Not to propogate an already out-of-place thread, but there was a Batman Beyond episode on this topic - titled, appropriately enough, "The Last Resort." Of course, the installation shown there was a completely over-the-top reinterpretation of everything in this article, where "lying on your face" became "Iso", a soul-crushing sensory deprivation tank. And, to pile on the irony, they threw in a parting lament that such "behavior modification" camps really are needed. There's little penitence to be found in a conventional penitentiary, you know. - Lord Ilmartello! "Ya gotta nip it in the bud, Andy!" |

> If you're gonna bother spending money then why >don't ya just send 'em into a military academy? They'd probably turn >out better and wind up serving the country too, dammit! > >-NeoRaven The article quoted one guy saying that his kid had already been kicked out of military academy. Not that I'm condoning these people, but I can sympathize a little bit with a parent who feels that they really have tried everything else. It's a tough call for me-- the physical, emotional and mental punishment of juvie vs. the physical, emotional and mental punishment of this place. I think what tips it in favor of normal jail for me is that 1) the kids aren't informed that they'll be sent to this place, they're just picked up in the middle of the night and shipped off without explanation, and 2) unlike juvenile hall there's no set term. I'm also a little surprised (and disturbed) that it is apparently perfectly legal for a parent to sign over "custody rights" to a random stranger. I never knew that was possible. -- Dan Brandon |
