"Alita: Battle Angel"

Has anyone else seen it yet? I caught it opening weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's been panned by critics a bit, but the fan reviews have been rating it significantly higher (59 rating by critics, but 94 by audience on rottentomatoes.com). I haven't read the source material, so I can't say how the details compare, but the original creator, Yukito Kishiro, apparently thinks it's the greatest movie he's ever seen. https://comicbook.com/anime/2019/02/18/alita-battle-angel-adaptation-greatest-movie-in-the-world-yukito-kishiro-comments/

I saw it in Dolby Vision (HDR video, enhanced, seat rattling surround sound) because my friends chose the screening we went to, otherwise I probably would have just done the basic ticket, but this might be one of the few movies I go back and watch in 3D, just because the visuals were that amazing.

I enjoyed it, as did all my friends who've seen it so far. I come at it from a strange place; I read all of Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, but not the original series, because that's what I had in terms of reading material. I had a friend who knew both the original series and the OVA to explain some of the differences afterwards, though.

I'm honestly just glad they didn't get Scarlet Johansson to play Alita.

I managed never to have heard about it until I noticed it on the marquee at the movie theater near UMaine the other day. The last I'd heard, a hundred years ago, the idea of doing a live-action Gunnm film was in the eighth circle of development hell and unlikely ever to get out.

I saw it Saturday and Alita: Battle Angel is one of the rare times I think the movie might be as good as the manga, She was just so earnest and Ido was great. It is the best adaptation I've ever seen and frankly in my the top 5 films of the last 5 years

While I wouldn't go quite this far, it's *pretty dang good*. There's a bunch of stuff I could pick out from my ancient read of the original manga, and even older watch of the OAV, yet unlike Ghost in the Shell, it actually wrote them in well, rather than just dropped in the scenes unchanged despite it not making contextual sense.
