...or whatever it's called. Gosh that's a long name. :)

*shuffles notecards* I had a few things I wanted to say, in no particular order, just a quick bulleted list perhaps. I'll probably use numbers, since they look better than a dash.

1. See. This is how comics should be written, and as much as I enjoyed reading Don Griffin's story it irritates me that comics can't be this much fun. I think Marvel may be getting it -- what with having six or seven official X-Men timelines: movie, cartoon, Evolution, etc. -- but Gryphon gets it. The X-Men aren't about canon or twenty year old backstories. They're about a bald guy in a wheelchair who gets people to work together to fight for a common good. Gryphon really, really hit that nail on the head with his, and it's a great story for it.

2. I'm glad Jubilee showed up. It's just not the X-Men without her.

3. Canada wants a TARDIS, eh? Well, come on, who doesn't. But that may be the coolest line I've ever read in regards to a TARDIS.

4. Doom was written quite well. Especially the part about him not being a formal engineer. That was a nice twist on the Doom character that, I have to admit, I would have never thought to use. Doom would not see the situation as an engineer, a technologist, or a sorcerer would see it; he would see it as Doom would see it. Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

5. I'm glad Beast made it along. Providing they get assimilated into the UF-verse, which is Gryphon's call, Beast would fit in well, I believe, with the IPO crew. Although, Lensman McCoy just sounds wrong, given the overtones of the "McCoy" association. *points to .sig as a means of jarring memories* Still... :)

6. I'm not sure if I've said this on the HL board or not, but I'm glad to see that someone besides me (and Victor von Doom, I suppose) doesn't find Reed Richards all that important when dealing with technological crisis. A good jab -- that whole thing about the one time Don could have used Reed -- at Richards is always welcomed sight. Thank you, Gryphon.

7. Talking to no one in particular: Ironman really is the only readable Marvel comic these days, a fact I attribute to its disproportionate inclusion of holographic girls. TGIF!

8. Gryphon has the almost singular ability (I think one or two other writers) to write stories that FEEL like the stories I made up during Christmas breaks when playing with my assorted X-Men, Batman, Ninja Turtle, etc. action figures. Thank you.

Well. I've finally gotten around to reading the story, and as others have said, it's a really good story Gryph. Now on to the more specific comments.

"what would a person have to spend in a month to follow all of the X-Men related titles now? $20?"

It's not that bad, they've ended several series. At it's height the X-books consisted of I think 8 or 9 monthly series and generally 2 or 3 mini-series at any given time. Nowadays it's down to 5 monthly series (6 if you count Weapon X, a series staring the badguys), and 2 monthly series covering alternate universe X-Men, the Evolution universe and Marvel's Ultimate universe.

hmm, maybe it hasn't been cut back as much as I thought.

"In those days I was heavily influenced by Victor Applegate II's "Tom Swift, Jr." books, "

I remember those, I've got 3 of them still kicking around somewhere.

As a longtime Doctor Who fan myself, I enjoyed the various little references you had spread through out the story.

""Looks like seven humans, a Daemon... maybe a Roklar... and I
dunno what the blue guy is."

By Roklar I'm guessing he's refering to Mr Grimm, and which of the 2 blue guys was he refering to? Hank or Kurt?.

Logan, Kitty and Kurt could all make for good duelist (Logan's quite skilled with a katana as I recall, Kitty's ninja trained, and kurt's demonstrated the ability to weild 3 swords simultaneously with skill (both hands and the third with his tail for those who're wondering). Plus in current comics continuity, Kitty's attending University in Boston (I think) working on some sort of advanced science/technology degree, so she'd fit in well on Tamodachi.

Don, Stark and Doom will have a feild day exploring all the new scientific advances available for them to play with.

But essentially, they are all survivors, so I'm sure they'll find some way of getting by. And it's not like it's the first time any of them have dealt with time/dimensional travel.

Oh, and my guess as to what 'DC' stands for; 'Dimensional Counterpart'.

Norgarth

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!

Hank. He took Kurt for a Daemon (native to the planet Daemos).

He is, but on the other hand, he doesn't really have the mindset to make a good Duelist. He has this unfortunate fondness for making his opponent dead, which doesn't work out so well in a friendly Rose Duel. Or even an unfriendly one.

Which, as was pointed out to me during the EPDTMU development process, means that she and Kaitlyn have to be kept separate - ninja and samurai are natural enemies in the wild. :)

Teleporting is so cheaty, though. :)

Kurt and Kait would certainly be an interesting Rose Duel...

Not really. Unless he was just bouncing around at random, constantly, he wouldn't know where to hit. She'd just have to wait for him to get tired, sneak up and /slice/...there goes a rose.

I seem to remember it being revealed in the mid-50's range of Excaliburthat Kurt had a natural shadowmeld ability that makes him almost invisible in deep shadow...and he also survived thru thirty of forty issues where his ability to teleport was limited to one per day and it left him exhausted and weak. He's a natural acrobat and has been playing around with swords longer than Kait's been alive, and with three swords would be able to defend quite a large portion of his personal space. Fuzzy-elf has also had quite a few more people out to kill him so he's had lots of practice fighting, too.

Besides, the point of a Rose Duel is in the challenge, not the 'I'll turn invisible and bust his rose' sort of instant win...that would alienate people and no one would LEARN anything which is the whole point of the Rose Duels. Kait kicking Utena's butt was for ulterior motives, and other than that, and her trial, she usually didn't use the invisibility trick, did she? Kait would probably win against Kurt anyway but it would be interesting and would cover a lot of ground (and walls and ceiling). An entertaining fight would be Kurt and Sky or Kurt and Liza with lots of flourishes and much Errol-Flynnery abounding, and probably in the case of Liza and Kurt much shameless flirting, as they both do that very well indeed.

two good points... One that, in fact, the duel between Utena and Kate on the rooftop was also a special case. It was kinda a case of 'you know, we've been sparing for ages, but we've never really gone all out' combined with a bit of friendly rivalry (ala Kate and Juri's 'I yeild to your Kung-fu bit back at the bowling alley)

As to the second... It is well known that Kurt did grow up in and around a circus (at least in the backstory that I remember for him) so I find it totaly believable that he was capable of accuratly wielding a sword in each hand. (Dunno what the style is called when their both the same length, but one short and one long is called Florentine style) The one in the tail, I'd expect was more for area denial rather than serious attack. Still, I hope the SoS muse prompts Gryph to include a duel between Kurt and Liza sometime in the future... I agree that it would be a killer scene, and a lot of fun to read!

Says you. To me, and to all the folks I know, "y'all" is plural and a contraction of "you all." It's like "youse." Second person plural pronoun. I could (and was going to before I realized the triviality of it) dig up a bunch of sources to back this up, but since it's just a nit, I'll just let it lie.

On another note... I thought it was very cool that Poitr and Kurt were actually watching "Dr. Who." I remember on one of the episodes with Sylvester McCoy and "Ace" (I hope I've got that pairing right), I think it was "Destiny of the Daleks," Ace is in a flat watching TV and "Dr. Who" was coming on just as she left. It was like, "And now we return to the BBC classic Docto--" and she turned the television off. A nice touch, and double funny since it adds a whole other layer to the meta-text of the story.

Have I said how cool Gryphon is?

Yep, that was Remembrance of the Daleks, the last Daleks episode. The reference itself barely misses being circular, too, and I'm a little stunned that the writers either missed it or passed it up. I remember doping out from dates mentioned in the novelization that the episode Ace missed watching was the very first one, An Unearthly Child, which aired November 23, 1963. If they'd set the story just a month later, she'd have switched off the opening of the first episode of the second story - The Daleks.

On the other hand, the first scene in Remembrance with an actual Dalek in it takes place in the junkyard at No. 76 Totters Lane, Shoreditch, which was where the TARDIS was parked in An Unearthly Child when the two schoolteachers followed the Doctor's granddaughter to it and started the whole series off in the first place. (At one point the Doctor tells someone about some feature of the yard, and when asked how he knows that, he replies peevishly, "I've been here before.") So I guess that's just as circular; only the symmetry in the Dalek connection would have amused me more.

>keep forgetting it's not abbreviated) goes?

It's a typical pilot, and a typical BBC programme from the early 1960s - which is to say it has terrible pacing and the sound quality ranges from bad to abysmal. The early shows bear relatively little resemblance to what the show had become by the time it became famous - it was originally developed as a children's show, and it shows in the production design and the writing.

That said, they're interesting as examples of the way the show evolved. I recommend seeing if you can track down one of the early Dalek episodes, like The Daleks, The Chase or The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and then comparing it to a later one, like Revelation of the Daleks (if you can stand the Sixth Doctor) or Remembrance.

My interest in the First Doctor era is mainly historical - I don't really like that version of the show much. I don't really start to like it on its own merits until Tomb of the Cybermen (and if a fan really wants to suck up, I hear a fully restored version of Tomb is out on DVD now, and my address is on my online résumé :), which is a Second Doctor episode.
