"Anime Recommendations: Stuff to watch for edition!"
|
Hey there! Been a while, but we're back, and THIS time, I'm going to be recommending stuff that I read as manga that's new this season and being turned into anime! There's a fair bit of that this season, last season, and in coming seasons, so let's get this party started, shall we? Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save The World In Labyrinth City the adventurer Nick is abruptly kicked from his team by his mentor Argus, followed by his girlfriend Claudine dumping him. Disillusioned Nick develops an otaku lifestyle around new teen idol Agate. To fund this lifestyle Nick must return to adventuring but fails to join a new team. By chance at an inn he shares a table with sorceress Tiana, ex-priest Zem and Dragon-girl Curran, all disillusioned over something. Tiana is a magical prodigy jilted by her fiancé jealous of her abilities. Abandoning her studies she became a gambling addict and failed to become an adventurer because her glaring eyes scare away potential teammates. Zem used to be a Healer Priest until he rejected the advances of a young village girl. Angered, she accused him of rape, leading to his expulsion from the priesthood. He decided to become an adventurer, but freed from his vow of chastity he has become a womaniser and a drunk. Curran merely explains someone she trusted stole something from her. The four drink together over their shared inability to trust people. Nick realises they will remain disillusioned unless they do something about it and suggests they form an adventuring team together. -- Four people broken and disheartened by people being horrible to them learning how to trust again. Isekai Ojisan(Uncle from Another World) In modern-day Japan, Takafumi Takaoka picks up his uncle who recently awakened from a 17-year coma after being hit by a truck. Uncle shows the ability to use magic spells, and explains that he was actually sent to another world. Takafumi lets his uncle move in with him, and he, joined by Takafumi's childhood friend Sumika Fujimiya, spends his days helping Uncle adjust to modern society while also watching his memories of the other world. --This one is from last season. This one leans more into what I'm going to call 'cringe comedy' than I usually like, but it has an extreme earnestness to it all that's just charming as all heck. What the wikipedia excerpt doesn't mention is that Uncle was an extreme Sega fanboy before he got Truck-kun'd, which is its own source of comedy~ There was some weirdness in production that halted it for a while and Netflix Canada at least still hasn't gotten the other half of the season up, but it exists somewhere. The Way of the Househusband Tatsu, an infamous and feared yakuza boss nicknamed "the Immortal Dragon", retires from crime to become a househusband so that he can support Miku, his kyariaūman wife. The episodic series depicts a variety of comedic scenarios, typically wherein Tatsu's banal domestic work as a househusband is juxtaposed against his intimidating personality and appearance, and his frequent run-ins with former yakuza associates and rivals. --This one is just hilarious, with everybody misinterpreting his words and actions, since he seems physically incapable of not using language that sounds like euphemisms for crime...in one direction or the other. Season 2 has already begun over on Netflix. Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World For My Retirement (No Wikipedia synopsis here, so here's mine) After being accidentally killed by God and resurrected with certain powers as an apology, a young japanese woman gains the ability to travel between the modern world and another, fantasy-based one at will, bringing other people and objects with her. She decides to use this (with God's full permission) to make enough money in gold pieces which she can sell, to never have to work again. It's mostly a light and fluffy series, at least the manga is, though there are, of course, some dark and violent moments. But she herself isn't that overpowered. It's the fact she has access to modern firearms and a mercenary company that make her overpowered. Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire In the Kingdom of Silvare lived the Hero-King Inglis. With the personal blessing of the goddess Alistia, Inglis became a divine knight, slaying the enemies of humanity and the dark gods to establish the Kingdom. As a last favor granted to him on his deathbed, the goddess Alistia reincarnated Inglis as his single greatest regret was not being able to reach the peak of mastering the blade. Now reborn as a woman (perhaps at the jesting whims of the goddess), Inglis Eucus strives to live a life in the far future where she can truly master the blade. --I admit it's been a bit since I've read this one, but I remember enjoying what I saw of it. Handyman Saitou in Another World (Again, no Wikipedia synopsis, so here's me) Saitou, a regular handyman, ignored, insulted, and just generally stepped on by people who think he's beneath them because he's just a simple repairman, gets summoned to a world of fantasy and magic, where his skills are appreciated by the party that accidentally summoned him in the first place. Mostly comedy in the manga. Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill (Again, no wikipedia synopsis) A salaryman gets summoned by accident along with a trio of three heroes. Since he was an accidental summoning and he didn't have the proper skills, he was essentially thrown away with little to no help or guidance. But it turns out that his skill is incredibly useful - he can buy things 'online' and have them delivered instantly from the modern world. He proceeds to wander the world largely ignored, along with the Fenrir that mutually adopted him because he made good food, with occasional chats with the various Gods of the world who all have a taste for modern luxuries that he can sacrifice to them. |

Season 2 has already begun over on Netflix. This feels like the rejected premise for one of the later Yakuza games. I mean, there are at least three of those in which Kiryū is trying to do something like that, but ends up getting dragged back into his life of crime. Someone has to have pitched an alternative at some point where he succeeds and it's a slice-of-life comedy game, only to be shouted down by the company brass. :) >Handyman Saitou in Another World >(Again, no Wikipedia synopsis, so here's me) Saitou, a regular >handyman, ignored, insulted, and just generally stepped on by people >who think he's beneath them because he's just a simple >repairman, gets summoned to a world of fantasy and magic, where his >skills are appreciated by the party that accidentally summoned him in >the first place. LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-23 AT 09:35 PM (EST) I'd like to throw in a recommendation for Mission Yozakura Family
Taiyo Asano is a super-shy high school student and the only person he can talk to is his childhood friend Mutsumi Yozakura. However, Mutsumi comes from a line of master spies with amazing powers. Her oldest brother, Kyoichiro, is obsessed with Mutsumi and out to kill anyone who gets remotely near her—and his next target is Taiyo! The only way for Taiyo to save himself from Kyoichiro’s murderous clutches is to marry Mutsumi! Pretty much my favorite current Weekly Shonen Jump title, it neatly balances humor, action, and romance with some wild world-building. It's also the longest-running WSJ title that doesn't have an anime already... Mario |

Shows I've started watching this season (sorta) KanColle: Itsuka Ano Umi de Technically started mid-way through last season, it's a short series of 8 episodes. Rather than following Fubuki, it has a new MC destroyer: Shigure, and unlike the previous genki energy there's a very melancholy tone as it's based around late war campaigns: the abyssals are winning, shipgirls are implied to have died and not infrequently wind up injured to the point that they're out of the war, with squadrons being shuffled and consolidated. There's a tone of resigned defiance, no one talks about winning - just staving off defeat. It's a very subdued feel, and Shigure is pretty clearly struggling with PTSD. I really enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is depressed. Lupin Zero Another one that started late last season, this takes Lupin III back to the 60s(I think), with him just starting out his adventures - he's a teenager, rebelling against his father's 'straight and narrow' views by embracing his grandfather's lessons in how to be a thief. He's still a bit of a letch and scoundrel, but also a bit more innocent. The series has a lot of energy and never seems to stop - even when the plot isn't moving ahead, Lupin and Jigen are teenage boys who never run out of energy to be doing something. Oniichan wa Oshimai! (I'm Now Your Sister!) A super-smart teenage girl decides to reform her depressed, shut-in older brother by.. turning him into her little sister. (Without his consent, if this wasn't a comedy it'd be pretty dark). There is a sense though that the sister really cares and is doing this because she thinks it'll help her brother. Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei (The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady) Reincarnated into a princess, Anne-sophia cannot use magic... so she invents a range of magical tools to let her do so. Trying out her flying broom, she crashes through a window, finding her brother breaking off his engagement to Euphilia on the basis of false charges that she's a bully. Anne-sophia concludes that if her brother doesn't want a pretty, clever and magically powerful girl then she does! And proceeds to yoink her. It's another show that's got a lot of energy - Anne-sophia is well intentioned but has approximately no moderation, to the frustration of her family. Euphilia, on the other hand, is quieter, more considerate and absolutely powerful enough to back Anne-sophia up when she gets in over her head. This does not mean that building a relationship between them will go smoothly though, of course. D. |

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-23 AT 03:36 PM (EST) I just started watching this today:Trigun Stampede Vash the Stampede’s a joyful gunslinging pacifist, so why does he have a $$6 million bounty on his head? That’s what’s puzzling rookie reporter Meryl Stryfe and her jaded veteran partner when looking into the vigilante only to find someone who hates blood. But their investigation turns out to uncover something heinous—his evil twin brother, Millions Knives. A reimagining of the classic anime/manga, with a more modern flair. Vash himself is still a complete goofball, however. Mario |

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-23 AT 11:27 PM (EST) >Huh! I didn't know it had an original manga. I should've guessed, of >course. Stuff that goes straight to animation without having a source >are pretty uncommon, even back then. Technically, it has two. Trigun was a shonen manga that was published in Monthly Shōnen Captain for 20 chapters. Trigun Maximum was a seinen manga that was published in Young King OURs for an additional 97 chapters. The anime... got as far as chapter 6 of Maximum (and a bit of chapter 12). This is why a lot of fans were hoping for a manga-faithful adaptation, since almost 90 chapters of material were never even touched. Trigun Stampede… isn't that. But it's fun. Mario |

>Handyman Saitou in Another World >...the party that accidentally summoned him...After watching the first episode, I have the mental image of Saitou getting a call on his cell phone requesting an on-site opening of a lock, agreeing, and getting zapped into Generic Fantasy World, because Morlock screwed up the incantation to contact a rogue. LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-23 AT 01:57 PM (EST) Most of this looks good. Stuff I decided to watch that isn't on here includes:Chillin' in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army Dariel has spent his entire life as a soldier in the Demon King's Army, but the General he served under has retired. The new General has decided that since magic is the only thing differentiating demons from humans, nobody without at least a basic level of magic will remain in the DKA. Dariel has never been able to cast even the most basic spells, so he's out. After packing his things, he wanders off, saves a human girl named Malika from a monster because it seems like the thing to do, and becomes the second local adventurer for Lux Village. I'm not sure how relaxed his life will be, since they establish him as an overpowered protagonist in the first episode, but that's anime life. EDIT: There's also a line in the first episode which suggests that Dariel either knows Something Important, or did Something Important, and shouldn't have been fired. In my head, Dariel was the network admin, and without him, the Demon King's E-mail Server will crash. The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Amane is an ISO-9000 High School Protagonist: Average Nobody. He's aware of Mahiru, the most beautiful girl in school, but in typical Average Nobody fashion, assumes that she couldn't possibly care about him, even if she is in the apartment next door. Then, one rainy day, he impulsively hands her his umbrella. She returns it, nurses him through the cold he picked up, and proceeds to treat him like a person who needs a friend, a balanced diet, and some better habits. None of this is with romantic intentions, of course, and they both say so. I give it eight or nine episodes at most before one of them realizes they're going to have to eat those words. Actually saying it out loud? No bets. This is no My Dress-Up Darling, where you have actual characters falling in love, but sometimes I'm not feeling picky. Tomo-Chan is a Girl! Tomo is a tomboy. Her father's been teaching her karate since she could stand up straight, she doesn't talk like a girl, she doesn't do anything girly with her hair, et cetera. So when she tries to confess her love to friend-since-childhood Junichiro, he completely misses the message. It's unclear why - he knows she's a girl, but somehow "I love you" bounces off his thick skull, and all he gets is "We're best buds." (Maybe it's the concussions. Tomo hits him a lot.) The first episode makes it clear that misinterpretation is not going to be in short supply, in order to play for as much comedy as possible. Peter Eng -- Insert humorous comment here. |

So, after the first episode of Saving 80,000 Gold, either the manga changed a BUNCH, or I just *completely* forgot how it started, and without reading it again, either one is likely, because my memory is absolutely terrible. From the look of the opening, it'll line back up soon enough, either way. Just be aware that my writeup there wasn't entirely accurate. :) |

Late addition time! The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Himuro is descended from a yuki-onna - a snow woman - which leaves him vulnerable to melting, and also prone to snow generation when his emotions run high. If he's unhappy, he'll form a snow hut around himself; he literally freezes when he's nervous; cold winds and snow blow in when he's enthusiastic; and miniature snowmen pop up when he's happy. To make this worse, his co-worker Fuyutsuki is attractive, thoughtful, and calm under pressure, which pushes all his buttons. It's going to be a cool time in the office for everybody.
