"A note on the WDF Academy"

The new one, I mean, the one on the edge of New Avalon. Like the original (and, indeed, like most military academies and universities in the galaxy), it's not one building but a collection of them. These buildings are arranged on a several-square-mile campus, officially constituting a district of the City of New Avalon known as Academy Park. Unlike the rest of the city proper, Academy Park is policed by a special division of the Wedge Defense Force Military Police.

As has been mentioned over in the Symphony of the Sword, the WDF Academy campus is distinctive when seen from the air primarily because the Quad in the center of campus is designed to look like the WDF seal (the red parts are Martian redgrass; the white delta is crushed rock). At the head of the Quad stands the Academy's administration building, rather prosaically known as... well, the Administration Building.

Since it's where the Commandant, Registrar, and other luminaries have their offices and also where the Department of Public Affairs is located, Admin is one of the few campus facilities open to the general public. As such, it's one of the only buildings on campus where there's much emphasis on making things shiny and pretty for visitors; the rest of the Academy's facilities are, while among the best in their class, largely utilitarian.

The shiniest and prettiest of its features is the Great Rotunda, the entrance hall through which all Academy visitors must pass. It's also an area that sees a lot of cadet traffic, since Admin is a convenient shortcut through the center of campus. Here, under a dome inspired by the Pantheon in Rome (given the WDF's roots at WPI, suggestions that it's intended to imitate the dome on Building 10 at MIT, or the smaller one on Building 7, are met with considerable indignation), a visitor can find the Academy's only significant accumulation of artworks, in the form of paintings, a few busts and statues, and a couple of holofriezes depicting significant moments or persons in WDF history.

Amid all this, there's a brass plate affixed to the Rotunda wall, near the archway that leads back to the Commandant's office. It's a humble-looking thing compared with the holos and the paintings, and most visitors never notice it, but every cadet knows it well. It's pointed out to them on the first day of orientation, and throughout their careers, many cadets will return to it time and again to read it over, ponder its message, and perhaps draw inspiration. (Actually, this phenomenon isn't limited to cadets; a good many alumni come back to have a look at it when they're in town.) The lower left corner, where it's become traditional to touch the plaque for luck when reporting to the Commandant's office, has been worn shiny and smooth over the years since the new Academy opened in 2383.

The plate reads:

We do not fight because we hate, nor because we wish to control.
We do not kill for killing's own sake.

We fight because we love - love life, love freedom, love decency.
We kill so that others may live, free from oppression, terror, and pain.

- Miria Fallyna Sterling, Class of 2001

Among WDF Academy graduates, this is known simply as "the Creed".

   Well said.

The WDF, from the top down, seems to understand that.

And we love them for it.

I find it all too appropriate that it was Miria that said that.

Just reminded me of my own Academy thoughts of long ago.
Thanks.

Oh dear god I just had a mental flash of WDF 4th-class cadets all lined up, being trained and sounding off....

"Sir, Cmdr Mirira Fallyna Sterling, class of 2001's quote, is as follows:......."

On a somewhat serious note, the description of the WDF reminded me a bit of...Norwich? Though there are some resemblances to the USAFA Terrazo, intentional or otherwise...

I'd love to know what "planes on a stick" or other static displays they got up there...

The bit on the art collection made me think of the memorial paintings and portraits all over the place at the Zoo - particularly the Lance Sijan memorial, and one dedicated to a friend of mine, Maj Jon Scheer, '94...

Heh. I was thinking of how we go about it in the US Navy when the Sailor's Creed is recited.

"ATTENTION TO THE CREED."

It kind of blows my mind a bit to think of all those graduates snapping to attention and reciting Miria's quote, especially considering that most likely every single one of them are saying those words with absolute dedication.

Well yeah, and all things considered in the 25th century, "Bring Me Men" was probably just not gonna cut it :)

Okay, had to Google that one, and of course, it's an old Air Force-ism. I only say old because there's enough stupid people out there to make the Air Force nervous. Crimany, this eerily echoes what Gryphon was saying back in the short stories thread on emancipated robots.

So, watch yourselves, folks! Whether it be tradition or your chosen profession, the International Confederation of Idiots is out there to make sure you're politically correct!

Oh, and MOGSY? Don't include the signature when you quote. It just winds up looking unsightly and is border-line disrespectful to the rest of the forum.
