"New indie X-Com:: Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-14-21 AT 11:23 AM (EDT)

Need a X-Com itch scratched? Try Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children, a hybrid of JRPG and X-Com.

Made by an Korea indie company, Troubleshooter is mix of X-Com and a visual novel.

First some of the similarities to X-Com: Chimera Squad
1. Your team is a group of essentially super-powered SWAT members in an unstable nation.
2. Characters at their base, are pre-defined with histories and personalities you don't have full access to changing.
3. The two-level cover system of the latest X-Com games is present.
4. While some of your combat resources are limited (heal and grenades) everything else is on a cool-down system with otherwise unlimited use.

The things that are different:
1. Troubleshooter has a deep customization system. Not only can you freely switch what techniques your character uses (of what they have unlocked) you also have the Mastery system.
2. Want to be able to Overwatch? There's a mastery for that. Counterattacks? Equip the right Mastery. There are more than 200 masteries, many of which are only stat boosts, but many give new abilities.
3. There are a lot of extremely deep systems here. Crafting, robot building, monster taming, etc.

I'm not too far into it myself, but I've found it to be very enjoyable so far. It's not perfect, far from it, but if you are looking for strategic X-Com game, this could do it for you.

I mean I'll give it a try 'cause I like turn-based strategy in general and X-COM style games in particular?

But I (mis)read your post title as "Troubleshooting Abandoned Children" and was hella confused at first.

I've tried this out, and it is fun, but I have a couple of issues with it. Actually, I suspect I have one issue with it that's causing the others.

The main problem is that, for whatever reason, I have a really hard time parsing the English translation. It's not even that bad, I mean, it's not VCR-instructions gibberish, but something about the very specific way in which the grammar is stilted and the word choice is awkward does my head in, particularly in the tooltips and help screens.

As a result, I can make neither head nor tail of most of the game mechanics beyond the stuff that is a direct clone of the Firaxis XCOM template. The mastery and research systems, for example, are completely opaque to my poor old brain. I try to read the in-game explanations, and they just... don't penetrate. Same with most of the ins and outs of the various buffs and debuffs. It feels a lot like the point in Calculus 2, back at WPI, where I distinctly recognized that I had just passed beyond my depth. That feeling of "OK, I'm certain this makes sense to someone, it's not a prank or anything, but that someone is not me."

(The art style throws me off a little, too, but I expect that's just because I haven't consumed much Korean visual media and my well-trained visual cortex assumes it must be Japanese, which it is... not. Quite. It's like parallel-universe Japanese, which is fitting, since everything I've read about South Korea suggests that it is basically parallel-universe Japan. :)

Anyway, it's still fun, so I expect I shall persevere at least until the point at which my inability to get to grips with the character development systems stops me from completing missions.

I love how in the early stages of games like this, the faceless chumps the game gives you to fill out your squad before you've recruited enough proper PCs are often more effective than the face characters. :)

One slight oddity I've noticed in the time I've had this game in my Steam library is that the developers update it constantly, but the updates are almost always tiny. Like, on any given day I'll go to the downloads tab and be virtually guaranteed to find an update for Troubleshooter queued, but it's nearly always, like... 5 MB or less. What are they doing? Pushing corrections to typos one at a time? :)

And on the other end of the spectrum we have No Man's Sky, which updates less often, but they always seem to be at least as big as the original download to install the damn game was.
