Never before have I had such a strong urge to apply Eyrie logic in our own world.

As a Nethack player, I find your respect for Surtur amusing.

That's... interesting, I suppose, but what has it got to do with anything here?

Not to propogate an already out-of-place thread, but there was a Batman Beyond episode on this topic - titled, appropriately enough, "The Last Resort." Of course, the installation shown there was a completely over-the-top reinterpretation of everything in this article, where "lying on your face" became "Iso", a soul-crushing sensory deprivation tank.

And, to pile on the irony, they threw in a parting lament that such "behavior modification" camps really are needed. There's little penitence to be found in a conventional penitentiary, you know.

I finally got around to reading that artical and I must say that I am disturbed. Even more disturbing to me is the fact it is actually overseen by an oranization, called WWASP, that is devoted to this kind of rather extreme action. I did a couple fo Google searches on WWASP (including a couple crossreferencing the LDS (Latter Day Saint/Mormon) Church because both are based in Utah; no bones there) and found that most of the stuff I found was quite negative in nature.
A further thought that disturbs me is the fact that only wealthy families would be able to send their children off to a schools such as these. Parents who would go to lengths such as these strike me as A) incredible ignorant or B) severe anal-retentive control freaks. For God's mercy, people! If you're gonna bother spending money then why don't ya just send 'em into a military academy? They'd probably turn out better and wind up serving the country too, dammit!

I'd rather be sent into a military academy than Tranquility Bay. I might actually learn something a bit more useful rather than what I'd learn in my normal studies!

The article quoted one guy saying that his kid had already been kicked out of military academy. Not that I'm condoning these people, but I can sympathize a little bit with a parent who feels that they really have tried everything else.

It's a tough call for me-- the physical, emotional and mental punishment of juvie vs. the physical, emotional and mental punishment of this place. I think what tips it in favor of normal jail for me is that 1) the kids aren't informed that they'll be sent to this place, they're just picked up in the middle of the night and shipped off without explanation, and 2) unlike juvenile hall there's no set term.

I'm also a little surprised (and disturbed) that it is apparently perfectly legal for a parent to sign over "custody rights" to a random stranger. I never knew that was possible.
