10. "RE: Would you like some wine with that cheese?"

One hates to be contrarian (a blatant lie if you look at my previous posts around here =] ), but I've never found bands like Gloryhammer to be particularly fun or funny: they're just trying way too hard. It's the same problem I have with Tenacious D, as much as that's internet heresy. Their satire of the genre and its attendant tropes (fantasy metal for Gloryhammer, cock rock for the D) feels very forced to me, and therefore quite snide and mocking; laughing at rather than laughing with. I'd offer as a counter-example Let The Flames Grow by Greek power metallers Wardrum, possibly the greatest anime opening theme to ever lack an attendant series (right down to the slightly mangled English of the lyrics). Unlike anything by Gloryhammer, it's played absolutely straight, right down to the bone. There's no artifice, no archness, no sense that the musicians think they're too good for the genre; Wardrum's just some guys trying to be as metal as they can. I find their earnestness and sincerity far more appealing than the self-satisfied irony of Gloryhammer. Then again, I accept that I may well be in the minority here, and I must stress I'm not trying to harsh anyone's buzz here. If you enjoy them, enjoy them! And continue to do so! I'm just not as keen, that's all, and wanted to share an alternative. =] --- "She's old, she's lame, she's barren too, // "She's not worth feed or hay, // "But I'll give her this," - he blew smoke at me - // "She was something in her day." -- Garnet Rogers, Small Victory FiMFiction.net: we might accept blatant porn involving the cast of My Little Pony but as God is my witness we have standards. |
