Description: Indiana Jones is a rangy human male who appears to be in his late thirties. He is weatherbeaten but handsome and has a distinctive scar on his chin. When encountered in the field, he will generally be wearing khaki traveling clothes, a battered bomber jacket, and a much-traveled brown fedora hat.

Notes: Indiana Jones was one of the greatest adventurers of twentieth-century Earth. An archaeologist, antiquarian, and international man of action, he battled Nazis, plunderers, and opportunists over some of the world's most powerful and significant artifacts. No less an authority than the 22nd-century archaeologist-historian Lara Langley-Croft called him "the undisputed godfather of our dangerous profession" in her 2145 book, Raiders and Crusaders: A History of Adventure Archaeology.

In 1938, Jones was forced by agents of Nazi Germany (a country with whose agents he clashed numerous times during its 12-year history) to recover the Holy Grail, an artifact of tremendous mystic significance and power. Legend had it that whoever drank from the Grail would be blessed with the gift of eternal life. During the course of the incident, Jones and his father, Dr. Henry Jones, Sr., both drank from the cup. It restored the elder Jones to health following a serious gunshot wound, but had no apparent effect on the younger.

Not until the 1950s did it occur to Indy that neither he nor his father seemed to be getting any older. After some consideration, both Doctors Jones decided that there was nothing to do but go on with their lives as before and see what happened next.

What happened next, just months after Indiana's hundredth birthday, was First Contact with Salusia and the sudden, dizzying opening of Earth to a galactic culture. To the elder Jones, this meant little other than a greater variation of appearance among the students in his medieval literature classes at Princeton. To Indy, on the other hand, it meant that the scope of antiquity and the breadth of the field for the seeking of archaeological treasures had just widened exponentially.

The younger Jones left Earth in 2003, during the planet's first wave of extrasolar expansion. He went first to Salusia, then the capital of the United Galactica and the site of the most extensive store of galactic history available. Then, having soaked up as much academic knowledge of the galaxy's history as he could stand in one sitting (as it were), he went into the newly expanded field for the first time.

Since then, Indy's life has followed much the same pattern that it followed on Earth, except on a grander scale. He spends much of the year on Tomodachi, where he has held a position in the School of Antiquities at that world's oldest institution of higher learning, Hotohori University, since 2025. When not there, he's "in the field", combining the search for the galaxy's antiquities with a series of two-fisted adventures, mainly involving people who would use those antiquities for evil.

His busy and chaotic schedule leaves him no time to join the International Police officially, but he has accepted the Lens and keeps in touch. Several membes of the force are old friends, including the Chief, whom he first met in 2076 on Salusia during a search for the Tomb of Cheltaria.

Though he has never had any particular training other than as a scientist, Indiana Jones is a natural man of action and has picked up a good many unusual skills over the course of his centuries of adventuring. Simply through long, varied, and often painful experience, he has become an expert hand-to-hand combatant, though he uses no particular style (Expert of Justice Jackie Chan has referred to him as an "inspired brawler"). He is a master marksman with small arms and an able climber, caver, parachutist, motorcyclist, animal rider, driver, and pilot. He is a strong swimmer and adept at zero-G maneuvering. He has also developed the unique ability to use a bullwhip in a variety of ways, including as a surprisingly effective weapon and as a climbing tool.

His cerebral abilities are no less impressive. Dr. Jones can read, write, and speak uncounted languages both ancient and modern, and learns new ones with great facility. Under his fedora rests an encyclopedic knowledge of the history and culture of the galaxy, all its major cultures past and present, and many of its minor ones. He is also an expert at anticipating, avoiding, and disarming security systems and booby traps of all types and technologies, from the primitive to the cutting-edge. In another life he would have made a magnificent sneak thief.

Indy's greatest strengths are his talent for improvisation and his dogged determination. Though not fearless, he can and does overcome his fears through sheer cussedness, and simply refuses to lie down and die no matter how dire the circumstances nor how great the odds against him are. Recognizing that no plan ever survives contact with the enemy, Indy prefers not to make them, instead simply making everything up as he goes along. This seat-of-the-pants approach would get lesser adventurers killed (and has), but Indy's combination of skill, stubbornness, and luck have seen him through so far.

Indiana Jones is an affable, likeable man, at ease in the modern world but deeply connected to a past so remote that his own extended lifespan is insignificant in comparison. Perhaps that very remoteness is what makes it so easy for him to cope with his longevity. In the field, he can be intense and driven, especially when his objective is in sight, and he has very strong opinions involving the misuse of artifacts. Unlike many of the modern era's so-called "tomb raiders", Indy believes that significant artifacts belong to all people. Many is the profit-seeker or hunter after power who has heard his outraged cry, which has become something of a mantra to his supporters in the field of archaeology: "That belongs in a museum!"

Inapplicable. The UF and NXE universes are (fairly obviously, I should think, given the UF universe's documented late-20th-century Earth history) not the same universe.

So this is just meta-verse leakage, like with Misato or the crew of the WDF Enterprise - people who might exist in another universe, but just not in the way we're familiar?

That's one way of putting it, yes. Another would be that it was a tongue-in-cheek throwaway reference and folks really shouldn't get too excited about it. :)

Well said. I do look forward to seeing her in action in the UF though, if that time ever comes. ^_^ I do have to wonder about the family name of Langely-Croft and how it works in the UF.

BTW... Bringing Indy into the UF? Oh god! This is priceless! And people keep on wondering why I read you guys' stuff...

Just as a random observation: If I were a betting man, I'd bet that Lara Langley-Croft died of old age in the late 2100s. Seeing as the active storylines are mostly FI, you probably aren't going to see her any time soon.

Personally, I like it that way.

I Don't mind it either way... if lara is dead then at least she is stil mentioned in uf.
If she is alive still then great, uf has another nice piece to be seen whenever gryphon feels that it is time she makes an apearance :)

I guess it would depend on what Lupin was up too, in my book. As long as he isn't pilfering some ancient treasure to give to a private collector, Indy wouldnt have a problem with him.

I dunno, I'm sure they have. ;)

But Lupin, in what I've seen of him so far, is more interested in the cash value than an artifacts or other stuff. He's in it for the money. If Indy's backers are willing to pay well, Lupin'd be willing to negotiate.

If Fujiko didn't get there first, that is.

This is GREAT! There needs to be a Lensmen adventure featuring Indy, Quatermain, Nemo, Jackie Chan, the cast of "Privateer" and Nadia Davion in a sort of "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" hunt across Known Space. I would pay serious money to see that.
