No cute nickname.

103.3 W. B. C. X. New Avalon's all rock station.

Good evening, Avalon County! This is the Iceman, Bobby Drake, and you're listening to WBCX, New Avalon's rock station. In honor of, well, me, I'm making this weekend an all-eighties weekend. And that's the NINETEEN. Eighties. I'm talking about there, so get out your Members Only jackets and your skinny ties, because we're gonna ride the New Wave all over again. First up, it's New Order with the story of my life, "Bizarre Looooove Triangle". Keep it here on 103.3.

[New Order: "Bizarre Love Triangle", Substance]

Say, listen, Avalonians - have you ever wondered why stuff from the second half of the twentieth century is so popular in the galaxy today? A lot of people have a lot of theories. Some people say it's because that's when the original Wedge Defenders come from, and they have some kind of weird cultural stranglehold on the galaxy. Other people say it's 'cause of Queen Asrial of Salusia and the fact that she married a guy from the same basic neighborhood, epochally speaking. Me? I think it's because the music was so. damn. cool. This is AC/DC, whose lead singer you will be SHOCKED to learn is NOT the Decepticon Starscream, with "You Shook Me All Night Long".

[AC/DC: "You Shook Me All Night Long", Who Made Who]

[Eurythmics: "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", Sweet Dreams]

OK! That was the Eurythmics with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" - hear the parentheses? - which will now be stuck in your heads all night. You're welcome! And now, some ads. Who knows? Maybe the Avalon Cellular jingle will drive Annie out of your head. But you'll wish it hadn't!

[meta: The Art of Noise NA: "Rockin' in the Free World", Incidents & Accidents. real: Big Country: "Rockin' in the Free World", Kings of Emotion]

A sharp-eared viewer has just called to chew me out. Yes, I'm busted, I admit it: The version of "Rockin' in the Free World" I just played was, in fact, a modern cover by the incredible Art of Noise. But, listen, have you ever heard Neil Young's voice? Trust me, I'm from the 20th century, and I did you guys a favor. Next up is another cheat - this song is actually from 1990, but I couldn't let you guys leave tonight without hearing the. primo. makeout song of my college days. Sit back and loosen your tie, it's time for Enigma's "The Principles of Lust".

[Enigma: "The Principles of Lust", MCMXC a.D.]

While we're all in a romantic mood, I have a dedication to make. This next song goes out with love to my dear friend Emma, who demonstrated to me that people who end up getting their consciousnesses switched into someone else's body really DO think of THAT FIRST: here's the diVinyls with "I Touch Myself".

[diVinyls: "I Touch Myself", diVinyls]

So that was for you, Emma, and by the way - you still owe me MY turn. OK! Up next, more of the same. Let's see... ah! Turn this one up, kids, and try to figure out all the ancient historical references!

[Billy Joel: "We Didn't Start the Fire", Storm Front]

That was Billy Joel with "We Didn't Start the Fire", and if you didn't get any of the references, ask a history major. You're listening to the Iceman, Bobby Drake, and while I'm on songs full of obscure references, if I haven't paralyzed my two best pals with nostalgia yet tonight, I'm just about to: It's R.E.M. with "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)".

[R.E.M.: "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)", Document]

While I'm preying on my old friends who may be listening to the show tonight, I'm gonna do another dedication to a lady I've known for a good long time. Jeanie, if you're tuned in, this one's for you.

[The Cult: "Fire Woman", Sonic Temple]

That was the Cult with "Fire Woman", and trust me, if you knew Jean, you'd understand. Looks like it's about time for the news. Good thing this isn't a news station! Instead, get out your hair-metal wig and sing along. I talked to Joe Elliott the other day and he STILL can't believe he ever liked his hair the way it was in this video.

[Def Leppard "Armageddon It", Hysteria]

Ah, "Armageddon It", Def Leppard's subtlest tune. "This song is not about a nuclear war," indeed. The video for "Women" was cooler, though. Maybe we'll play that one later this weekend.

So I was walking down the street the other day, and a guy said to me, "Hey, aren't you Bobby Drake?" And I said "Yeah," and he said, "Why do you always say you're the coolest DJ on the air? That's kind of arrogant, don't you think?" And he's right. It is arrogant. So from now on I'm just gonna say I'm the best DJ on the air. Though I still think I'm also the coolest. I mean, let's see Crazy Eddie over on WQQB turn his whole body into ice. You're listening to 103.3 WBCX.

[Genesis: "Invisible Touch", Invisible Touch]

I'm the Iceman, Bobby Drake, and you just heard "Invisible Touch" by the second version of Genesis. Anybody want some cheesy poufs? Let's have some cheesy poufs.

[Frankie Goes to Hollywood: "Relax", Welcome to the Pleasuredome]

My, my. Frankie Goes to Hollywood. "Relax". I had forgotten how annoying that song is. OK, I'm never playing that again. Moving right along... hmm. Kitty? If you're listening, you'll want to go find something else to do for the next four minutes, because I'm about to play a song you hate unconditionally. For everybody else, here's the Scorpions with "Rock You Like a Hurricane", which I still think needs some parentheses in there somewhere.

[Scorpions: "Rock You Like a Hurricane", Big City Night]

OK, Don, you can go get Kitty out of the computer room now. While we're waiting for that to get done, I guess I'll kill a little airtime by taking a call! Yo! You're on the air with the Iceman on WBCX.

Yes, I was listening to your show, and you said you could turn your whole body into rice. Now that's physically impossible, you know, and-

Uh, ma'am? I said ice. Ice. Not rice.

Oh. That's very different. Never mind.

... ooooooo... kay. And on that note, here's something else with hard-to-follow words.

[Europe: "The Final Countdown", The Final Countdown]

That was Europe with "The Final Countdown". The great thing about that song is that it's OK that the lyrics are hard to understand, because if you could understand them, they wouldn't make the slightest bit of sense anyway. You've just gotta love that keyboard riff, though. Now here's Queen with the official theme song of my good buddies in the Interscholastic Duelists' Federation, "Prrrrinces of the Universe"!

[Queen: "Princes of the Universe", A Kind of Magic]

Hey, remember my friends that I paralyzed with nostalgia earlier? I just found something in my Big Stack of 80s Stuff that's going to lay 'em right out on the floor. You guys can brace yourselves if you want, but it's not gonna do any good! The Iceman knows you too well. MUA-hahahahaha!

[Night Ranger: "Sister Christian", Midnight Madness]

You just heard "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger, and assuming I didn't just lose two of my audience, you're all still listening to the Iceman on 103.3. Now let's go for something just completely incomprehensible. Got to give my friends some time to recover if they're still tuned in, y'know. Tan mientras que estamos esperando, vamos escuchar eso la obra clįsica inmortal, "Mexican Radio" por Wall of Voodoo.

[Wall of Voodoo: "Mexican Radio", Call of the West

My solemn promise to you, loyal listeners: I will never play anything by Berlin. But here's a song from the same movie as that really annoying Berlin song.

[Kenny Loggins: "Danger Zone", Top Gun soundtrack]

Do I even have to backannounce that one? Is there anyone who doesn't know by now that Kenny Loggins did "Danger Zone"? Is there anyone who doesn't know that Modern English did "I Melt With You"? Well, if you didn't, Modern English did "I Melt With You". On every album they ever released. And here it is. I'm the Iceman, and I'll stop the world and melt with you, baby.

[Modern English: "I Melt With You", which really was on all their albums]

While we're doing bands with "English" in the name, here's one from Bad English, a band which also had bad hairdos and bad lyrics.

[Bad English: "Forget Me Not", Bad English]

Hey, who's in the mood for a slammin' keyboard intro?

[Journey: "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", Frontiers

Awwww, yeah. That was Journey with "Separate Ways". Anybody else remember the cover to that album? With the big blue head? That was on their video game. Name another band that had a video game! Besides the Clay Pigeons. All right, I gotta run some more ads. Leave the room for four minutes and come back to hear the Smithereens describe what it's like behind the wall of sleep. This is WBCX.

[Smithereens: "Behind the Wall of Sleep", Especially for You

The Smithereens! "Behind the Wall of Sleep", an undeniably worthy song. Reminds me of the manager for the Art of Noise, except she doesn't play bass guitar or wear black. She's tall, though. Definitely tall. All right, that's enough true confession. I know! Let's hear from another continent. We've heard from Europe; let's see what Asia has to say.

[Asia: "The Heat Goes On", Astra]

Asia says "The Heat Goes On". Good to know, although personally, I like it cool. Well, New Avalon, it's getting late, and I have to go to my other job in the morning, so I guess it's time to wrap this thing up and leave you in the capable hands of Mr. Bob "Wild Thing" Freeberg on the overnight. Let's mellow things out with a little KLF.

[KLF: "Last Train to Trancentral", The White Room]

... the searching will be over, the call will now be gentle, in the carriage, on the fast train, of the last train, to Trancentral. That's the news and I am outta here. Get some sleep, Avalon County, 'cause I'm back on tomorrow at 8. Unless, you know, the Chief sends me to whip up on some bad guys or something.

I have seen him play this song live 4 times now.
Every time he's flubbed at least one line, or at least swapped it with something else. It's also very amusing to watch Elton John just kinda sit there and try and keep up on the piano.

>So I was walking down the street the other day, and a guy said to me,

This amused..hell, still amuses me greatly.

CHEESY POUFS!!

Thank you, Mr. Drake.

>[Queen: "Princes of the Universe", A Kind of Magic]

It took me a couple of parses to actually *get* that all the way. Thanks, now I'm going to have *three* people fighting for mental screentime everytime I hear this song...which *just* popped up on xmms. Stop that, computer.

>You just heard "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger, and assuming I
>didn't just lose two of my audience, you're all still listening to the

You know..it might be something resembling a sin for anyone who was actually semi-coherent during the '80's, but I *hate* that song. ;-)

*This* song on the other hand, I am fully in support of playing. Just not over, and over, and over like Star 105 (the 80's and nothing more!) in Vegas does.

>[Kenny Loggins: "Danger Zone", Top Gun soundtrack]

Heh. "Every movie made from 1982 'til 1990 that an 8-12 year old would like was required by law or something to have at least one Kenny Loggins song or one by Cheap Trick in it. Making Top Gun fully compliant with *two* Kenny Loggins songs *and* a Cheap Trick song."

>I'm the Iceman, and I'll stop the
>world and melt with you, baby.

Dude..I can just *hear* him saying that with a smarmy little smirk on his face and a vodka martini (in an ice glass) to give to the lady.

>Awwww, yeah. That was Journey with "Separate Ways". Anybody else

Aerosmith. Really bad arcade shooter. You shot CD's at the bad guys, who were trying to keep the music locked down. Best forgotten.

As was mentionned, Aerosmith. I actually saw the game in an arcade where I excecised my Virtua Cop skillz. Never played it. The graphics were utter crap.

actually, I took that as a Saturday Night Live reference; especially with the "oh, never mind" at the end. Wish I could remember the name of the comedienne who made that famous, though.

OK, here's the scoop. Many years ago the late Gilda Radner played a character on Saturday Night Live named Emily Litella, who was a critic on the "weekend Update" segment. She would constantly come out ranting about something which she had "misheard", such as "youth in aisa" (euthinasia), "Soviet Jewelry" (Soviet Jewry), etc. After a minute or two she would be corrected, at which point she would just respond with a "never mind..." and life would go on. It was a schtick she did very well, and Gryph was using it as inspiration for the caller...

That's the same visual I get when hearing the song. The two were so made for each other. I had it queued when reading NXE:TMP too.

I believe what was meant was a real honest to goodness 'video game', as in large colorful wooden thing with a tv screen that you put quarters in, and yes, I did play it......god I'm old :-{
