"Possible Wire Infestation of Portland, OR"

Since the local Mazda dealership is absolutely useless, I placed a call to Ron Tonkin auto in Portland. In the ~3 hrs between my initial call, they've already discussed the procedure of purchasing a car with my bank financing me, quoted me (the wrong car, admittedly), and acknowledged their mistake, all via my preferred medium of email.

This compares quite favorably to the eight days with no response to my inquiries to Continental Mazda, the only folks up here with that dealership.

So, I may be hustling my bustle onto an aeroplane, traveling with intent to purchase. My current game plan is to fly into Portland on Friday, overnight in the area, and mosey towards Alaska Saturday morning, anyone in the area care to attend a meal?

I've always wanted to do that—buy a car far away, go out and drive it back. In my daydreams it's usually a classic of some kind, but you're a lot likely to make it back than I would be in any realistic version of that scenario. :)

I'm less sure about that than I'd like, the trip back has a lot more miles and a lot less time than really lends itself to 'safety'. I'm likely to prang a moose at 90 in the middle of the Yukon.

I'm just aggravated that I have to do this. I'd rather give the money to a local dealership and just get the car (and trade in the old one, so it goes away!), but they don't seem interested in returning my emails or anything.

   Dammit.

You're coming to my home turf -- close enough for a day trip, at any rate -- and of course you're coming on the day when I'm going to be ass-deep in alligators at LAX instead of actually in these parts.

Next time my better half is up in your area (or I am, though that's less likely) we're doing something. I dunno what. But something.

Good luck on the car front. And I've ridden with you, I know you're a better driver than that. You won't prang a moose... by accident, anyway.

Or the Meeses have a thing about blokes in cars...

During the 2400+ miles of drive from Portland to Wasilla, I did in fact encounter a moose. I panic-stopped, and on sodden wet roads at 30 farenheit, the Mazda went into Full ABS, remained controllable, did not pivot or get abnormal, and Just Fucking Stopped. About ten feet shy of 1800 pounds of traffic hazard.

Good car.

Congratulations on your excellent choice in automotive purchases!

Whitetails are bad enough. The possibility of a moose encounter gives me nightmares.

Good car indeed. There are many things you want to avoid in your auto, but moose are absolutely up there. Mostly because they're, well, up there. Lots of weight high up on tall spindly legs. Ick.

You'll be driving within 800m of my house on saturday (5 north of seattle), but I'll be attending PAX so busy all weekend. :(
