"Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species"
|
Such is the title of Elon Musk's talk to the International Astronautical Congress, which is about about how SpaceX is approaching the creation of its Interplanetary Launch System. The video of the talk is available here: http://www.spacex.com/marsAt first I thought, am I really going to watch over an hour of this? Yes, I did. It's a great overview about what the technological challenges of building a spacecraft to go to Mars looks like in terms of engineering, economics, chemistry, and a bit of planetary dynamics. You know, like a documentary but for people who already know what delta-v is. But it also made me feel excited for the future, which is a pretty good feeling. Even the short-term goals - 1.5 tons of cargo to Mars every 2 years, starting in 2020, are amazing. |

>>This guy is some kind of long-scheme supervillain. We're eventually >>going to have to stop him, except by the time we try he'll control all >>of our robot cars, which will leave it up to the National Hot Rod >>Association to save the day. > >I miss M.A.S.K too, Ben. It's okay to admit it. I'm not really seeing the similarity between the NHRA and Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, but OK... (Or the similarity between Elon Musk and Miles Mayhem, come to that. He seems more like that much more competent guy who ran Cobra after Cobra Commander. --G. -><- Benjamin D. "I have to ask you the same question people back home are asking about space these days. Is it worth it? Should we just pull back? Forget the whole thing as a bad idea, and take care of our own problems, at home." "No. We have to stay here. And there's a simple reason why. Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics, and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes, and - all of this - all of this - was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars." -- Babylon 5, "Infection" (1994) |
