"Ninety-Eight Years and Counting"

Lost in all the kerfuffle, I’d like to note something:

It’s November 11th. Veterans Day, or as the rest of the world largely knows it, Armistice Day.

The generations that fought... no, that survived World War I were overshadowed hugely by World War II. After being bled white in the War to End Wars, they had the best and most productive years of their life stolen by the Great Depression, suffered through another hugely destructive global conflict, and quietly but busily helped rebuild, maintain, and bequeath to us the century that their children and especially their grandchildren would loudly declare belonged to them and them alone.

They’re all gone now. They passed into history during the seventies, eighties, and nineties with barely a whisper. During the five-year jack-off over WWII’s semicentennial that happened from ’89 to ’95, nobody seemed to notice the last doughboys standing in the back of the room.

This very year was the centennial of both the Somme and Verdun, and few seem care. We had EMAILZ to talk about.

You ever get tired of always having an instant, appropriate, and educational response to everything, Ben?

Seems like you might get tired of that.

I'm almost sure I've mentioned The Great War around here before; I've been following it for a year or so by this point.

(Further note: Today is also known as Remembrance Day in many Commonwealth countries.)

   Amen.

To everyone who's lost a loved one in war, to everyone who's been impacted by the greatest sacrifice anyone can give for their country: We have not forgotten you.

I have not personally suffered a loss in that way--the closest I come to the military is being a civilian DOD contractor--but those who have suffered and died for my sake are still in my thoughts tonight.

To every vet reading this: Thank you for your service.
