"Death to the digestive system, I say!"

My digestive system is, frankly, possessed by demonic entities hell-bent on the creation of bleeding, cancerous ulcers of Death, Doom, Destruction, and the Apocalyptic End (tm).

I wish to exorcise these beasties.

According to my sources, the application of extreme amounts of heat will accomplish this.

To that end, I have considered propane torches, plasma cutters, and the starting of a small fusion reaction in my stomach.

All of these methods require the introduction of non-edible things into my system, and the third, probably the only one that would work, requires expensive nuclear material. After giving the matter much thought, I came to realize that all of these methods pale before the simple application of a substance so incredibly hot, magma men from the planet Lahava break into a sweat at the mere mention of it.

I refer, of course, to -_ZONER CHILI_-

The cure, may in fact, be worse than the disease, but what's life without risk? Heh heh heh!

So, if it's not a family secret or anything, could you possibly help me out Megazone? ^___^ Don't worry, I'll sign the pre-consumption legal waiver. No death by burning life insurance policies will be honored B-)

Dear Goddess, no! Are you insane?

Risk is acceptable. Death is not. Detians have a hard time eating that stuff. Don't you remember what happened to Doc in Leap Years?

Actually, I have to wonder, is the dreaded Zoner Chili as bad as everyone's made it out to be. If so, I have to get some for my old man.

I figure if Redneck can survive Salusian Pelepeno laced Washuu Super-Digestive, I can manage Zoner Chili. I just wish I had some of those quote "noticeable" peppers for my attempt. Those or Peruvian Death Peppers. ^__^

Well, there isn't exactly a standard recipie or anything. I usually started out with one of the kits you can buy - 5-Alarm I believe, the ones with masa flour to thicken it I rather like. Usually they call for 1 or 2 pounds of beef. I usually used ground beef, but it is actually better with cube beef I think. Just more of a pain to make, and costs a bit more.

I'd make the recipie with max heat - then go from there.

I don't normally put beans in my chili, but I do like peppers. I usually would dice up some bell peppers - green, yellow, orange, red, etc (I liked the color). I'd also get some italian hot peppers if the store had them fresh and dice those up too.

A little more chili powder to make the flavor stronger. And sometimes I'd add some cayene pepper sauce (Red Hot brand IIRC) because it has a good flavor, and maybe a bit of Tabasco.

I used to buy a lot of pickled jalapenos, habanero pickled carrots, beans, etc, (basically a jar with brine and a habanero, or bits of one, and the vegetables packed in to absorb the heat. I LOVED "Baby Bunny Bullets" which were baby carrots picked with habanero, but I haven't been able to find them in years) to snack on. When you've eaten all those, you have some spicy brine left over - I'd save that up. Then when I made chili I'd leave out the salt and use this brine instead of water. Added some nice flavor, and some smooth heat.

All of that tended to make a fairly powerful chili.

But sometimes I'd go further - a friend of mine sent me a back of dried habaneros from New Mexico, and I'd use one or two in a pot. Since they were dried I'd crush them up fine, and mix them in. Whoa. THAT added some goddammed heat. Fresh habaneros work too, but not quite the same - the dried once mixed in and spread the flavor more I think, and it wasn't quite a sharp.

See *I* read it as "Don't use ground beef - use chunks of stew beef!" Mmm... Big, meaty, chunky chili. Like the meet he's been using in the Beef with Beer. (PS: The Guiness variety was quite tasty Gryph - I consumed the rest.)

Turkey chili is passable. Veggie chili just lacks something... like dead flesh.

Yum. I don't recognize the hominy (I've probably had it and just didn't know the name) but the rest looks fine to me.

To quote www.m-w.com

"hom·i·ny: kernels of corn that have been soaked in a caustic solution (as of lye) and then washed to remove the hulls"

The only reason I really post this is because I'm almost positive that if you then grind those up, you have grits. But, even though I'm from the South, the true source of grits eluded me for years, even though I've slowly learned to eat them in that time. I was always wary of them as a child because my breakfast-time queries of "What is a grit?" would only be met with much adult laughter and no real answers--frustrating to say the least to my five year old mind. And they wonder why I never tried them.

Mmmm. Hominy. Haven't had it in years. Maybe I'll get some on the way home. (I may have grown up in New England, but I was born in the South. I also like pickled okra, for the record.)

Okay, enlighten me, o Wedgie one. I used to know what grits are, but I have forgotten. (Like I said, I grew up in New England, where the most they know about grits is that they were a plot point in "My Cousin Vinny".)

Pickled? Haven't ever done that. Now fried okra kicks ass, and it's good in stews as well.

Roughly ground dried hominy cooked somewhat like rice. My father likes them with cheese and about the consistancy of wet spackle. (the comparison intensifies if they are allowed to dry on a plate :)

Fried okra is good. Never had it in a stew.

I can get pickled okra in the grocery store here, without much of a problem. Yes, in the godless Northeast, pickled okra is available.

As for what it's like? Someone I used to know, after eating one, pronounced that "they're hairy, and they taste like feet."

I didn't ask him where he learned what feet taste like. I sincerely hope to Goddess that his girlfriend's feet never resembled pickled okra in either scent or flavor.

Doesn't sound too bad. I'll have to see if I can find some that won't conflict with my vegetarian metabolism after I move to Greensboro. (In the South, cooking something in chicken fat, as opposed to pork fat, is "diet".)

Blasphemer. :)

Seeing as, in essance, it's just corn, I don't see how you'd have much issue with it, especially since the only part of corn that really gives anyone digestive trouble (the husks) are removed in the process.

Personally, I have nothing but respect for vegitarians and vegans and the personal choice they have made (assuming they aren't militant about it, which most of the vegans I know aren't...either way they have to deal with my buck mount, so...), but being a vegitarian and living in the south seems like a cruel joke to me. Just the thought of sausage gravey and biscuits sends me into Pavlovian fits... :)

And here I was laboring under the impression that vegans were just "vegetarians, only more annoying."

Elder Days Story Time: Back when I was at WPI, there was this girl who had a number of irritating traits, primary among which was the fact that she was an evil, manipulative tramp. That's kind of by the way for this particular anecdote, though, since I was about the only guy I knew who she didn't zero in on at some point that school year. Among the reasons for that might have been the fact that she was also an extremely obnoxious vegetarian, and happened upon me doing something beef-related... I forget what. I'd like to say I was cooking a hamburger, except that it was impossible to cook in any of the places where we might have encountered each other that year. So I suppose I was just eating one. Anyway, she got on my case about it, which made me quite annoyed, until finally we had the following exchange:

SHE (after a detailed description of slaughterhouse conditions and the Terrible Suffering of Food Animals): I mean, how can you do that? How can you contribute to a system like that?

ME: Well, you see... I'm perfectly fine with all that. And do you know why? Because cows piss me off. The thought of a cow standing cold and alone in a stinking darkness, staring stupidly into the gloom, waiting for the hammer to fall, to be carved up and packaged and fried for the express purpose of making me fat... ohhhh, it keeps me warm at night.

SHE: You're the most revolting person I've ever met. Never speak to me again.

ME (internally): Oh, oh no. My heart, she is broken.

And, indeed, so far as I can recall, she never did speak to me again.

>Rabbit: "God, Meg, you've got a lot of beef. Where'd you get all

I'm quite fond of that film. I saw it maybe half a dozen times, mainly because it had just come out when I moved to California and I had very little else to do. It's not high drama, but I like many of the characters, and the interactions within the gang of storm chasers really tickled me. Plus I had this thing for Helen Hunt. :)

Yeah, most of us only get bitchy about it when something happens like McDonald's finally admitting that they've been putting beef fat in their fries for years, and saying it was "vegetarian", and not even apologizing for it. Taco Bell pulled something similar with putting lard in their allegedly vegetarian beans. But there are militant vegetarians, and they annoy me, a practicing vegetarian (though not vegan... I'll probably go vegan eventually, but not yet). They've got to be twice as annoying to those who do eat meat.

And, no, I wouldn't expect grits to interfere with a vegetarian metabolism, but you never know what someone might put in them.

>And here I was laboring under the impression that vegans were just
>"vegetarians, only more annoying."

Like I said, most vegetarians -- that I've met, anyway -- aren't militant about it. It's usually only the ones who have been recent converts. And while I had a multitude of reasons for going vegetarian (and most of them still apply), even if all my issues were resolved I couldn't go back to eating meat. At this point, I find the idea repulsive. To me, meat in a shrinkwrap is just about as appetizing as three-day-old roadkill.

(For the curious, I don't have a problem with eating meat in and of itself. My problems are with the attitudes and methodology inherent in the way meat eating is practiced, most especially in the Western world. It's tied into my spirituality, which is *not* something I'm going to get into here.)

>SHE (after a detailed description of slaughterhouse conditions and the
>Terrible Suffering of Food Animals): I mean, how can you do
>that? How can you contribute to a system like that?

>ME: Well, you see... I'm perfectly fine with all that.

Heh. I haven't done this recently, but whenever I wanted to annoy a meat-eater, I'd ask them how they were enjoying their carcass/corpse/rotting flesh/etc. (There's a surprising number of people who don't like being reminded of what they're eating. And I know many, many people who would give up eating meat if continuing the practice meant having to slaughter the animal themselves.) I grossed at least one girl out of eating meat for about a week back in college. (I think it also had to do with my detailed explanation of such delicacies as Rocky Mountain oysters and haggis.)

(Then, of course, the looniest thing I ever heard was on seaQuest DSV, when it was a minor plot point that eating beef was illegal, because of ozone layer depletion caused by cattle flatulence.)

If eating in general meant having to slaughter/cultivate/whatever my own food myself, then I'd probably starve simply for lack of ability, let alone gumption. (See also: The Trigger Effect, episode one of James Burke's immortal Connections.)

They're not muscle tissue. But they are dead animal parts. Which, as far as I'm concerned, amounts to the same thing. (I don't eat anything that even has broth from an animal in it. It's still from a dead animal.)

Philosophically, perhaps; but culinarily, they're as different as a chocolate milkshake and a block of stinking, mold-encrusted French cheese. Me, I'm a dedicated flesh-consumer from 'way back, but I'm firmly of the opinion that one should just say 'no' to organs, with the cognitive-dissonance-enabled exception of intestines, without which there can be no sausage. :)

But what of my giblet gravey at Thanksgiving? I can't give that up. And I'm also fond of fried chicken gizzards, though there aren't many chicken places left that serve them. Certainly not going to find those at my friendly neighborhood Koo Koo Roo...

For a lot of people poultry != meat != fish. *shrug* Yes, I think they are all forms of meat, but a lot of people distinguish between them - even religions. Can't eat meat on friday? That's why you eat fish - it isn't meat. I think people are just malinformed so they equate vegetarianism with not eating meat - but to them that means red and white meats (like beef and pork).

Oh, that's been tried on me - don't work. In college we used to order burgers as "charbroiled dead cow flesh on a bun" and such.

Or, joining a friend for dinner, we might ask "So, how's the flesh tonight?"

   >I also love the "You know, that's going to kill you." "Probably.
>*bite*"

I've never really gotten why people use a "that's going to kill you" argument against ANYTHING. No matter what the transhumanists want, everybody is going to kakk it sooner or later, so telling me that something is probably going to kill me doesn't really do me much good.

Note that I don't eat meat, smoke, or drink. Meat I've already mentioned. Smoke? Sorry, I've seen what 40 years of cigarettes has done to my father. I'll pass. (And, on that topic, while I understand that back in the day the tobacco companies were mum on the nasty shit cigarette smoke does to your body and the addictiveness of nicotine, thus excusing most middle-aged and older smokers -- and let me tell you, smoking is almost impossible to quit when you've been at it for 20 to 30 years (almost, but not quite impossible) -- why the f*ck would any thinking being want to START? Quitting is almost impossible. The benefits are negligible ("It relaxes me." "It gives me something to do with my hands." "Yes, it also costs you $3+ a pack, will give you a particularly un-fun form of cancer for some time before you finally kick the bucket, makes you stink, and once that physical nicotine addiction sets in -- which usually only takes a couple of cigarettes -- you can pretty much forget quitting."), the costs tremendous, and it's growing more difficult to actually pursue on a daily basis. Drinking? Nothing wrong with it, unless, of course, you're alcoholic, as I'm quite likely to become in my current emotional state. (I used to drink occasionally, but I haven't had a drop since my mother's
funeral.)

In other words, "That'll kill you" only carries some weight if it's going to make you die rather than suffer what happens before you die. Heart attack? I'm not saying I have a death wish (well, not much of one right now, anyway), but if I'm gonna go, some numbness in my arm followed by some difficulty breathing and then that's all she wrote... well, that don't sound to bad. I'd rather die of a heart attack than a prolonged bout with cancer.

I know some true vegans who are really cool about it, it's their thing and they never try to impose their views on anyone, which is the way it should be, IMHO. I also have a 'dead flesh' vegitarian friend (meaning she doesn't eat meat because she doesn't like the thought of killing animals, but she has no vegan issues with eating things made by animals) who holds respect for my flesh eating ways because of the fact that I've hunted and actually seen and participated in the process of slaughtering an animal for food, as opposed to the many people who just see it as a shrink-wrapped product on a grocery shelf. She doesn't approve, but she at least considers me 'aware' of what I'm doing.

I usually respond to something like that with the Dennis Leary (I think) line, "If hooking up a monkey's testicles to a car battery is going to find a cure for cancer or AIDS, I've got two things to say: Red is positive and black is negative." That usually scares away most of them who don't have a sense of humor...

<old movie theater story>
We had Twister at the theater I worked at, and I was head projectionist at the time. This is interesting for two reasons:

A) I got to see it twice before anyone else, because we got two prints of it, which I had to build up from the componant reels and then screen to make sure they didn't send us any screwed up reels. So I got to see it the first two times on a pristine print, each time, all by myself, in the two large DTS equipped houses, with no one else in there to deaden the sound and the volume set to my tolerence level. Damn that was fun.

B) Each print came with a letter signed by Jan de Bont himself stating that the film was mixed specifically for the calibration volume, and that we were catagorically not allowed to alter this volume setting while exhibiting his film. I made copies of the letters and posted them outside each theater, and for the first time in 10 months working there I got to tell people (in a nice way and with a smug smile) to piss up a rope when they came out and complained how loud it was. Justice has never been so sweet.
</old movie theater story>

>Plus I had this thing for Helen Hunt. :)

If I had a dollar for every time you ended a conversation about a film with "Plus I had/have this thing for x." I'd have...about two or three dollars by now. :)

ROFLMAO!! That's just too funny. I simply must remember that.

Personally, I have no problems with vegetartian types, as long as their motives are sound. If they do it cuz animals have feeeeeelings, I call 'em hypocrites and step off. If they do it cuz thet's what they like, or because it keeps them in shape, then that's cool enough. I just find it hard to swallow a person who won't kill an animal, yet will devour pounds of once-living plant. Is death not death?

Hey, I'm a red-blooded American boy...I love beef...and I love beer, and I spent just enough time in London to learn to enjoy really really good beer. This combination of the two peaks my interest. Would it be to much to ask for a posting of that recipie as well, please?

I knew something felt wrong when I was typing that...

The intoxication of sweet, sweet beef led me astray. Yeah, that's it...

Grr, I was going to send this, and then forgot to bring it to work with me. It's a variation on a recipe Juni found for me on the Web. I'll see if I can't remember to plug it in when I go home tonight. (I should write it up anyway, instead of remembering the changes I made each time.)

Hmm... there are several things I've started making lately. Maybe it actually is time to start the recipe section of the Lab & Grill.

Goes with the theme and all. :)

I would be more than happy to repay in the form of my friends Beercan Chicken recipe, which makes some of the most amazing grilled chicken I've ever tasted.

I would hurt someone for that grill. Although, since I live a mile and a half from the north runway at LAX, it'd probably screw with the takeoff pattern if I had one...

   >Turkey chili is passable. Veggie chili just lacks something... like

So? With Zoner Chili, you produce your own dead flesh. It took me two months to regrow my tongue back!

True story of my first experience with ZC. I was his roommate at the time, and a big pot was to be had by all. Several of us tried it, decided it was waaay too hot, and decided to "cut" it by using it as a spicy pasta sauce.

It didn't help. It was truly painful.

Amazingly, I never liked spicy food until Zoner chili. Immediately afterwards, I found myself unable to turn down spicy food. Few restaurants have food spicier than I like it. Go figure.

The deed has been done. I type these words possibly as my last act, as I am, in a cruel twist of digestive fate, being consumed from within by the Zoner Chili I have consumed.
It all began innocently enough... a pan of stew beef, a touch of oil, some garlic. Then, my insane desire to prove myself capable of withstanding Megazone HEAT (tm) kicked in, and I started adding ground cayenne pepper and the like, thus beginning the transformation of the mere beef chunks into SCREAMING BURNING CHUNKS OF DEAD FLESH. Once this was thoroughly browned, I threw it into a pot, added some tomatoes, onion, spices, the usual. Sense almost came back, but I happened to spy the peppers in the fridge.
Damn my eyes.
4 serranos, 6 jalapenos, and 2 banana peps later, plus a can of pintos cuz I do like beans in mine, the concoction was simmering neatly away.
My next of kin will, sadly, be forced to bill Zoner for the pot, as it is now hideously deformed and useless, but I get ahead of myself.
My cat, intrigued by the beefy emanations from the kitchen, ventured inside to sniff about. I hear the surgery to replace his lung lining went well.
Oh, but I wasn't done yet. Oh no. Crushed red pepper, half a bottle of Tabasco, and some Curry powder were next.
Finally, my personal crowning ingredient. 1/2 cup of juice from my old man's hand canned pickled hot peppers, a motley mix of bananas, chilis, and jalapenos. Great stuff. Sweet, smooth and -hot-.
At this point I let it cook. We prepared the table.
Finally, we ate.
The bowls weren't up to the task, and were quickly replaced by titanium constructs we had lying around, a gift of exotic metal dishware given by a looney aunt.
Oh the sweet suffering of those first few bites. Tongues immolated, teeth melting. Two gallons of milk, gone in seconds, as we searched for more liquid matter. Hardened by this harrowing experience, we continued, determined to show our Eyrie-ness.
And now, we pay. My sole act of defiance.... I taped a note to the pot, warning off the unsuspecting, with the words: "ZONER CHILI =NEVER EAT="
Fading fast........ send... Omega...II.... urrrrrrrghhhh.........hghsghgff

TRB

"Throw open the gates of Hell and loose the searing flame, for I have seen the worse!"

P.S.: All comedy aside, it turned out to be a rather tasty pot of chili, and rather hot. I pussed out and failed to insert Habaneros into the mix. All in all, I doubt it was -truly- up to Zoner specifications, but the whole experience was entertaining, to say the least B-) Also, I do have a submission for the recipe section, A Shrimp and Pasta dish that I've developed from a bland book recipe into a spicy and everlasting bowl of goodness that is equally tasty hot or cold. ^_^
