>You would think with the Coronavirus, and most everyone staying at >home, this forum would be a lot more active now than before. But this >is like walking into a grocery store and finding bare shelves..... > >Craig I have to imagine a lot of folks are doing triage on their lives. Hunting for supplies, caring for kids who suddenly have no school, scrambling to set up work-from-home (or emergency funding for necessities if they're now out of work,) all that sort of thing. Though I will take this prompt to be grateful for G and the whole EPU author pool for supplying such an extensive library of hopeful entertainment, I expect it will be handy for many in time.

Sorry, Venkman, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought. --G. (well, all right, maybe not that bad, but I mean, the setup was there) -><- Benjamin D. Yeah, that's just about how I feel. I consider myself incredibly lucky I have a good IT job now. 7 or so years ago, I was serving in restaurants. My family pushed me into getting certs and getting a job that made use of my talents, and I owe them so much just for that kick in the ass I needed. As for telework, I don't even know how often I'll be doing that. My job status is changing on Monday (though not my job itself, for the most part) so the rules are somewhat in the air. I know all about supporting people and helping out more telework stragglers, though! There's no way to image new machines remotely, so anyone teleworking is helping out with the considerable call volume. The biggest problem is telework on this scale is new to us, so we're running into new problems, not just things we know how to fix. Especially problems with configuration that has to be done at work, so they end up having to come in. It's not fun, but hey, we're all learning now. ------ Authors of our fates Orchestrate our fall from grace Poorest players on the stage Our defiance drives us straight to the edge

>Personally, I work in said grocery store. When not on the clock >dealing with a massive increase in business, I'm at home playing video >games to try and maintain my fragile grip on sanity, or sleeping to >regain energy for the next round. You know how you see people walk up to uniformed military personnel they do not know and say "thank you for your service," and it's always kind of weird and awkward even if they're being sincere about it? Well, and I sincerely mean this, thank you for your service. --G. I'm doing my part to help by resisting all attempts to make me go to the store when I don't need to, I don't care if your husband is nagging you that he's out of cream soda, mother. It's a global crisis, tell him to find some fucking perspective somewhere. -><- Benjamin D. Since the last time I posted on here (err, assuming that wasn't yesterday or something) I've helped my employer migrate 40 staff to 100% at-home working (leaving 2 people in the office); supported those 40 staff including guiding the on-site staff into doing all kinds of exciting computer support jobs as remote hands, been to Accident and Emergency because I stuck a knife into my finger (fortunately stopping just before the bone), helped keep a whole bunch of extrovert friends alive with video calls, and suffered from a bout of bacterial sinusitis that's left me unclear what month it even is any more. And looked after my husband who had nearly all of the above plus building an entire new system to support people supporting companies needing help with the economic conditions and vestibular neuritis along with the sinus infection. Yesterday he said "today is the first entire day when I've known where 'down' is for a month". I thought lockdown was going to mean extra leisure time, I honestly did! :-D |
