"This is the new thread"

This is the new thread. Just like the old thread.

Hey, I'm D'Archangel /dark'EN'jel/. By day, a mild-mannered perl coder. By night, a drooling Eyrie fanboy. I've finally stopped denying it. My friends and family did something called an 'intervention' and forced me to come to terms with that part of my life.

Alright, that was pretty apocryphal. In slightly more accurate -- if significantly more mundane -- terms, I do spend a lot of time on Eyrie stuff, both in reading it and in proselytizing all those in my immediate vicinity. Eventually, I'll be reading NXE out loud to my girlfriend -- but that's current queued behind _Wheel of Time_. That one is taking a while.

My parents saw fit to name me Alexander, in case you are interested in that sort of thing. My hobbies are -- now as they have been since a depressingly young age -- reading and electronics. My philosophical approach to life is best summarized as "You don't know it's true until it makes you laugh. But you don't understand it until it makes you cry." I say this because I laugh at everything -- most particularly things that I'm not supposed to. I am indiscriminately amused and delighted by the universe at large.

Musically, I am convinced that Rush is the greatest rock music ever created. That's the sort of topic sentence that really doesn't leave much room for discussion.

Anyway, inspiration deserts me and so I'll stop writing.

Oh, well, better give up that plan, then. Time you're finished with that, she'll be too old to hear and you'll be too old to talk anyway.

At any given point, $num_books_out + 3.

There's a fic out about Lt. Com. Data, eagerly awaiting the publication of the next *mumble* volumes, because he's convinced the series is nearly complete.

Oh, dear, what can the matter be?
Jordan's series goes endlessly,
"Three books still to write," said he,
But that's what he always says.

Is it just me, or is each book getting a bit worse? The general feeling I get from it is that Jorden's running out of ideas, but he wants to keep it going. I can read the first four fine, but from there it starts going sour.

I thought he ran out of ideas after the second, but that's just me. I'm still waiting for Book 5 of the War vs. the Chtorr.

The general consensus (from rasfwr-j) is that _Crown of Swords_ (#7) and _The Path of Daggers_ (#8) were mediocre at best. Personally, I think tPoD blew rancid goats. But with _Winter's Heart_, Jordan seems to have gotten back on track. On the whole, I still really, really like the series. I wouldn't bother with reading the monster out loud otherwise. I'm willing to forgive a lot for a good story.

After slogging through CoS and TPoD, reading Winter's Heart was a pleasant surprise, mostly because there was actual forward motion on the overall plot. I mean, I figured Rand would be cleansing the taint from saidin about halfway through The Eye of the World. I think Jordan finally figured out that people are going to get pissed if the series doesn't go somewhere soon. (I sure as hell won't keep up with it if I can't believe that it's going to end by book 15. Book 12? That I'll believe when I see.) I mean, he's still going to milk it for every penny he can get from it, but he's figured out that he ain't gonna sell books if the audience isn't happy.

And, in the spirit of the series, it will not really be playable until the third supplement comes out. :)

Wouldn't that be the n+3rd supplement? \n_n/

(twitches) Somehow I think calling him Agent Mulder in that context is... just... wrong. (twitches more)

I've never mustered the effort to:
a) finish Path of Daggers
b) read Eye of the World (there are a surprising number of good fanfics based on it though)
c) beg/borrow/steal (or even buy) Winters Heart.

My main complaint though is that he's got publisher's buying huge epics in volumes that can be used to beat Zentreadi to death. (I once used 15*36*2=1080 trading cards as a melee weapon)

Good morning, chaps. I'm Merlin. I'm a sysadmin for a UK ISP, which means I keep different hours to most of the rest of you guys ;-) Annoyingly this generally means I end up playing catch-up on message threads.

My sense of humour and language are a lot on the british side at times. I hope all of you colonials can keep up... ;-)

   Introduce myself.... hmm. okay!

myself being drakensisthered, or drakensis, or a misspelling/pronounciation of the above, I am more usually known as 'he who must never be permitted to raise his voice in song' or by the hebrew for 'like God'. Thankfully for the rest of creation, this is a lie, I am not at all like Her, since I am not a single parent (at least I think I'm not).

but enough of this frivolity. I work in a personal time zone in a job that uses computers but does not teach how to abuse them (and thus am reading up on UNIX in my spare time) and spend the rest of my time in Harrogate (nice place to live) or Huddersfield (better place to skive). Both of these being on the other side of the pond from many of the people on in the Forum I'm sure.

I like (scan bookshelves groaning under the strain) A LOT of RPGs and war games, currently being most interested in Heavy Gear, DragonBall Z and Inquisitor (ducks incoming flames) although I've got a long(ish) history with Battletech and the World of Darkness. Bookwise I favour military science fiction writers like David Weber, Eric Flint and Steve White. I also like the two T's of britiash comedy: Terry Pratchett ad Tom Holt. My favorite overalll though is Grunts by Mary Gentle. Of course, this is in no way secondary to my near obsession with fanfiction... of which I have started to write much, posted less (carefully hidden on my website: no one would ever look for it on a site with almost a hundred other fics posted) and finished an even smaller number. In my copious spare time I watch videos and write html for other, more busy people. Sigh... it's a good life.

Favorite Animes: Dragonball Z, Dual, Trigun, Gasaraki, Berserk, Streetfighter II V and Photon. I'd also like Macross 7 but it's got a lot in common with rockinghorse s*** right now.

How I found Eyrie fics?
Ummm... don't remember. It was while I was at Uni though... ah the good old university fo Hell, Scumberside, whence I came with a degree in geography and economics with extra credits in history... and all the job prospects of a wet herring with rabies.

Musically I like a fair range of rock: Def Leppard, Magnum, Meatloaf, Queen - as well as quite a few anime soundtracks I got hold of. Probably my overall favorite right now is 'Cry', the endtrack to 'Streetfighter II V' (the tv series), with 'My Omlette' from 'Dragon Half' and 'Tell Me Why' from 'Berserk' almost as favoured.

oh well, end of rant...

There's a sort of conspiracy to keep my grandmother ignorant of anything that might upset her. We DON'T want her fretting - she'd pass it on to half the women in the clan...

I find 'My Omelette' to be almost as good as a Drgonball manga for banishing the gloom, doom and near-terminal frustrations of RealLife... and my job's with the best team of the best company (and, remarkably, the best rate of pay for my position) in the industry. I need a lot of help keeping my spirits up.
