"More info on Star Trek Discovery"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-16 AT 04:13 PM (EDT)

Ran across this item on the BBC News website just now, while on a general trawl.

My takeaways:

- I think making the focus character someone other than the captain (one presumes, from the rank specified, one of the bridge officers) is an interesting idea, particularly as we've already had about 152 million episodes of that. However, I find myself wondering if they can actually make themselves do it and not drift gradually back to always looking at the center seat.

- Setting the show ca. 10 years before TOS-slash-Trek 2009* is a clever idea, as it means they can (at least in the short term) duck the entire question of Which Universe Is It? (I say "at least in the short term" because the point of divergence between them was before that—but it's not likely to be an issue in any operative way right then. Hell, it's not likely to be an issue in any really significant way ever, but, Star Trek fandom. :)

- "And there will be robots." is just a hilariously offhanded sentence, particularly in context. Bravo, article writer.

- "The first season will consist of 13 episodes rather than the traditional 20-24 episodes to keep storytelling tight." Or, as we used to say, because that's all they could get the money to make. The fact that the exec producer even felt the need to drop that little bit of transparent waffle in there makes me wonder somewhat about everything else he said, but it it what it is.

- "not subject to broadcast standards and practices" = decontamination gel without inexplicably leaving their underwear on. You know it. I know it.

- It begins production in two months and they're still looking at a January debut? They must not be expecting post to take very long, which is... interesting.

I'm still not hyped, but I'm not un-hyped either.

* Yes, I know those two things are not actually set at the same time as each other, but the article does not specify to which it refers. Come to think of it, that might be a coy way of saying it's set at the same time as Trek 2009, which is also set around 10 years before TOS, because of the way they telescoped Kirk's career.

Well that may explains why the fanfilms guidelines were changed to kill Axanar, which would also be in the pre-Kirk era, albeit a decade before this...

Still, moving away from the centre seat could at least make more sense with the Captain and entire command crew not going on every away mission.

Perhaps they are going to have her be something like security or tactical. Someone who's job is, in part, to go on away missions so that you don't have the constant question of "why is the bridge crew doing this?"
