"(S34) S3M2 Per Ardua"

26 Not the Imperial Opera House? Strange...

115 Force sensitivity doesn't show up on standard psi screenings because it doesn't affect the physiological responses those screenings gauge.

197 Jei, the discipline practiced by the Jyuraian royal family, is a distant cousin to the Jedi arts, having descended from the ways of Jedi among the original colonists over the millennia of the planet's isolation.

225 He'd have had a much wider range of destinations to choose from if he'd gone to New Avalon International, the city's main passenger port, rather than Mathews, which is a smaller port with more private spacecraft and charters than scheduled commercial service - but then he wouldn't have met Master Gajic. The Force guides its chosen in subtle ways.

260 Chronologically, I believe this is the first appearance of Senator Palpatine, who has here acquired the given name he's never afforded on screen.

545 Imra comes to us from Legion of Super-Heroes. As with most of UF's versions of Legionnaires, her particular design is taken from the 1990s incarnation of the series (as seen in the trade paperback compilation Legion of Super-Heroes: The Beginning of Tomorrow).

652 Despite its name (applied by Japanese surveyors), Niogi, a first-wave Earth colony, was settled mostly by Germans.

744 Obviously, UF doesn't use the Star Trek: The Next Generation warp speed scale, wherein velocity asymptotically approaches an unattainable maximum of Warp 10 (infinite speed).

748 Zanzigraal, a farming colony on the far reaches of the Outer Rim Territories, is one of the canonical "very far from anyplace" names in the 25th century, sort of the galactic equivalent of Timbuktu.

824 Wakaba's top is merchandise for a New Avalon-based punk band called "BANG".

843 "Blue Lensman" is the unofficial in-house nickname for a Lensman assigned to the Tactical Division, also known as the Bluesuiters because of the distinctive blue jumpsuits they wear.

952 Just like C-3PO.

982 Another little scene I'm still very fond of today; it shows off Wakaba, Saionji, and Liza nicely, and gives Imra the welcome aboard she rather missed out on because of the emergency. I like action as much as the next guy, but there are times when it's nice to just have a few people sitting around.

1069 The Amar (pronounced with a long A, "AY-mar") is the Klingon cruiser leading the battlegroup that is wiped out by V'ger at the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

1150 Thus, it's reasonable to assume that Sub-Commander Kraal is the Klingon officer played in that scene by Mark Lenard.

1276 Sto-Vo-Kor is the Klingon afterlife, where honored warriors go to join the Black Fleet and await the call to battle that heralds the end of time. In UF, it's the Klingon name for Valhalla.

1306 The markings on Valiant's prow are based on the famous shark's mouth and eyes painted on the radiator cowlings of the P-40 fighters belonging to the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers. Valiant's ship's crest bears the AVG's winged-tiger insignia as well.

1355 Jefferies tubes are named for Star Trek production designer Matt Jefferies, and are so called in Star Trek itself.

1395 Actually, as we will see in Gunboat Diplomacy, Smitty cannot correctly be called "one of the men"; that's Zed's nickname for T'Barr, the Vulcan woman on his engineering team.

1574 Well, that answers that question from the DSM Halloween party.

1597 This is not a spell like the one Anthy used in Tower Shrouded in Frost, but rather Corwin exerting the control over machinery that his portfolio as an Ęs grants him.

1619 Pretty confident. Gunnr Brynjelfr taught him to handle a pistol. Besides, he didn't miss Akio back in Endgame, Akio dodged. Mostly. Klayvor ain't half-svartelf.

1676 For some reason, this is one of my favorite moments ever set aboard the Valiant.

1686 An effect that could be simulated with our old friend the dolly zoom!

1698 Anthy reserves the Death of Dreams for people who have displeased her very much. What Klayvor intended to do to B'Elanna certainly qualified him.

2063 Now here I go again, everything is alien
How does it feel to be outstripped by the pace of cultural change?
My deeds are senseless and rendered meaningless
When measured in that vein
I could go supersonic, the problem's chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it?
When I need to sate I just accelerate into oblivion

2117 A Klingon proverb we will see many a time again.

2169 Rura Penthe is the infamous Klingon gulag planet, as seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Among other things, it houses the Empire's chief dilithium mines, which are worked by those convicted of crimes against the Klingon state.

2186 Also known as a barrel roll.

2200 The Valiant's TDC shares a name with, but is no doubt vastly more sophisticated than, the analog calculating device used by the crews of World War II submarines to work out course and running time for torpedo attack.

2206 The verteron is a Star Trek nonsense hadron, similar to the venerable graviton, which is used to account for all manner of Weird Time-Space Phenomena.

2231 Like Russians, Klingons commonly refer to starships as male.

2301 Shivoam'alaa: Very loosely, "Cripes". (Note the invocation of Shivoam, spirit of the Serpent River.)

2339 Janice shouldn't take it that personally; even an armored Ragolian Ranger is no match for a MJOLNIR Mk IX full-replacement combat cyborg.

2377 The same message displayed to Captain Styles when Montgomery Scott disabled USS Excelsior's transwarp drive in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Also the first line of the theme song to Captain Kangaroo.

2384 Well, would you be able to resist quoting Battlecruiser Vengeance in Utena's place?

2567 The Stanley Cup is the trophy awarded each year to the winning team of the National Hockey League championship series. Well, actually, the trophy awarded to the winner of the NHL championship these days is a copy; the original's in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. In UF, during one of the undocumented (er, no pun intended) World Wars on Earth, it looked briefly like Toronto would be in the line of fire. The Cup was removed from the museum and taken to a secure location for safekeeping. Unfortunately, after the war, no one had survived who knew where it was. People have been looking for it ever since, and as the centuries passed, it's taken on a quasi-religious significance to some, including Master Gajic.

2572 Aldous Gajic, portrayed by the immortal David Warner on the Babylon 5 episode "Grail", is canonically a wandering ascetic in search of the Holy Grail. His demeanor throughout the episode is so very Jedi-like that making the UF version a Jedi Master was automatic.

2587 "A beginning is a very delicate time" rears its head again.

2655 I should have expected this closing line to cause the consternation it did, but I honestly didn't think of it. All I meant was that there was going to be a lot of paperwork and fooling around with review boards when they got to port, but a lot of people assumed it was foreshadowing for some other manner of hell breaking loose when the Valiant returned to New Avalon.

   >Death of Dreams

I had been wondering what that trick was called. Highly appropriate. Probably very wise Mia didn't examine it too closely.
