"Hello"

Hiya. My name is MOGSY, I've been an Eyrie reader and lurker on this website since that era when the first proto-South Park, sent via email, was enough to crash entire university networks, we still thought Nirvana was cool, and Internet fanfiction was relatively young and exciting - yes, I am talking about (wait for it, wait for it) - the MID-NINETIES!!!! 1995 to be exact, when I started classes at a small Colorado Springs school for wayward boys and girls, hoping to fly planes in Gryphon's favorite branch of the service, the USAF. I didn't end up flying planes, but I did graduate and go on to spend over 7 years in the active duty Air Force and recently transferred to the Dark Side of the Total Force, aka the Air National Guard.

I finally decided to break my silence because
1) I never realized just how many military people and vets were into Eyrie (trust me, at school it was a very tiny group, single digits as far as I knew) - cool I say.
2) My renewed interest in Eyrie grew as the influence of non-anime source material appeared to grow - right around NXE was in full-swing. - I'd been an "anime" fan since Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets, and the older I got, the more anime fandumb alienated the heck out of me
3) The quality of the writing went through the roof (and that's my fanboy offering right there - nice work the last several years people, even if I don't always agree philosophically, the writing is just plain kickass!) and 4) I started liking Gryphon and co's versions of Marvel Comics and Star Wars better than "the real thing"

It's good to be here, I've developed quite a few things about Eyrie stories that I've wanted to discuss over the years...

Who said the Air Force was my favorite branch of the service?

I mean, sure, I have a great regard for aviation, aeronautical history, and so forth, and I certainly don't have bad things to say about the USAF...

... but I'm afraid my first loyalty must be to the Army, my grandfather's alma mater, as it were.

Regardless, welcome. We don't discriminate against any branch of the service here. I've got an uncle who's a Navy vet, two cousins in the Marine Corps and an old friend from high school in the Air Force. Even the Coast Guard is welcome! (Kidding! Those guys are hardcore.)

It is kind of startling how many military fans we have, or at least how many we hear from relative to the rest of the population. But hey, anything that helps our servicepeople get through the long shifts, I'm happy to help. :)

Oh believe me man, you've helped :) One of our - that is, the tiny group of UF fans I survived the Zoo with - favorite geek discussions was "would it actually work?" in reference to the WDF's culture, organization, leadership style, etc

And I want to amend my intro from above - I did get to fly planes for a little bit, the amazing T-37B known to all as the "Tweet" . My hearing has never quite recovered. Not really all that fun in Mississippi in the summertime. Between the Tweet, gliders, and a few other rides in some airplanes big and small, I still enjoy good ol' pilot (fighter, bomber, whatever) stories now and then. They make me feel less horrible after bad powerpoint ranger days.

All true fighter pilot stories begin of course with the magic phrase "so there I was" and contain no less than 10% truth (at least according to Nellis O-Club rules).

Ah, the Air Force. I would have joined up if they were not so anal about the height requirement for combat pilots. So I went for the Navy instead and am currently awaiting my ship-date.
