>I was just wondering if there were any tokusatsu or sentai fans in the >main Eyrie hierarchy or is just a stream of samurai and anime film >otaku? Sentai's OK if I'm in a silly mood. I have an ancestral fondness for Spectraman because it was on the local UHF station when I was a kid. (I suppose that's not really sentai, since there's no color-coded team involved, but it's as close as I generally care to get.) Don't know what tokusatsu is offhand. I'm also old-school enough to take mild offense at being referred to as an otaku, even though I realize that most of you younger types don't really understand that it's an insult. It doesn't just mean "fan", you know; it has fairly intense connotations of uncleanliness and... how shall I put this... marginal mentality. --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON 02-14-04 AT 11:20 PM (EST) >I believe the appropriate English word is "fanboy". > Okay, one time where my linguistic skills come in handy. "Otaku" literally means "in the house", as in "never leaves the house". The American equivalent, without trying to insult anyone too bad, are the Trekkies that wear their uniforms to work; the model builders who bring all their airbrushes, dremels, and what have you to cons. The episode of Powerpuff Girls with the guy who has every PPG toy in existence? That's an otaku. Every fan should watch "Otaku no Video" (often translated as "Fan's Video") and see what the Japanese define as "Otaku" before they go bandying about the term, or refering to themselves as otaku. Trust me, once you've seen that video, you won't ever refer to yourself as an otaku again. It's THAT scary."Fanboy" works, although to get the true feeling, precede it by the words "Raving and Rabid". On the actual topic at hand, I don't go out of my way to watch it. Sentai is amusing; As far as the whole "Ranger" series I prefer the Japanese versions where the good guys actually get their butts handed to them or get beaten into unconsciousness on occasion. If you get slammed into the ground by your head, even if you are a super-powered action hero, you should probably pass out, in my opinion. It's cheesy, but harmless cheesy. "Ultraman" and that whole genre are good for giggles too. I don't take my sentai shows seriously at all. Well, it depends on what message you choose to take from the film, you know. :) Kubo and Tanaka end up happy despite (or because of, maybe) their otakudom. Now, the guy with the Char Aznable helmet in his cubicle... :) I will become... OTAKING!! >On the actual topic at hand, I don't go out of my way to watch it. >Sentai is amusing; As far as the whole "Ranger" series I prefer the >Japanese versions where the good guys actually get their butts handed >to them or get beaten into unconsciousness on occasion. Out local anime/asian cinema club has lately taken to showing bootlegs of the latest Kamen Rider series, so I've been exposed to a fair bit lately. The genre has it's charms, (like explosions of sparks everytime a hit is scored) but I still prefer Hong Kong martial arts flicks or Japanese schlock samurai action and action/horror- "Reborn From Hell" I and II are personal favorites, as are the Lone Wolf and Cub films. One cool thing about sentai shows that strikes me everytime I see one is that I would *love* to have access to the costuming workshop that's responsible for the "monsters du jour". Some of the things they do with foam rubber and an airbrush are truly impressive. Dave- Artist-at-Large (But not in charge...) ------------

Some of the things they do >with foam rubber and an airbrush are truly impressive. And hot glue. Hot glue can do just about anything, and if you doubt that, just go to an anime con and watch the guys from Big Fire. If any of you did Katsucon 8 and saw the old-school super robot salute skit, you know what I'm talking about. What the TRUE professionals can do is just scary. Because they can actually FIGHT in those suits.
