"the Apothesis experience"

LAST EDITED ON 05-17-03 AT 04:52 AM (EDT)

I will make a confession: I was arsing around the NXE page for the better part of an hour before I found the links to the file. Color me stupid. Other obstacles pushing up were a 404 when I opened to file for the first time, my .txt download corrupting (Natla's fault) and Word crashing on me. Plus the five hours or so I spent sleeping when I realised I'd not registered any part of the last page and it deserved more attention

Viscount Crofthenge

I thought he was an Earl. IIRC, Viscount is a distinct and somewhat less prestigious title. Probably more in the line with DJ saying he'd been awarded a minor peerage. Gets remedied later on I see but I'm {wail}confused{/wail}

It headed straight for the back wall of the factory building -
- jinked left, headed straight for a smokestack -
- jinked right, looped around it, passed straight through the narrow gap between two vertical stanchions holding up a catwalk between two buildings -
- streaked down along the rain gutter on the main production building for a hundred yards -
- jumped up twenty feet to clear an air conditioning unit -
- wheeled in a complex polygonal arc made up of 10 separate straight lines around a second water tower -
- and plunged straight into the -back- of the Evangelion

That's a nice shot.

"What in God's name did the Russians expect to use it on?" asked Aoba.
"Angels, presumably," said Truss.
...
"I think a 25-megaton H-bomb would do the job, AT Field or not."
"But my God, the collateral damage!" said Hyuuga.
"The Soviets are a bit more philosophical about that kind of
thing than our operations planners," Truss said.
...
"Given all the other horribly dangerous stuff we have around here, who cares about one piddling little H-bomb?"

This whole sentence inspired much breakage on my part.

Somebody, a slender girl-shape barely recognizable as such in the twilight of his monitor, was sitting back on his knees, her own knees astride his hips, smiling at him.
"Hi, Shinji," she said softly.
Shinji's response was direct, to the point, and perfectly summed up his feelings about the situation.
"GYAAAAAAAH!!"

Now really Shinji. Is that anyway to greet someone who's come so far to meet you?

"If I have to tell you my last name, Shinji, I'm going to go back outside and shoot myself, it'll be that disappointing."

Right then I think Shinji would have been hard-put to tell anyone his OWN last name

"Sneaking girls into your room, eh?" said Otis with what was,
for him, a knowing nod. "Naughty, Mr. Ikari. What'd your father
think?"
What would my father think? Shinji wondered.

At this point? Probably congratulate him on taking the initiative, be sorry that he never discussed the topic and remedy that lapse.

edit: oh, I was right. well that's a first

"Aw, that's OK," said Otis. "I was just gonna give Ikari a hard time about sneakin' you in and then run you along home."

And Otis sinks to a new depth of stupidity. Why do I get the feeling he's assigned to NERV mostly so his Absolute Stupidity Field can be researched.

He wasn't prepared for a Valkyrie to drop out of the sky into his team's midst, screaming in German, or for Death to follow her down on silent black wings.

No one expects the Valkyrie Inquisition. Their main weapons are fear, surprise and women with really BIG weapons.

“What you just told me was from a movie.”
“Yes!” said the Malakite brightly.

I don't get it. Not that this is in anyway unusual. Or a bad thing.

It’s not good for the soul. And in this case, it’s my soul that stands to get messed up.”

I can see how that could be taken personally.

Who else would consider knocking over a bookcase a thorough search?

Bar-bar-ians. Someone needs to teach those Ellison kids some respect for the written word.

“Um... and what information would that be, Professor?” inquired a voice very like Jon’s as its owner accompanied Ikari into their side hallway.
There came the sound of a heavy punch, and then a young man almost identical in appearance to Jon sprawled full-length on the floor at the youngsters’ feet.
“I still hate her guts,” Gendou informed him cheerfully as he bent down, took his nametag, and handed it to Jon.

First Truss and now Gendou... what are NERV feeding their TechDiv personnel these days? Weetabix?

“The thing I love most about your family,” Marina Kirishatova mused quietly to Jon, “is that you are all so modest.”

Well, that will teach me to eat breakfast while I read anything by Eyrie.

No doubt Dr. Akagi will give me a piece of her mind. A few more and I’ll have collected the whole thing

I actually like this guy.

“you’re definitely not evil, or I’d have to smite you.”

Just from about the point Rachel turned up I had this notion of her breaking Jon out of his funk by putting a sword to his throat and telling him about the Malakim never suffering evil to live. Then lowering the sword and telling him he's free to go.

“Well, all right, let me put it to you this way, Mr. Bacon. What would you do if I told you that I have successfully completed the most treacherous and dangerous phase of Rampancy, and am well on my way to becoming the world’s first fully autonomous electronic sentience?”
Derek blinked. “Ah... well, if you came right out and told me that... then I’d have to report it to Dr. Anderson... and she would have to report it to Captain Trussell... and I imagine Dr. Akagi would hear about it and have you shut down and dismantled.”

"What's wrong with Durandal?"
"Oh, nothing important."
"Can I have some details, just for my own peace of mind?"
"Knowing the detail will do NOTHING for your peace of mind."
"Out with it."
"He's a little bit rampant" (how is it that first time through I spelt rampant with 2 q's? feh)
"How can he be a 'little' bit rampant?"
"It's like being very rampant, but not quite so much."

“Ken, for the past three months, you’ve done nothing but sit in the Ops Center, eat chips, and kick my ass at robot battle games.”

Ohhhhhhh, yeah! He gets to put his money where his mouth is. This is great. (Dan's pretty good too but not as quotable).

“Dude!” San whispered to Shinji. “God said I don’t displease Him!”
“I heard!” Shinji replied. “That’s great!”
“That’s TERRIBLE!” San hissed plaintively. “I’ll have to sin harder. You’ll help me, right? We could start with some impure thoughts or something and work our way up.”

This is not an offer anyone in their right mind would turn down, right?

okay, that's it. It's not exactly c&c but at least it's not just 'yay'. Don't anyone feel that you have to reply.

Maybe if they were Bob's age... She's still, what, fifteen, fourteen? (leaving aside quibbly cloning details)

-I- wouldn't, but then, I've only got four, five years on her. (which it occurs to me is -still- statutory rape, but I don't want to think about that any more) That's different from being well past twice her age...

Oh, yeah. Being -taken- already would make saying no a good idea too.

Blessed be.

You know, I can't see any way of responding to this that would leave me with even a shred of dignity.

Well that is ...kind of the point I think? Dignity is
overrated anyway :)

I had my own snarfage on this one.

I'm in a super-hero roleplaying game. My character is a powered-armor type going under the name 'Valkyrie'. Due to an aspect of her unique origin (daughter of Donblas, Lord of Order), she also has a language talent. One of her teammates is an *Angel*, complete with black wings.

Let's just say that it initially brought up a very different image.

Rachael is quoting Obi-Wan Kenobi from the first Star Wars movie (or #4 depending on how you look at it) when Luke tells him that he could almost see the remote even though he had his eyes covered.

You're right; it's one step down.

If you will refer to the website archive copy of Exodus 1:9, you will note that the King made DJ Viscount Crofthenge in that episode, and it has ever been so.

big... editorial... wink.

My reasons for invoking the power of the Stalinizer on that particular point are complex, but it all boils down to "I screwed up the first time around and decided, well, for the movie, I guess I'd better fix that. Grumble."

>That's a nice shot.

Yeah, old-time X-COM (in Europe, UFO) players will note that Stanfield set an illegal number of waypoints - but then, he's Stanfield. :)

What Rachael just said to Asuka was, "You've taken your first step into a larger world."

C'mon, people!

So he set more than ten points, whoopie, (TechDiv must of improved on that somewhat at some point during the past fifteen or so years) for a small impact zone on a moving target to boot. Still it's a cool use of my favourate X-Com weapon and a 10-limit wouldn't've been as stylish.

Ah, TechDiv has had plenty of time to improve the design. Besides, Blaster Launchers require large amounts of style at all times :)
