is a little harder to like-- it's darker overall, and not quite as consistent. I think they had a slightly clearer vision for The Flash.

The Supergirl crossover is pretty awesome, though.

Well, Season 1 and 2 of Arrow are pretty good and solid.
The problem is that they can't have a TV Batman, so they have put a lot of the Batman into the Arrow, especially season 3+, which makes it inherently less consistent.

And yes, it is definitely the "Darker / Grittier" of the CW Superhero Shows.
Arrow has also suffered because some of the writers from the early seasons have been moved over to the Flash.

But overall, the CW DCU is, in my opinion, the better version of DC than the Cinematic DCU.

My friend and I have watched the Supergirl pilot and the first part of the Legends of Tomorrow pilot, too.

There were a few 'trying way too hard' lines in Supergirl, and they packed...WAY too much into it. It was far too busy.

The way they went out of their way to NOT name Superman was ridiculous. Guys, Supergirl is LITERALLY RELATED TO SUPERMAN. SAY HIS NAME. It stopped being funny by the fourth time they avoided it.

As for Legends of Tomorrow, casting Rory as the Doctor with the serial numbers filed off was brilliant, but there are some major-ass plot complications that I'm hoping they address in part two of the pilot. It's great to see Gideon again, though~ I was wondering where she went after....THINGS happened in Flash.

LoT is... not great. The actors are all pretty solid, but some of the writing choices are Dubious. Some of the "complications" remain for the whole season before getting resolved (and frankly not all of them even at that point), which was also kind of frustrating. And they had to work entirely too hard to keep the show divorced from the continuity of the others.

From what I've heard, they stopped doing that further along in the season and the rest is much better balanced. I follow somebody on Tumblr that's an avid watcher of the show, who loves it. So I get a play-by-play of cool stuff (and fanart!) from her.

Also, the prohibition for mentioning Superman or Clark has pretty much been bombed out of the water by the fact that he'll be appearing in season 2, possibly regularly. While still keeping the focus on Kara and her close compatriots.

In the sense of "what we want our world to be," at least.

The time travel aspects of the series are so screwy that if I had Don Griffin's portfolio, I would still be tempted to throw up my hands and let the universe dissolve, and that's before the end of Season 2.

I still like the series, but anything that starts by defining the observed universe as a divergent timeline created by a meddling time traveler is going to be problematic.

Yeah, they are riding the time travel pretty hard. I mean, in the comics, Flash kind of had a good amount of time travel in it, but still.

I don't mind it being based on an offshoot timeline made by a temporal meddler; I mean, you have to start somewhere, and that's a pretty good start considering they'd already established Barry as existing in Arrow.

It's better than the start the cinematic DCU has, which is 'Superman is a sociopath who doesn't care unless something happens right in front of him or happens to somebody he likes'.

As a start it was fine, but the continued use of the time-travel reset button has pretty much ruined the show for me. The final straw was Oneel tbvat onpx n frpbaq gvzr naq npghnyyl fnivat uvf zbgure. Events don't really have weight when you know that, if it gets bad enough, Barry will just stop it from ever having happened.

I'm going to assume that's some sort of cipher - ROT-13? - rather than you having a stroke. PM me what th heck you said, mayhaps? I'm on mobile and selecting an area is....either problematic or impossible, I'm not sure which.

Yes it's Rot-13. It's about what he did after beating Zoom and why I'm probably not going to watch the next season.

And reading a synopsis of it makes me less likely to even watch Season 3.

My wife and I have enjoyed The Flash quite a bit. Enough so that I'm peevish over the fact that they aren't using this Flash in the cinematic movies. I like this Barry, damn it.

Supergirl got better towards the end of the season. The fact that the series is jumping from CBS to CW should actually help it along in Season 2. I just got the feeling from the writing that CBS was simply scared at trying to produce a superhero series.
