"Bocchi the Rock!"

(Themes: Cute girls, rock music in a livehouse, and weapons-grade introversion.)

Hitori Gotoh is an introvert of the highest order. In middle school, she decides to pick up the guitar, under the belief that if she's amazing enough a guitarist, she'll be able to join a band and conquer her introversion.

So. Very. Wrong.

She does become a good solo guitarist, recording covers of pop songs under the name "GuitarHero" and posting them to the internet. (As far as I can tell, she aims the camera to cover from collarbone to strumming fingers.) But she's still not any closer to getting out there.

Then comes the social cannonball known as Nijika Ijichi, drummer in Kessoku Band (apparently that translates as "zip tie.") By the end of the night, she knows that being in a band is a far cry from being a solo guitarist, she's been nicknamed "Bocchi" (loner), and her world's started to change.

This is nowhere near as happy as K-On! is*, but my impression so far (seven episodes) is that while there's going to be fun moments, the main arc is Bocchi-chan's growth. And for that to happen, things have to suck a little every so often.

One of the strange side effects of browsing Danbooru on the regular is that I often find out about things that have just come out by seeing fan art about them as it starts appearing. Often these are things I'm not all that interested in, like new .jp mobile games or whatever, but now and then I'll notice something that intrigues me enough to go investigate. I hadn't quite hit that threshold with this one yet, but I had started to notice it and wonder about its resemblance to K-On.

(As a tangential aside, there are a lot of series out there that are basically "K-On but with some other activity." I'm starting to think it's an actual genre, like "roguelike" games, or that spate of games that have started appearing recently that are all updates of Robotron 2084 with a deck-builder mechanism thrown on. :)

Partly because of this phenomenon and partly just at random, I've been watching and/or reading a few new-to-me things over the last few weeks, which I might make my own posts about at some point. I'm always at least a little wary about doing this, because there's always the terrible risk that I'll end up with another project and I already have way, way, way too many projects, but lately I seem to be in the mood to roll those dice. Could be time to add this one to the queue once I've finished one of the others off...

“K-On But Some Other Activity” is a well treaded genre at this point.

It’s a type of anime called Iyashikei or Healing Effect, one that’s designed with low or no stakes, just comfiness and good vibes. Usually heavy on the pleasing scenery shots, introspection, and cooking or some other leisure activity. It’s pure relaxation after a stressful day/week/life.

It tends to overlap a lot with Cute Girls Doing Cute Things, but that can sometimes have some impressive stakes - you’ve seen Girls Und Panzer. :3

Other shows like it are DIY (I presume), Flying Witch, Encouragement of Climb, Amanchu, Super Cub, Laid-Back Camp, arguably Sweetness and Lightning, and Yokohama Shopping Log, off the top of my head.

(Incidentally, it kinda feels like you’d enjoy Super Cub.)

Does the title refer to a small airplane or a small motorcycle? The latter seems more likely, but you never know. :)

The small motorcycle, yes. :3

Basically, this lonely, bored, orphaned high school girl decides to do *something* to be interesting and have something to talk about to her schoolmates, and sees somebody on a small motorbike - since she hates riding her bike up the hills to school anyway, this works out well for her. I’m explaining it poorly, but that’s the basic gist of it, as I recall it~ it’s been a little while.

Edit: Also, point of order, isn’t the plane a *Piper* Cub? Or is that something else?

"Remove", lower left, if that appears for non-admin users (which it seems like it should, on their own posts, but maybe not).

Huh, all these years and I've never noticed that. I could see it being useful for debugging or Detecting Shenanigans, but it's odd that it was on for all users by default.

Ah well, the past is a foreign country... they do things differently there.

Anyway, I could remove the original mispost, but we've got this subthread now. :)

The Super Cub is the longest-produced and most numerous variant in the Taylor/Piper Cub lineage--same basic airframe as the original, but with mod cons like flaps and a proper electrical system. Piper made them for 40 years, so there are a helluva lot of them out there, with every conceivable hobbyist mod. Not unlike the motorcycle, come to think of it. Similar user cultures. :)

Oh yeah, also, I once knew someone who made a similar mistake, only it was taking up the bass guitar in the belief that it would be safe because no one notices the bass player. (I think I might have mentioned this in a TFLF annotation, because it's more or less Mio's arc in K-On, complete with the part about being totally wrong about that. :)

Back to the original topic I'm watching Boochi right now, and while I am liking what I'm seeing so far, I feel the need to complain a out something that's been a pet peeve of mine for many years now.

The idea that inside every introvert is somebody who just wants to be an extrovert. It's especially prominent in anime, and there's definitely cultural components of it, but it's long been a thing in western media, too.

Not every introvert is a lonely shut in. Not every introvert just wants to have dozens of friends but can't make that first step. And not every introvert just needs that one person to make the effort to talk to them to make them evolve into a social butterfly.

In fact, I'd say very few Introverts are any of those things. That seems more the realm of social anxiety, to me. But extroverts ate the ones who write this sort of thing I guess, and to them everybody just needs to be badgered into becoming one or else their lives are boring and empty, right? Gotta cure those introverts! It's for their own good!

This won't really affect my enjoyment of the show any, it's just something thats always in the back of my mind when a story about a quiet kid without friends appears, and I needed to vent a little.

Edit to add: Watching a little bit more of Bocchi, it looks like she's much less an introvert than she has *extreme* social anxiety, which is so much less annoying to me, and a very good sign for things. I have also noticed that 'Introversion is a disease to be cured' is becoming less of a *thing* in general, which is very good. Sorry for any derailment of anything!

This kind of reminds me of the title character of Komi Can't Communicate, who does in fact want all of those things, but who (at least as far as I've gotten into the series so far) is somehow managing to do them without evolving into a social butterfly, largely because she is completely surrounded by lunatics who are so wrapped up in misinterpreting everything she does in the best ways that it would be completely superfluous for her to actually speak to them. :)

Bocchi here seems like if you combined Komi with Najimi. Or trapped him in Komi's soul. She *desperately* wants to be one of the In Crowd, but is completely incapable of it to the point of complete (comedic) nervous breakdown if she has to initiate contact.

Komi is so very much more subdued and kinda just wants some friends and to come out of her shell a bit. Or at least in comparison. As I recall, at least, it's been a good minute since I've read any of that.

Incidentally, in a similar vein is Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (Aharen is Indecipherable), which has the title character be painfully shy and also....strange. It's kinda like a much more comedic take on Komi-san, if Komi were four and a half feet of tightly controlled chaos and Tadano was a six foot straight man with Resting Yakuza Glare who's just as filled with chaos as he tries to figure out what Aharen's got going on *today*. Has a manga and an anime. Much like Komi, Aharen is nearly nonverbal, and both have their male classmate-slash-love-interest trying to figure out what's going on in their heads. ....Aharen has both much more and much less going on in hers than Komi, it seems. :3

I have caught up! And man, Bocchi is painfully relatable but also even more extreme :) girl needs to chill the heck out or her heart is going to explode.

My father's back on his feet after, appropriately enough, foot surgery he had this fall. He stopped by today for the first time in months to have lunch and then spend the afternoon puttering around the house. He just left, and now I am feeling extremely kindred to Bocchi when the drummer asks her to hang out at the end of episode 1. "Actually, I'm exhausted from all this social interaction."
