I have to say, only slightly apropos of this, that some of the "casting" choices in the game are a little suspect. I mean, one of the submarines I'm seeing a lot of fan art for is I-8, a boat that was infamous for its crew's habit of committing atrocity-grade war crimes on survivors from ships they'd sunk. Now, I realize that the modern Japanese attitude toward WWII Japan's war crimes record is... unique... but dang, you guys. Was the joke about her having made a trip to Germany really worth that level of baggage?

>>Gosh. They may have to start including ships from Allied navies at

Oh dear. With (as previously discussed) their regrettable American-submarine names. And their torpedoes that don't work.

I find myself inevitably picturing that bitchy carrier (Kaga, I think?) inquiring of a group of the new American arrivals, "So, I'm curious. Why are you S-class submarines called 'pig boats'? Are you gluttonous, slovenly, or some combination of the two?" And then there is an almighty fistfight. Kaga could probably take a few, but there are 51 of them. :)

(The S-boats would also be sensitive about their wide sterns. Needlessly so, as it happens, because they're quite well-proportioned and stable, but still, it's that kind of show.)

>No, the cruelest joke was played on Isuzu. She could be refitted

That was pretty mean. Still, I have a hard time shaking off that one fanart I saw of the group of Maru-yu cowering in a corner, crying, "Admiral is going to feed us to the battleships! We're not food!" Poor Maru-yu.

Fortunately, the TV series at least seems to be taking the view that the ship girls are individuals (unlike in the game, where you can apparently have a dozen ships that are not just Isuzu-class, but are in fact Isuzu). (Although that does mean it's even sadder when one gets sunk, because you know they can't just work the RNG until they get her back.)

>>As an aside, the KanColle version of Kirishima is on my short

They seem to do battleships better over there. I mean, Fog Haruna's shtick with the memorizing words is cute, but the KanColle Kongō-class as a team are just a lot more fun. And Hyūga, but then, Fog Hyūga annoys the crap outta me anyway, so almost anybody would be an improvement there. :)

(It'd be one thing if Fog Hyūga was really as crazy as she seems. Then she'd still be annoying, but at least you could write it off as, oh well, the poor girl's damaged. The fact that she's pretty obviously just using her eccentricity as cover for being a huge jerk is offputting.)

I know, right? Most of my take on the Arpeggio characters in UF does come from the anime, but if and when Maya shows up, she's not gonna be a Predacon shell program. That was just nasty-ass writing. That was a full-dress hey-fuck-you.

>>A meeting between those two would be like a theoretical face-to-face

"You and your sisters are excessively boisterous. It's unseemly. Beneath the dignity of fast battleships." "Ha, you sound like Nagato now. Have some of this cake, it's awesome."

It's not our fault! We just have that kind of face.

Your main problem there is that you'd have to figure out a way to work around Mutsu. And there's a lot of Mutsu to work around, know what I mean? :)

Don't worry, though, I'll help. She's borderline, but there's somethin' about Mutsu. :)

Mutsu's pretty damned cool in her own right, even if the snail-eyestalk antennae are very very doofy.

So I'd say that hell, any relationship does better when it starts with a common interest...

To be fair, she's hardly cornered the market on weird-looking accessories. The pre-refit Kongō class appear to be wearing headpieces whose primary components are a pair of large Philips screwdriver bits. (I guess they're supposed to be radar aerials?)

>So I'd say that hell, any relationship does better when it starts with

True. And she does seem like the sort of gal who would be a solid wingman if you could get her on side in the first place. I just suspect it would be nervous-making to try and outline the principle of "sharing is caring" to a battery of 410mm naval guns, is all. :)

Somewhere beneath all those turrets, Ise and Hyuuga are carrying katanas. I'm not sure how either of them would even draw the things, let alone get their guns far enough out of the way to actually hit somebody with the blade.

She's my second-favorite character in the show.

Almost everybody is my second-favorite character in the show. It's inconvenient. :)

(I have, for instance, developed an unseemly wuv for the entire Kongō class. And EilaShimakaze. Most of the destroyers. Carrier Division 1. Mogami. I don't even know why I love Mogami, she's had like 15 seconds of screen time in the 10 eps I've watched so far, I just do. Maybe it's the shorts.)

...I'll have to part ways with you here. I like Akagi as much as the next guy, but honestly, Zuikaku's right. Kaga is a vicious sneering bully every time she can find an excuse to be; only the fact that she's Great Stone Face about it keeps it from being obvious.

See, I thought that too? Until I realized that Zuikaku spends every waking moment engaged in blatant provocation of the most petty and irritating kind. So now I'm kind of undecided, because yeah, Kaga is an unremitting bitch to her, but on the other hand, she works hard to earn it. Maybe what really needs to happen is for Akagi and Shokaku to team up and let the other two go enjoy their toxic, spite-filled distaff bromance someplace where the rest of us don't have to watch them. :)

Also: Atago! I forgot to mention Atago. Which is admittedly not that hard given the paucity of her screen time, but still, it's such a refreshing change to meet a Takao-class heavy cruiser who's just nice. :)

(This version of Takao might be as well, I don't know. She doesn't say enough to get a read on.)

I'm not sure about Yandere-class torpedo cruiser over there, though. That one's gonna be trouble. :)

Pan-paka-paaaan!

If I recall my doujin right, Atago's kind of an airhead, however pleasant a one, and Takao's the one in the background sighing and getting ready to clean up her mess.

Well, Kitakami is obviously deliberately winding her up at several points, so apparently she thinks that psycho stalkers are cute or something. I'd say that they deserve each other.

The writers pretended to resolve the issue at the end of one episode, then randomly brought it back in a later one when they had a couple of minutes to fill and evidently couldn't think of any other convenient way to fill them with resentment and jealousy. I guess they were only pretending to have become able to stand each other in order to humor Fubuki? w/e, guys.

It's a shame, too, because I know they were reaching for the historical reference there - the real-life Carrier Groups 1 and 5 had a pretty nasty rivalry - but it's not really in keeping with the rest of the show's theme, and sticking to it anyway seems kind of in bad taste. (I've seen some artwork where they seem to have more of a mildly sarcastic senpai-kōhai relationship, which is kind of cute, and grates less than Mutually Assured Disrespect.) Better, if they were going to do the "I hate Carrier Group 1" shtick at all, to let it stay resolved mid-series; better still would've been to just go ahead and use a K-Z friendship as a mechanism for exploring the idea that maybe the fleet girls aren't slaves to their namesakes' destinies.

But, you know, that's probably the point at which I start expecting too much of light entertainment programming. :)

Huh? Oh. I didn't mean - I actually just meant team up, I wasn't thinking of that. Besides, it would break poor Fubuki's heart. :)

Well, you can't really blame the writers, because they're just working with the source material, where yes, the whole K-Z business boil down to the historical rivalry between the 1st and 5th Carrier Divisions. Really, if it helps to make sense, think of them as basically being the carrier equivalents of Rei and Asuka. Kaga is the kuudere who's bad at expressing her emotions, while Zuikaku is the tsundere who is hiding her own doubts about her abilities and her feelings of inferiority behind bravado and a hair trigger temper.

>I'll be generous and assume that she doesn't really understand
>that she's juggling hand grenades. :)

Believe it or not, this Ooi is actually very tame compared to how she used to be depicted. That probably has a lot to do with the introduction of the (provisional) marriage system, which has led to her being strictly Kitakami-sexual to more "It's okay if it's you" with admirals. She's still totally devoted to her first love, but she no longer threatens to torpedo admirals who get too friendly with Kitakami.

I can blame them for pretending to resolve it and then walking it back, at least. :)

... Which is kind of funny, since both Langley and Sōryū actually were aircraft carriers. Ayanami was a destroyer, though. (And - naturally! - the latter two already exist as KanColle characters.) Everydangbody in Evangelion is named after a WWII-era IJN ship. Heck, Maya Ibuki's named after two. :)

>She's still totally devoted to her first love,
>but she no longer threatens to torpedo admirals who get too friendly
>with Kitakami.

Which is good, since torpedoing admirals is probably against regulations.

(I'm fuzzy on how torpedoes even are a thing vs. fleet girls, since they don't actually have, you know... waterlines or anything; but, hey. :)

One terrible danger of doing anything with this concept as part of Our Witches at War is simply one of personnel management. I mean, the mere sight of Nagato or Mutsu could cause Yoshika Miyafuji to walk straight into a wall.

(Come to think of it, Yoshika and Fubuki are a lot alike. They both have that timid-new-kid-makes-good thing going on, and Fubuki is a lot subtler about it, but I think they also share that quality of being modest and polite young ladies who are actually barely contained randy beasts. :)

I hope Imperial Fusō Navy dogtags specify the wearer's blood type, is all I'm saying.

Although, actually, I still think Nagato would pose the greatest danger, if only because she'd probably mistake Yoshika for a destroyer and want to cuddle her.

Yes, yes they did. And as you might imagine, she's quite popular, to the point where she got her own Christmas art, and was brought back in a "midboss" form for a later event, just so people could get more of her.

To make things better, if the anime keeps with its "historical parallel" bent, then the fleet to face off against her is going to consist of the 4 Akatsuki-class DDs, CV Ryuujou, and CV Jun'you, the alcoholic party carrier. I can't see that ending any way other than "she followed us home, can we keep her?"

Oh, Destroyer Squadron 6, could you possibly get any more adorable?

Well, I suppose you could have Akatsuki from Log Horizon, but come to think of it, the destroyer of the same name has a similar coloration and some of the same hang-ups. :)

>CV Jun'you, the alcoholic party carrier.

I have no joke, I just like saying "the alcoholic party carrier". Although the mental image that gives me is more along the lines of "carrier" as in "of disease", such that basically everybody who comes into contact with her ends up with a bad case of party. Although carriers usually aren't affected by the malady they're carrying, by definition, so the metaphor isn't perfect. :)

When considering English dialogue for Yūdachi, the instinctive method is to use "poi" the way the Smurfs use "smurf", but I'm 87% sure this is not a correct port of its usage in the original Japanese. :)

Well, it could be worse. I read one fic where "smurf" was used in a way that made me think of a stereotype gangbanger with an automatic censoring system.

The explanation I've seen for "poi" is that it's a word you tack onto the end of a sentence when you're unsure of what you're saying, which is supposed to reflect the uncertainty of Yūdachi's achievements during the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The English equiv would be to pepper your speech with "like," which combines with her carefree personality to leave Yūdachi sounding like a Valley Girl.

Heh, after posting that I looked at her page on the English-language KanColle wikia, and noticed that whoever translated her in-game dialogue there - possibly feeling that the "like" thing was either not a close enough analog or would just be too annoying, opted instead to append "-ish" to most of her adjectives. Which doesn't actually manage to be less annoying, so, no points for whoever made that decision. :)

I guess it's a bit easier with ships like Ryūjō, who speaks in Kansai-ben, because most translators decided ages ago that the English equivalent is a Southern accent.

I've seen it both ways over the years, but translators seemed to settle awhile back on a Southern accent. Really, it goes either way, as Kansai-ben is a very informal, gruff sort of dialect, reflecting the fact that the region has traditionally been a major hub of commerce and trading. Thing is, her namesake was built in Yokohama and fitted out in Yokosuka, so she should speak with a Kantō accent. It's sort of like meeting a girl who lived all her life in Boston, but speaks like came from the Deep South.

Well, you know. Sailors. They pick up all kinds of weird things.

(Which reminds me - I'm sure it's just a rating thing that they don't have one, but I would be very amused if there was a fleet girl who actually talked like... well, a fuckin' sailor, you know? There's the one who always calls the player "you shitty admiral," but apart from that... :)

There was a doujin I encountered* where Inazuma was serving as secretary ship for a very, um, enthusiastically incompetent Admiral, leading to some gratuitously profane breakdowns, but I suppose that's less sailor-speak and more workplace-induced stress.

*I believe the doujin in question exists only as a linked thread of images on Notsafe!booru, which makes it rather difficult to present in any coherent manner.

Well, the designers have never said where the accent came from, so the theory is she picked it up from one of her captains. Sort of like how Jun'yō is believed to have picked up her love of drinking from her third captain, who anonymously crashed a drinking party that the junior officers were holding on base the day before he was supposed to arrive to take command.

Ah, Akebono, yeah, she definitely has a mouth on her. Though you're right, most of it is just verbally abusing the admiral. But, like several of the girls after the introduction of the (provisional) marriage system, it turns out she's just a tsundere with a very abrasive "tsun" side.

The only thing that makes the mental image funnier is imagining Arpeggio Kongou doing that.

"I don't want to alarm you, Admiral, but I'm afraid Kongō and Kongō might have switched minds after that last photonic armor experiment."

"Oh, great. So now the one with incredible strength and weird gravity weapons is looking to jump me, and the one with a full suite of compact personal artillery is presumably shelling Anchorage in a fit of para-existential pique."

"Pretty much, yes."

I've often thought it was a shame that anime is dubbed into American and not British English. Translating the Tokyo accent as RP, and Kansai-ben as Scouse or Geordie, would be much more accurate...

I think this is the least worst way to do it, especially for writing- tacking "-ish" on to stuff makes her sound drunk, and sprinkling "poi"s around gets jarring unless all the other Japanese inflections are present as well.

Though it could always be worse, a couple times in the anime (and other works), Yuudachi ends up sounding more like she's related to Mokona from MKR.

Mentioned a bunch of other characters I particularly like and forgot to take note of fleet communications ship Ōyodo, who - despite the outstanding efforts of the entire Kongō class! - has the moment of all moments in episode 4.

If the dark and disturbing interpretations of the shipgirls' situation get too unpleasant, there's always Hisahiko's take on the situation (Notsafe!booru pool, so standard warnings apply, and hopefully you don't mind mousing over dialogue to read it).

For a taste of what it's like, here's Hisahiko's take on the ending of Episode 3

I found this incredibly interesting Kantai Collection fanfic the other day, written by someone on the spacebattles/sufficient velocity crowd. It's called 'The Greatest Generation', and it's set in a slightly next-sunday-AD setting where the Abyssal fleets are appearing and terrorizing most of the world, and the shipgirls, correspondingly, are awakening to handle them... except they're under the jurisdiction of the UN, they're spread thinly, and an awful lot of them have... opinions, or even worse lack of understanding, about the actual historical background of WW2.

And then a naval intelligence officer named Yvonne Swanson gets involved to try and find out why the Kanmusu aren't responding to US summons for help, and things get... interesting.

You can check it out at https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11187030/1/Kantai-Collection-The-Greatest-Generation , and tvtropes has links to its in progress threads at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/TheGreatestGeneration. It's ongoing, though.

I just figured you meant it as another entry in the "if you're scarred from the grimdark" column, although upon further review of your summary, I can see why that might not be the case. :)

I don't usually go for the cute couple names portmanteau thing, but "Zuikaga" has a nice ring to it. Maybe because it seems like it could be an actual name.

I like the idea of them together, because it pushes some of that whole "doomed by history" crap out of the way, and also because it tends to be cute and subtle.

although compared to Ooi's antics, firing off a 21-gun salute every time something happened in somebody's love life would be subtle.

Well, in fairness, part of the subtlety is just a side effect of Kaga's chronic inability to display emotions, but, yes. :)

So who has the handgun that shoots through schools?

When in Danger, or in Doubt.
Run in circles, scream and shout.

They're naval warships.

The only answer is "all of them".

Except the one that got deported to Italy and wasn't even from there.
