"Manhunt 4"

I'm not sure what's scarier, G. The comments of my last few posts, or the fact that I really really Did make them before you put up the link for Suckers.

Kei and HB, Huh? I dunno what to think of that, though it does just as much if not more in explaining Kei deciding "Its not my job". Also kind of explains her moving over to X 'section', as it kind of feels like she'd realized that she needed a complete change. Lots more thoughts, but at the moment they're not really formed. I'm still so in RCW fanboy mode I'm probobly examining the rest WAY to closely

It may get different, but it sure don't get any easier.

Kei and HB was discussed in HB's BPGD file, actually, at least somewhat.

I'm a little surprised at how muted Kei's reaction was, but it's interesting to see where things will go.

Also glad to see Maia showing up! Now to see just what the hell happens now...

I actually dont, really... Its been a long time, and something like that you either burn out or burn up. Sound like she's tired of the hurt and stopped picking at it and allowed it to heal... and his time in SI allowed G to heal a bit too.

>Also glad to see Maia showing up! Now to see just what the hell

Well, we have the Butcher and UF G just about to be in the same city at the same time... We're getting near the moment of truth. And I need to stop theorizing lest I correctly guess whats next and ruins my surprise.

Think of poor Vanessa. Before she learned to identify and purge them just from the subject headers, she actually read a few.

Objection. Quaternary jokes are throw-away references in the narration. This was a joke that had a set-up and two whole lines of dialogue all to itself, and furthermore conjures up fairly detailed mental images in anyone who is even remotely familiar with the genre.

In other words, it's not that we don't *want* to stop focusing on it...

Well, this IS a turn-up for the books. Of all the things I expected, the one thing I didn't actually expect was for Kei to greet Gryphon in more-or-less-civilized fashion and to let him go his way in peace. I guess time really does heal all wounds, sort of...and it looks like she's got a start already on the process that we, I now guess, will see culminating in Twilight. It's no wonder Gryphon is so astonished as he confesses to Saavik; "John Woo Standoff" is the least I was expecting to see.

Palpatine, if he's the Outer Rim Senator at the time, is playing a deep game indeed if he's helping the nascently-reborn WDF (for, of course, they must have been quietly reorganizing at the Sphere for the last decade by now) counter GENOM's propaganda, but hey, whatever helps.

And at last the Butcher reveals himself...not that I was surprised about that. I had a hunch that it was the damnable scrub from the first time I heard somebody was on the rampage in Saenar. Gryphon is going to have an interesting meeting with Grissom (and Maia) when he arrives, that's certain.

Nice McCoy scene! And do I detect Spock/Valeris somewhere in the offing...? (Seeing as how in the UFverse, it's Uhura/Scotty.) And so that's where the Griffon came from - a mild surprise as I'd always assumed Corwin found it somewhere, not, of course, that I'd ever thought deeply about that particular fiddly bit.

That (apparently) FUCKUP is waging wiki edit wars to further a pro-WDF agenda suggests that Stranger Powers are out there helping with the memetic propagation, too.

Speaking of FUCKUP, I'm a little surprised that *that* would be referenced again. I honestly thought that whole section of the old UF backstory was left to sink into the mire of We Don't Talk About It, Ever.

Oh, I knew the Butcher was in Saenar from the beginning, more or less. The power of narrative demands a confrontation between Gryphon and RepliGryph. Since all the players are converging on Salusia, that would be the place for the penultimate showdown.

Plus, the whole "replicant in a battlemover playing vampire" thing is a dead giveaway. ;)

FUCKUP is a computer system Zoner created quite some time ago. It wasn't ever really intended to be an AI, but sometimes these things happen if you leave huge computers connected to all the major knowledge bases of the galaxy long enough. But no, while the Discordian Confederation as a polity is unlikely to appear again, there is quite certainly a Discordian element remaining in the UF universe. I mean, look at Zoner's post-Twilight state, and the Exile events that are flashed back therein. Eris is out there, and She has followers. Surely you didn't miss Dr. Duke's reference to the Eschaton in conversation with Zoner. This vaguely implies that they're one of the following:

a) Illuminati
b) Trying to stop the Illuminati
c) both

There's no reason to deprecate the Illuminatus influences in UF's past; just as long as we understand that they're general influences, part of the background hum of the universe, and not specific plot structures to which we must be slaves. :)

Aha, I am enlightened. ;) Since FUCKUP is a quasi-pivotal character in Illuminatus! and so much of my long-term memory storage is devoted to pointless trivia, I immediately connected the dots to the Discordian Confederation and not "Zoner being a goofy fanboy." Pattern recgonition sucks sometimes, dude. ;)

I don't remember how long the average human lifespan in the era in question (150 years?) is, but that'd make Palpatine either very young in this time period or a good deal older than previously suspected.

Course, I may have the dates wrong.

Edit: ...oh, I give up trying to make this make sense. From perceived typos to potentially misread dates to a failing memory, I dunno what I'm trying to say.

The simple fact that Kaitlin's not born yet makes me think someone else is Senator most likely. 20 years is a long time to stay in elected office. :)

You obviously haven't taken a look at the US Congress lately, have ya? The longest term in office, uninterrupted, was a little under 57 years, from Feb 1912 to Jan 1969.

Raoul Duke using various pharmaceuticals to "fix" Valeris...somehow, I don't see this ending well.

Henry Lang...now all we need is a Roy Dixon or Lisa Grant and we got a matching set.

So, we get to see some of that workin' relationship with Kei that was spoke about in Hellboy's bio. After working alongside her for awhile, working with Abe must seem rather quiet.

Ah, the "mouthbreather" exchange. Gotta love it.

Even in the 24th Century, the galaxy will not be safe from Edit Wars.

I have some doubts that this is Corwin's Griffin, as you'd think the very first working production model of a car with such significance would be a collecter's item and thus unlikely to just show up in a used car lot. It'd be like finding a Confederate ironclad ship in the middle of the Sahara.

I'm guessing the Rift Conflict is sorta like the Clone Wars, as in a battle/war thrown in for background but never meant to be anything more?

And again, the plot thickens. RepliGryphon gets caught in the act on Salusia just as Real Gryphon is on his way there. I do get the feeling we'll see a Conclusion in the near future.

How true. Seems every year, somebody finds some long-lost painting or artifact that experts thought lost forever or never even knew about.

   Gryphon,

The constant awesome-ness of the past few days has been great. Secrets was good, but the improved writing quality evident in Manhunt, along with cleaning up a few plot holes, makes for a much stronger work, IMHO.

Manhunt just keeps getting better. I absolutely loved this one, particularly the long-awaited Gryphon/Kei reunion. It just got handled so well this time around. I always thought Kei's reaction to the whole Musashi thing came off as a bit forced, out of the character we'd been shown. I absolutely loved that yeah, she's pretty moved on since Gryphon's been gone. Very satisfying to read, for some reason.

Yeah. I really wasn't expecting to be able to say "Huh, Kei's calmed down, a lot," in reference to this fic.

It continues to hold my attention.

“They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.”

   And now, Part 4:

> McCoy looked up from his case notes with a what-are-you-nuts
>expression. "We haven't carried klemvazine on the manifest for 20
>years. Its side effects are extreme."
> "I know, man, I know!" Duke replied, the empty cigarette holder
>in his teeth wagging up and down as he spoke. "What do you think I want
>it for?"

Even if you'd have thought it was for its original use before, one stands
corrected now...

>Jim nearly had the hide off me for the -first- one."

Heh. So Kirk wasnt nearly as amused by the "Puppies" as we were...

> "It's an amnesiac." Duke turned and regarded McCoy with
>horrified, accusing eyes. "Surely to God you don't want to force the
>poor girl to -remember- being able to see through time."

OUCH... IOW, it was one NASTY trip for Valeris. Definatly earning her
redemption without even realising it, isnt she?

> Gryphon shook his head, smiling. "It's okay, Vanessa. I'm
>going to see an old friend. One who's never let me down. I'll be
>fine."

I dunno G... If its who I think it is, remember her best friend and
long time partner not only likes to hang out at her place, but last you
knew was... well... Still wrapped up in the horror of watching Repli-
Gryph splat those kids as she watched.

> He stood at the door of Apartment 261-A (boy, he thought, the
>Central Computer thinks it's cute), hesitating.

Eh? Lemme guess, thats the number to her quarters aboard the Son or
something like that and I've just forgotten?

> "I had it on pretty good authority that you were back from...
>wherever you went," she said, sitting down opposite him at the end of a
>sofa. "If you really -have- been away a long time, it was only logical
>that you'd come to me." She sipped her tea, sat back, and said, "So.
>Where've you been?"

Ok, so Grissom could have called Yuri, though personally I now think he
called someone more like the Queen and SHE passed the word on to Mars
Division and Yuri and some other select members of "We who never believed
that damn sham"

> "Kei!" he heard Yuri say. "What are you doing here? I thought
>you guys were on Tantalus all week."
> "Yeah, well, we were," Kei's voice replied, and Gryphon noted to
>himself that, at least, the sound of her voice -did- still give him a
>little thrill. "Except that Amberson decided Sunday that he didn't need
>us after all.

Heh. The more things change, et all...

> Yuri nodded. "Fine. Go to Salusia. The man you want is called
>Grissom. He's a scientific investigator for the RSMP. You'll find him
>in Saenar. He has what you want."
> "Whose side is he on?"
> "He's not on anyone's side. He's a scientist."

Not just ANY scientist, though... But yeah, he's the type who will susupend
judgement in favor of finding the facts.

>"If you let her down, I'm comin' for you."
> Gryphon met his yellow gaze unflinchingly, seemed to look into
>him for a few seconds, and then smiled.
> "I like you," he said. "You'll do."
> Hellboy backed off, looking quizzical. "Do for what?"
> "For her," Gryphon said.

IOW, when you love someone you want the best for them even if it turns out
that the best for them isnt YOU, HB.

>Oh - and Henry?"
> "Yes, sir?"
> "Buy some photon torpedoes if you have any money left over.
>Having just the one is embarrassing."

Yeah, unless you rename the ship Barney Fife!

> What was really sticking in Grissom's throat, though, was the
>-second- conclusion the evidence was forcing him to consider now. Of
>the seven killings he and Chu had investigated since February 21, three
>fit that same pattern perfectly.
> The other four didn't fit it at all...
> ... but they bore an eerie resemblance, in some particulars, to
>each other.

IOW, we have TWO, TWO serial killers for the price of one...

> Gryphon nodded. "Well, my plan wasn't to walk into Queen Shiva
>Square and make an announcement," he observed.

OOOO.... Famous last words there...

> Vanessa smiled a little tiredly. "I didn't think the captain
>needed or wanted to hear about the Largo/Gryphon slash fans."
> Saavik paused, at a genuine loss this time. "I am unfamiliar
>with this context for the word 'slash', I think."
> "Seriously, just forget it," Vanessa said. "You're better off
>not knowing."

EEEWWW.... Just... EEEWWW. Even after massive amounts of brainwashing
it still wont come out. *Shudder*

> "No," Gryphon replied, walking around the car, "but it was named
>after me. Where did you ever find a Sunrise Griffon in Eleanor City?
>I don't want to know if you boosted it from a museum."

What, not E-Bay? You know, there have been some other comments about the car's
provenance on the boards after this came out, about what the heck was VIN
GRN-00000001 doing on a used car lot instead of a museum, but looking here, and
thinking back on SoS, no where does anyone actually say 1) that this IS the same
Gryphon (though it stands to reason it is) nor that it actually is THE first one off
the line. I seem to recall Corwin saying it was ONE of the first, not THE first.

> "If that ship is native to this dimension, even if it's from
>another -time,- its subquantum resonance should still be 100.24
>millicurtisses," Grissom told her. "As I said, that wouldn't be
>definitive proof that it's native, but if it's different... "

The last few paragraphs didnt seem to make that much sense prior to this
but I think I get it now. If the hull piece DID have a resonence of 100.24,
you would need to do more tests to prove where it came from. But since
its got a resonence of 723.12, you CAN prove its not from around here, right?

>and if he -is- the man you think he is, he's hardly going to
>stroll into the Great Lodge and ask us to scan him."

If he thought it was the best way to prove his innocence, yes he would.
As Hunter would say "Sometimes the smartest thing is to dive STRAIGHT
INTO THE VORTEX"

> Grissom's brow creased. "Harrison? Is that you? I can barely
>hear you. What's that noise?"
> "Need help!" Chu called back. "My location - the Vampire!"

Ah, the second clue that there are TWO serial killers. On my first read
I was totally convinced that it was ONLY the Butcher doing all of this
even though you've done your best to lay the groundwork otherwise.

>"Mars
>Division has the Queen's warrant, you know that. All you have to do is
>say the word and I'm deputized, subject to the Confidentiality Act."
>With a little smirk, she added, "And you know I can keep a secret."

All of which folds right back into Azrael always being in G's courner,
and probobly one of the key movers of the "Lets get him cleared" conspiracy
especially since Lord F is still up to his eyeballs in getting the materiel
side of the WDF ready for when his 'Children' return.

>Grissom could tell by the
>way his legs were splayed on the ground that that probably wasn't going
>to work.

Ick. Broken legs at the minimum, probobly additional internal injuries to
boot I assume..

> Gritting his teeth against the rising waves of pain, Chu
>swallowed hard, then said, "He's the Butcher, Gil. The Butcher of
>Musashi. He's here. In Saenar. Tonight."

At LAST! Proof that our suspicions WERE correct and at least ONE of the
killers is the Butcher... Though one would have originally thought he'd
have been the one going after kids, but I guess he was given orders to NOT
hit kids to avoid tipping his hand and eating young adults was his best
comprimise between his needs and his orders.

Officially, Codename Lovely Angel is Trouble Consultant team #261. The 3WA Central Computer apparently got them Apartment 261-A in an effort to be Precious. (Which, given that the 3WA Central Computer is FUCKUP's secret identity, is probably to be expected. :)

Right. To use a real-world forensic example (from the days before DNA analysis), if your suspect is blood type O, and the sample you have is blood type O, that doesn't prove it's the suspect's blood; but if it's blood type A, that does prove it isn't.

I disagree Pete. For one, we see Duke shoveling his personal 'stash' into
one of his travel bags back in 3. For two, Duke/Hunter has been 'doing' stuff
for 400 years... I'd expect that he has a "Acting normal even if higher than a
kite" skill of 11. Valeris, on the other hand... And as you read on they
discuss the... ethics of treating a bad "Bombing" with other drugs... Happens I agree with Duke somewhat, at least about not remembering being able to see through time. That seems like the sort of thing that causes SAN loss...
