"song, 2007.04.17"
|
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore 26,000 tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That big ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came earlyThe ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well-seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang Could it be the north wind they'd been feeling? The wind in the wire made a tattletale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew as the captain did too 'Twas the witch of November come stealing The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashing When afternoon came it was freezing rain In the face of a hurricane west wind When suppertime came the old cook came on deck Saying "Fellas, it's too rough to feed you" At seven p.m. a main hatchway caved in He said "Fellas, it's been good to know you" The captain wired in he had water coming in And the big ship and crew was in peril And later that night, well, their lights went out of sight In the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Does anyone know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay If they'd put 15 more miles behind her They might've split up or they might've capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the rooms of her ice water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams The islands and bays are for sportsmen Farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go, as the mariners all know Where the gales of November remember In a musty old hall in Detroit they pray In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral The church bell chimed 'til it rang 29 times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee Superior, they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early - Gordon Lightfoot "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" Summer Dream (1976) |

LAST EDITED ON Apr-17-07 AT 06:35 PM (EDT) My guess actually is that it refers to an as-yet-unidentified IPSF ship that's gone down with all hands in a natural catastrophe. Enigma Sector is notoriously full of navigational hazards, after all...-Joe- P.S. I had an online acquaintance back a few years ago who was actually present on the scene, more or less, when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. She was a journalist for a local paper on the Upper Peninsula. |

>and a scale map >of Mars (site of a Larry Niven fan convention) somewhere on it. For historical reasons, it would be extremely unlikely for the sphere's owners to go to any particular trouble for the sake of a Larry Niven convention. Back in the '80s, the WPI Science Fiction Society used to host an annual sci-fi convention, Technicon, on campus. That ended the year Larry Niven was the guest of honor. The SFS nearly ended the year Larry Niven was the guest of honor. In conclusion, fuck Larry Niven. --G. -><- Benjamin D. I was a committee member for a convention in Omaha back in the early 90s that had him as a guest of honor. He was very, how do I put it, put out with people who were not his idea of what a proper fan of his should be: fawning but not fanboyish is the closest I can come up with. And you only got a few seconds to make an impression with him. Once you were on the shit list, it was all over. I liked Ringworld and even borrowed it for a Spelljammer campaign I was running. Yep, that put me on the shit list in record time (less than 2 seconds IIRC). So yes, he can be a prick. But can't we all? ;) Michael

About ten years ago at a Philcon, Niven and I were sitting next to each other at a publisher's party, and ended up just chatting away with each other for a good twenty minutes to a half-hour. I can't even remember about what, but apparently I made a good impression, if what you say is true... -- Bob ------------------- The President is on the line As ninety-nine crab rangoons go by... |

Not so much. > Very possible. I seem to recall running into him at Albacon in 2001 and having a pleasant conversation with him myself. But then again, I didn't know who he was initially (I realized it when I saw his badge), and I've never read any of his book either. It's one of several experiences I've had with "celebrities" where I've just treated them as normal people (usually because I didn't realize who they were), and ended up having decent conversations with them...Offsides [...] in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles. -- David Ben Gurion EPU RCW #π #include <stdsig.h> |

That is probably ther most haunting song I've ever heard. I had never heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald before this song, but after hearing it and seeing a couple of shows about the incident, it's hard to forget, especially the last two lines of the song.... Craig |
