2. "In defense of DJ"

Since I myself never had the chance to post my original thoughts on NXE when I joined, feeling it would be too upfront, and I have started rereading them, I might as well note for the record that I really don't see DJ as a Mary Sue, at least not in the derogatory sense. I'm well aware that he fits much of the criteria, but he just doesn't match . . . I know plenty of people that have similar personalities to DJ, so his cheerful, forward personality doesn't surprise me in the least. I know people who are that good with guns, who have had the kind of training DJ has had, and often times, they're the ones who have DJ's personality too. So the occurence of these two traits in one person is nothing astonishing to me. Sure, the fact that he's achieved such peace at such a young age is a bit odd, but considering his heritage it does not surprise me in the least. When you're the son of Lara Croft, such things happen. And really, I find the bastard quite likable. Why would I hate a character that appeals to me? He's intelligent, he has a strong sense of right and wrong, he likes to read . . . these are all qualities I admire in those I count as friends. In short, DJ is perfectly believable to me. So while people have listed characteristics that make DJ a Mary Sue, I really couldn't care less, because if he's a Mary Sue, then I'm friends with a whole bunch of Mary Sues. And IIRC, one of the derogatory statements people often make about Mary Sues is that they don't exist. People like DJ do exist. So hah, to anyone who hates him for being likable. He IS a human being, after all. -Kit "Dost thou mock me?" "Of COURSE I'm mocking you." "How DARE thee!" "How dare I? How dare you, when you make it so criminally easy?" -possible exchange between medieval ruler and modern-day time traveler

I guess it just like describing your girlfriend to someone when your in a good mood, theyd be too perfect but then in a bad mood theyd sound like satans spawn. I spose the author wanted to show DJs good points before his bad. Plus, who would write a self insertion or 3rd character into evangelion without having Misato as a love interest. I mean look at her, purrr ;P |

And, hmm, fourteen plus three, she'd be seventeen -right now-. The idea of being 'Sempai'd' by Misato and Ritsuko is highly compelling. Blessed be. -n |

Thank you for being a respectable chap, Bob. Anyway . . . >I meant only in the first few chapters, by 2.1 he was very human and >believable its just his buildup was too perfect. That's just my point; even in the first chapters, he ddn't come across to me as perfect at all--I knew he had his flaws. That was obvious to me--every character does, even those who you think are so jaw-gratingly perfect. It's just I recognized that he was very good at covering them up, even to himself. So I never perceived him as a Mary Sue, I just perceived him as a damn good survivor. He wasn't willing to accept anything less than near-perfection from himself, and he was too determined to let his doubts get in the way, so he didn't let them get in his way, and thus, he was DJ. No pain to me, no dislike. You see what I mean? -Kit "Dost thou mock me?" "Of COURSE I'm mocking you." "How DARE thee!" "How dare I? How dare you, when you make it so criminally easy?" -possible exchange between medieval ruler and modern-day time traveler

While reading a part of NXE during a quiet stretch, someone else there, with only a little experience in fanfiction, asked what I was reading. When I said NXE, his response? "I heard that's just a really bad self-insert." My response? I said that was bullshit, and to actually read it before judging it. That's the thing I see the most when it comes to NXE, and a lot of other things as well of course. People that have never read it judging it on what they heard from someone else that probably never read it. That really bugs the hell out of me. Matrix Dragon, J. >>So hah, to anyone who hates him for being likable. He IS a >>human being, after all. *chuckle* no, he isn't.. which was just the icing on the cake for me 8 ) I whole-heartedly like NXE. The only dross on the gloss is the racing bits, and that's just because I don't follow those circuits. >insert due the marysu aspect, but that all vanishes very quickly and >your left thinking either the writer is a genius or a total nutball >(just like evangelion, wtf was anno smokin!?) He's definitely not a nutball. NXE makes much more sense than NGE, maybe because I was exposed to NXE first. But at the last disc of NGE I was definitely thinking "What the heck is going on??". And yet my coworkers think "it's just a fanfic, why would you prefer it to the oriGinal?". Hmm I have a suspicion that Gryphon's not going to like it when people start comparing G and X. >60's style mutons from outerspace, i dont see anything bad in this Interesting that you should mention mutons. -- Satya. |
