"Spy X Family"

I listen to YouTube videos at work, which is how I heard of this.

Let's start with Loid Forger. He lives in Berlint, Ostania, remarried about a year ago, and has a daughter from a previous marriage. Well, that's what the paperwork says. Actually, he married Yor Briar in between the second episode and third episode, because he needs a wife to get his daughter into Eden College, and she's heard that Ostania's secret police are looking rather suspiciously at unmarried women above a certain age.

Except that he's lying to Yor; Loid Forger is actually a cover identity for Westalis's top agent, a master of disguise under the codename of Twilight. He's trying to find out why an Ostanian official is pushing for a war between their countries, and the only path they have is through this official's second son, who attends Eden College.

Yor Briar works at the Berlint city hall, and her younger brother Yuri will tell you that she worked herself bloody to get him through school. Although that's a bit of a lie that she tells him; as Thorn Princess, she's one of Ostania's assassins, specializing in traitors to the country. So she did work herself bloody - it just wasn't her blood.

Anya Forger, of course, isn't actually Loid's daughter. He adopted her as part of the plan. She's not too bright, because of living most of her life in Ostania's orphanage system. However, she does have one advantage. She's a receptive telepath, albeit one with no brakes.

And so, you have the Forger family, a family where the only person who knows what's really happening is keeping quiet about it because she watches too much Bondman.

It's sweet, occasionally chaotic, comedy gold. And watching Anya when her face goes "BWAH?" is always worth it.

I was leaning towards buying a Crunchyroll subscription anyway, this just sealed the deal.

Yor is a charming, surprisingly gullible woman who manages to make the combination of "looks that good" and "still single" believable. Also, she's the cheapest drunk ever, appears to be a lethal chef, and has a severe case of "only tool is a hammer" syndrome. ("Problem: Anya was not accepted to Eden College, but is on the top of the backup list. Solution: Murder?")

And she loves Anya. For that, I'd forgive a multitude of sins.

Oh, I wasn't even slightly confused about who Yor was. She was taking up a considerable amount of my brain. This is because she is very wholesome. And for no other reasons. Certainly not the introduction to her, ahem, side gig.

The animation was very fluid and the fight scene was beautifully choreographed. So was the incident involving the charging cattle. Which I watched for the. The animation. And not the. Not Yor. Not Yor's thighs.

i need a lie down.

My Current thinking is Anya about 4 and 1/3 years old, which if the people who made her an orphan ever come looking being 2 years too old is a smart cover worthy of Bondman

There's been a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it scenes in the anime which lead me to suspect that Anya is an escapee from an Ostanian genetics program. I could be wrong, of course.

I'd guess it was because there are no file type extensions in the URLs. DCF is pretty dimwitted--it has to be tricked into NOT showing an image inline if there's a filename extension it recognizes at the end, but it also doesn't know enough to show images that are on another page (as opposed to just being called directly).

I read most of the manga before it sort of devolved into the Anna & her pet doggie show. Gag manga really aren't my thing. Mission: Yozakua Family, a slightly different spin on the "spy subculture" genre, is more my speed (and I'm a bit salty that SxF got an anime first.)

Indeed, I could see the Yozakuras show up in UF....

I recently watched all that’s out in a fit of boredom (the same one that resulted in my Evangelion rewatch) and I’m loving the heck out of it.

I honestly can’t tell if Yor is that sheltered - somehow - or if she’s barely smarter than Anya.

We’ve only known him for two episodes, and Bond is already shaping up to be the smartest character in the show, including the super spies,

Anya really is the most realistic six year old~ can’t say I’m a fan of Damian’s lackeys tho.

*Man* Yor’s fellow office ladies are a catty bunch.

My guess is that between growing up there and the training to make her into Thorn Princess, she's been so steeped in Ostanian propaganda for her entire life that her only option was to develop a mindset of almost impenetrable gullibility. Barring strong evidence to the contrary, she'll believe anything she's told as if her life depends on it.

I suspect that if UF's Boba Fett met Yor, he'd class her as, "...one of those psychically scarred former child soldiers from some third-galaxy hellhole on the Rim." She's been trained enough to put up a good front, but that only goes so far.

To be fair, I think everyone in that world is a bit prone to holding the idiot ball. I mean, Loid the superspy didn't even question why his office worker faux wife was inches away from kicking his ass while she was screamingly drunk.

I mean, to be Westalis's greatest spy, he only has to be smarter than everyone in Ostania, which doesn't seem like a tremendously high bar.

I mean, yeah, but also Loid is just not given to thinking about it that deeply because this is All His Plan Tee Em. Yor being blackout drunk and having killer martial arts moves? Drunk flailing and beginner's luck. Yor being strong enough to stop a charging bull while her thigh muscles burst out of her leggings? My man appreciates a strong woman without assuming she's a professional assassin for a foreign government. Loid's a liar by trade, and that includes lying to himself.

Also, someone mentioned that Ostania is East Germany and... no? This is clearly pre-WW2 Third Reich inspired. Look at Donovan Desmond again, and look at the designs of the not-Gestapo uniforms. Not germane (ha) to the discussion but it was on my mind and this seemed as good a place as any to drop it in.

The clothing is designed on that line, but the politics appears to draw more from the Cold War era. Also, take a look at the van Loid and Franky are driving in episode 2. As far as I can tell, that's a VW microbus with the logos removed for purposes of not getting Volkswagen annoyed. I'm pretty sure I've seen a Trabant analog more than once.

It's something of a mishmash of eras.
