"A Cultural Musing"

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-14 AT 07:40 PM (EDT)

It occurs to me that Avalon 17's famous virtual newscaster, Rei Tracy, is basically a Vocaloid who got a Real Job after the idol singer thing played out.

(Also, more or less on the same topic, it amuses me that the "Virtual Companion" software Corwin was playing around with back in early S4 can, in retrospect, be seen as an evolutionary outgrowth of products like Vocaloid, although the prototype VCXL kit Corwin has can't actually sing. Perhaps the people who made it hadn't licensed that part yet when they made that release candidate. XL thinks she can sing, which implies that the programmers did include the behavior hooks for a singing subsystem. It's just... not there. :)

So Sharon Apple is what you get when you set the "Loyalty" slider to 0?

I think Sharon might've been the result of an illegal (possibly accidental) use of Daystrom multitronic technology in the design of a Miku Hatsune emulator, but that is also a possibility, yes.

(Mind you, you want to be careful about setting that slider too high, too. We were just talking about the yandere archetype the other day...)

I'm sure the vast majority of sliders get... counterproductive, when pushed to extremes. I'm sure the production version of the software will have limiters on them.

Likely, though they're almost certainly of the "warn, then let you do it anyway" type, the programmers being the types they are.

Are there any legal uses of multitronic tech?

No, the ones you really have to worry about are when you set the loyalty to max and then bottom out the morality slider. You end up with HK-47.

No, I suppose that was a bit redundant. Along the same lines as "unlawful flight to avoid prosecution".

That's basically the same failure mode as setting the Contempt Level on your ScudCo disposable assassin too high.

There might have been carefully planned prototypes to see if they can create anything that doesn't have the problems that the Daystrom design had, but if there have been, nothing's worked out so far.

Of course, given the restrictions that would have to be placed on such a design (no outside access, no ability to control anything more dangerous than a toaster oven, and so forth), it's possible that the results of such tests are doomed to insanity regardless.

Well, Toaster is technically just a toaster, even if Doc Mobius decided that stuffing him full of multitronic circuits would be an interesting experiment. Thankfully, the worst he can do is burn your bagels if particularly enraged.

Azula thinks he's good for the occasional laugh, but Ty Lee still keeps her distance.
