"A little Klingon thing"

   From the Klingon Wikipedia article:

"Other Klingon groups run blood drives, bowling teams, and a golf championship."

--- Philip
"Sir, it says 'Par 4. Dogleg left, minefield right." "Ah what a sense of humor. Well, here goes." "Alas, that is a terrible slice." *BOOM*

I am slightly disappointed, Gryph, that you don't recognize a quote from that classic John M. Ford Trek novel, How Much For Just The Planet?. :)

I'm not sure I've actually read all of that one. I couldn't get into it; too much overt slapstick. I never cared that much for the Let's Just Be Whimsical episodes of Star Trek.

That's fair. It's definitely slapstick. And a musical. What a lot of people don't know is that it is ALSO a roman à clef, as nearly all of the new characters are based on other writers (including, surprisingly, Neil Gaiman).

But given that it climaxes in a quite literal pie fight, I can see how it might not be everyone's cuppa.

He was there as well? I knew about the obvious ones (Princess DeeDee, Pete Blackwood, THE BLACK QUEEN JANEKA!!! etc.) but I don't think I've ever seen a complete list of aliases.

And I can't remember where I last saw my copy of the book. Drat. It was right here just a few months ago, I'm sure.

Gaiman was "Ilen the Magian".

I have that trouble with my own copy. ^_^;

Correct. The full list, based on a Usenet post by Ford himself:

Deedee and Pete: Diane Duane and Peter Morwood
Davith and Pam: David Dyer-Bennet and Pamela Dean Dyer-Bennet
Janeka and Rik: Janet and Ricky Kagan
Ilen the Magian: Neil Gaiman
Lieutenant "Ann" (walk-on, belowdecks): Ann Crispin
The Stage Manager: Ford, although in the post he said it was "some weird little guy with glasses"

That was one of my favorite ST books. I think I still have it somewhere in the attic.
