"Comedic anime recommendations"

Okay, this one's pretty basic, it's the shows that are more funny than anything else, so while there's gonna be some of everything else in here, they're comedies first and foremost. As this list grows I realize I watch a lot of these...

Chio's School Road
The story features a simple premise—high school girl Chio Miyamo walking from her house to her school. What happens between these two points, however, varies from day to day, ranging from strange conversations with her friend Manana Nonomura, dealing with biker gangs, and performing death-defying feats of parkour.

--Chio is a dyed in the wool gamer, and also pretty deep in the 'delusional' age with some poor impulse control. She's steadfastly determined to not stand out despite some highly impressive physical skills, and that drive to be a background character is very strong. Her friends aren't much better off, including a popular track athlete with a not-so-hidden exhibitionist streak.

Sabagebu! (Survival Game Club)
Taking place at Aogiri Academy, the series follows a group of female high school students and their daily lives in a survival game club.

--(That's the best copy of the opening I can find) Wikipedia doesn't have much about the 'plot' if you call it that. This is pure comedy and over the top action. Don't worry, all the blood is imagined, and the guns are airsoft or paintball. :) Everybody in this show is completely insane. Also, there's a platypus.

Bakuon!!
The series takes place at Okanoue Girls' High School, where girls are permitted to ride motorcycles to school, and follows Hane Sakura, a cheerful freshman who becomes awed after seeing another student ride a bike to school. Taking an interest, Hane joins her school's motorcycle club and gets a motorcycle license. After buying her own bike, Hane begins her exciting, two-wheeled, motorized high-school life along her new friends; Onsa Amano, Rin Suzunoki, Raimu Kawazaki and Hijiri Minowa.

--Sakura is basically Hirasawa Yui if she bought her eyebrows where Tsumugi shops. The show makes fun of motorcyclists while also being a clear love letter to them and their bikes. Raimu is best girl.

Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (Aharen-san is Indecipherable)
In his first year of high school, making friends is not so easy for Raido Matsuboshi. One day in class, Raido tries to talk to his classmate next to him and thinks she is ignoring him, but later realizes she was shunned by her previous classmates for being clingy, awkward, and timid. Raido decides to help said classmate, Reina Aharen, to come out of her shell and befriend her for whatever it takes, and in turn coming out of his own rather odd shell.

-- Raido is somewhat enormous (especially compared to the practically microscopic Aharen - Seriously, he's either over six feet tall or she's under three) and has a minor case of Resting Murder Face. Aharen is an inexplicably prodigy but can't figure out how close to get to people - physically or otherwise - to save her life, and when she speaks at all, speaks so softly as to be nearly inaudible even right next to her. I elsewhere described this as similar to Komi-san Can't Communicate, but on watching it again, that resemblance is superficial at best.

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!
Following an untimely and embarrassing death, Kazuma Sato, a Japanese teenage shut-in NEET, meets a goddess named Aqua, who offers to reincarnate him in a parallel world with MMORPG elements, where he can go on adventures and battle monsters. Despite being offered a superpowered item or ability to use in this new world, Kazuma, following some provocation, chooses Aqua herself to accompany him to the town of Axel, quickly finding her absent-mindedness to be less than beneficial. With Aqua unable to return to the afterlife until the Devil King is defeated, the two form a party and recruit two other members; an explosion-obsessed magician named Megumin and a masochistic crusader named Darkness. Due to the party's dysfunctional abilities, Kazuma quickly gives up on the idea of defeating the Devil King and tries to live a comfortable lifestyle, only to find the circumstances of his daily life are forcing him and his party to encounter and battle the Devil King's generals.

--(Opening is from season 2 simply because I like it better) This is hands down one of the funniest shows I have ever seen, and it's like 98% because the characters are all SO well written, with each and every one of them being the best worst everything. They're all terrible people in various ways but not in the way of being sociopaths, just...terrible at what they are. From Aqua, whos intelligence and luck stats are in the single digits, to Megumin, who can cast the incredibly powerful Explosion spell...and ONLY cast the Explosion spell, because she thinks all the others are a waste of time...once, before she's out of MP and can't move...to Darkness, who's severely hampered in her role as a party tank by her need to be beaten, captured, and humiliated, to Kazama's general maladjustment, everybody is stupid, everybody is crazy in their own special way, and it all meshes so *incredibly* well.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
As office worker and programmer Kobayashi gets ready for work, she is greeted by a large dragon right outside her front door. The dragon immediately transforms into a human girl in a maid outfit, and introduces herself as Tohru. It turns out, that during a drunken excursion into the mountains the night before, Kobayashi had encountered the dragon, who claimed to have come from another world. Subsequently, Kobayashi had removed a holy sword from Tohru's back, earning her gratitude. With Tohru having no place to stay, Kobayashi offers to let the dragon stay at her home and become her personal maid, to which she agrees, having fallen in love with Kobayashi.

--A funny show with some surprisingly wholesome heart, amazing animation, and Lucoa's fashion sense. I do feel the need to warn about some risque content though concerning Kanna's friend and Lucoa's....and Lucoa.

Pop Team Epic

NULL

-- CHAOS.

Lucky Star
Lucky Star's story mainly portrays the lives of four girls attending a Japanese high school. The setting is mainly based on the city of Kasukabe in Saitama Prefecture. The main character is Konata Izumi, a lazy girl who constantly shirks her schoolwork and instead uses most of her time to watch anime, play video games, and read manga. Although she is lazy, she has also proven to be very intelligent and athletic.

--A classic, it's hard to talk too much about because it's such slice of life sketch comedy. Much like the next two on our list...

Nichijou My Ordinary Life
Nichijou follows the everyday lives of various people in the town of Tokisadame, centering on the energetic Yūko Aioi, the bright and cheerful Mio Naganohara, the quiet and deadpan Mai Minakami, the anxious android Nano Shinonome, her young creator the Professor, and a talking black cat named Sakamoto, along with an ensemble cast of characters. Random and/or outlandish events regularly occur throughout the series, mainly through the mundane situations each character goes through.

--I haven't watch a lot of this one, but since it's largely semi-absurdist slice-of-life sketch comedy I feel okay recommending it based on what I've seen.

Azumanga Daioh
Azumanga Daioh chronicles the everyday life in an unnamed Japanese high school of six girls and two of their teachers: child prodigy, Chiyo Mihama and her struggle to fit in with girls five years older; reserved Sakaki and her obsession with the cute animals while certain ones seem to hate her; spacey Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga with a skewed perspective on the world; Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara's aggravation at an annoying best friend; Tomo Takino, whose energy is rivaled only by her lack of sense; sporty Kagura and her one-sided athletics rivalry with Sakaki; their homeroom teacher Yukari Tanizaki; and her friend, physical education teacher Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa.

--An even more classic classic, there's not much I can say about this one.

Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san
Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san is based on a real life experience of the author Honda during her days as a bookstore employee. The story follows the life of the staff while explaining how a bookstore works.

--Not much to say beyond what the excerpt does, except that all of Honda-san's coworkers are anonymized via various head and face coverings.

Please Tell Me! Galko-chan
(Wikipedia has nothing about the plot of the series) This is a comedy about and staring high school girls just kind of answering questions from each other and talking about their bodies oddities. A Gal, a nerd, and a rich girl (Galko, Otako, and Ojou) trio of friends is the main characters, though several of their classmates join in the fun. Galko herself is a Gal in the mold of Marin from My Dress-up Darling, appearing to be a party girl but really just a warmhearted softie who's not nearly as worldly as she looks and acts (but doesn't claim to be).

Asobi Asobase
The series centers on Hanako Honda, Olivia and Kasumi Nomura, second-year students at an all-girls middle school and the only three members of the Pastimers Club, a not officially recognized club. The club has very ambiguous goals, usually consisting of whatever so-called "pastimes" the girls happen to think up.

-- CHAOS

And last up, we have a SPECIAL TOKUSATSU ENTRY!
Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger(Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger)
Three individuals (a Super Sentai otaku, a cosplay otaku, and a closet anime otaku) are chosen by a beautiful scientist otaku to become the "Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger" and "protect Akihabara" from powerful otaku villains that only exist in their delusions. However, the otaku fight eventually gets literally real when their "otaku enemies" begin to materialize in the real world.

--A loving parody-spoof of Super Sentai by Toei themselves, with copious references and even cameos.

Whew! That was a hefty one, and I still left a bunch on the cutting room floor.

Kobayashi is all that. I am no poet so any kind of description I could try to come up with would suck so I'll just go with 'you HAVE to watch it'. :)

To add to the list, I'll suggest The Devil is a Part-Timer. Haven't gotten all the way through it but the 9 or so episodes I've seen are a good watch. This one is over on hulu.

...and has two seasons on Crunchyroll, if, like me, you're already spending money there but not at Hulu.

That was one I cut to keep the post from ballooning to obscene lengths. Also I couldn’t Become The Hero So I Reluctantly Decided To Get A Job, Ninja Nonsense/Shinobuden, I cant Understand What My Husband Is Saying, Wagnaria, Tonari wa Seki-Kun: The Master Of Killing Time, Ramen Fighter Miki, Muromi-San on the Shore, - FRICK I knew I was forgetting a big one, EXCEL SAGA! Ah well, you should all have some idea of that one by now. :D - Squid Girl, Denki-Gai, Dragon Half, And Kumamiko.

I said I watch a lot of these :3 and that’s not listing the ones I think fit better in other categories!

This reminds me of a comic I saw making the rounds on twitter a while ago, in which a girl born with pink hair rages against the machine her obligatory main-character status, brusquely dismissing talking animals, wounded princes, and anything else that is an obvious first-episode hook. :)

Hahaha! I think I vaguely remember that one! But in this case it’s tied to Chio’s belief that she’s too plain and will end up as ‘the ugly one’ in the group, it would interfere with her gaming, and just generally be too exhausting to try to be a Normie, coupled with some minor self image/confidence issues, which, yknow, mood as hell.

My name is Mika Otohime. Unfortunately, I was born with pink hair.

I know one day, I'll have to accept my birthright.
