"today's graphics twiddling"

There's been mention of various highways around New Avalon and its environs in various stories, most prominently Highway 29 (the New Avalon ring road) and Highway 17 (the main route from New Avalon north to Prisoner's Base in the Clemens range). It's also been mentioned that Captain America's original shield (the one he had before the famous round one) reminds contemporary Avalonians of the signs that mark those routes' numbers.

So, since I really should be working on any number of other things, I of course decided to spend a couple of hours this evening designing a template for Avalonian highway route number signs.

(The gold trim is highly reflective, like the white bits of real-world US highway signs, so at night they look like gold outlines on black.)

That said, nice design, and the mental image I have of the nighttime view is quite striking.

Is the white also retroreflective? Because if not, then it may be hard for those of us with less-than-perfect vision to be able to see the numbers. Gold is a good choice, though, because it's visually distinct from both the headlights and the taillights (though maybe not the turn blinkers, but the signs don't blink).

Of course, with UF technology, it's highly likely that the cars (or their guidance systems) know exactly where the highways are and can help direct the people who need it, even without the signs. So aesthetics may play a larger role in the future.

There isn't any white.

Well, he did say he had less than perfect vision... :)

I wish I could do as well with GIMP. I'm just not much of a graphic artist I guess. I'd post something I've done before, but you would lose all ability to see for several days.

Good point as talent and tool are separate skillsets; still, if you can envision it, gimp probobly can help you realise it. For a while it bugged me that the CSI logo didnt match the 'official' style mentioned in one of the 'featured document' posts... but with the help of gimp, I got this:

and about 3 or 4 other varients on it that I'd always intended to show G and ask if he wanted them, then decided that he probably wouldnt.

*cough,* *cough.*

I remain rather proud of that logo, especially how well I managed to texture it onto Sara's windbreaker in these images. But I'm a giant Photoshop snob. The few times I've tried to work in Gimp have been...painful.

I'm not arguing that Chad... it IS a great logo. It works, its just that ever since I read
this memo I realised that technically that super cool logo didnt MATCH anymore... and being the geek that I am started tinkering to try and make your cool logo match the 'official requirements' thing. Its also why once I had something close enough that my inner monkey would leave it alone it got zipped up and left, not to be shared until this came up, since I didnt intend to step on your toes or anything like that.

and if its any consoloation, I'm sure I'd find trying to transition to Photoshop from Gimp as painfull as you find going the other way to be...

Oh, man, you know what, I totally missed that mine were the 4-point stars still. Mea culpa.

Hrmph. I might go see if I can find the .psd for that and see about adding the extra points, which is all that really needs done. That's gonna bother me now...
