"Finally acquired a mentioned game"
|
From Knights2.txt: "The train's not 'til 6, and it's... " (he glanced at his watch) "... 4 now," he said, sitting down next to Hikaru. "Want to try one of these games out? The chess set was the only thing I recognized, but the guy at the store said the other things have the rules inside them." "Sure!" Hikaru said, plopping down opposite him at the table and emptying out one of the games, which appeared to consist mainly of a box of translucent plastic pyramids. She looked at the colored pyramids curiously and began sorting them, by size and color, into neat rows along the edge of the table. "What comes first?" It was a strategy game involving a deck of cards that reminded Corwin strongly of a Tarot deck and a set of colored pyramids as marker pieces. "Can you play any -other- games with these pieces, Corwin?" "Sure, there's a whole book of them," he said, tossing it to her. "But I'm for dinner too." I've had the paper versions of the pyramids for a while, but I finally got my hands on the true plastic versions this past week:
When I originally encountered the book, my first thought was, 'Oh, no, they didn't,' and when I read through the book, I realized that, yes, it was the same set of pieces mentioned in the story quoted above. Contained in the book are twelve games, including a game called Gnostica, which itself is a successor to Zarcana, which are both played on a field made of tarot cards. The bottom four 'stashes' of pyramids, I believe, are the colors that our heroes played with, since LooneyLabs made a set called the Martian Chess Set at one point. They are also considered the 'traditional' colors by enthusiasts. The clear and black were originally colors of the 'Black Ice' expansion set to the same. Since I had to buy the colors in tubes, by the color, I had to improvise a box for myself:

When we wrote that chunk, we only had the four-color set (which used to come in a plastic box) and the rules for Zarcana, not Gnostica. But since I really like the games you can play with Icehouse pieces, I wanted to throw those in. Especially as, unlike chess, more than one person can play, and they're nicely portable for things like trains. (I'm especially fond of Zendo, if anybody cares. :)
