The second video included in that article (the one that isn't the press conference) is epic. You shouldn't watch in polite company, though. Or at least wear headphones.

I asked my father, who worked as an engineer in a paper mill (not this one) for 40-odd years, for his thoughts on the matter. Key takeaway:

So yeah, I've been having some discussions with folks vis-a-vis what we'll call "field expedient sanitizer production" - stills are super easy to make, but the key thing to remember is that you want to be -very careful- about ensuring that your boiling vessel has pressure relief built in, lest a little obstruction in the condenser leads to - well, what we just saw here.

< Also if you intend to drink it, discard the first cup or so of what comes out. You do not want it. Fine for disinfecting the hands, but it'll strike you blind otherwise. >

   Not counting the time to get up to pressure, my instant pot does it in about ~5 minutes? Plus ~10-15 for the depressurization. I haven't messed with it much but if I can get a thing of steel cut oats amid the grocerypocalpyse I might make a big batch or two.

   I do my steel-cut overnight-style. It's not quick to cook, exactly, but I can make a big batch for the week in about 10 minutes of actual work time.
