"teaser: Manhunt 5"
|
The Surprise's ATC-prescribed flight path took them through several of the standard orbital bands, with course and speed calculated to maintain a minimum safe separation between her and the vessels already "parked" in those orbits. That minimum safe separation was within visual range, though, and as they passed through the outer bands, all the hands on the Surprise's bridge caught sight of the familiar shape of a Constitution-class starship - the same shape as their lost, beloved Invincible - coming into view around the limb of the planet. Without being asked, Rick Sterling dialed in a higher magnification setting, and the ship leaped into closeup, every detail crystal clear. She was one of the -old- Connies, before the famous Enterprise refit of (their home year) 2271, with the cylindrical warp nacelles and the smooth grey paint job. As she finished her "turn" around the planet, her markings came into clear view. "Hey, look, it's the Enterprise," said Max. "Holy antiques, Batman," Rick remarked. "This timeline must not be as far along in starship technology," observed Jamie. Sterling grinned and ran a hand through his jagged mop of blue- black hair. "I wonder if the female crewmen are wearing those old microdress uniforms with the go-go boots." "Focus, Mr. Sterling," Gryphon chided him mildly. "Focus." "Aye aye, sir, sorry, sir." |

I note that the SI crew comes from one of those universes where (a) Batman is fictional or (b) is known as a particularly campy superhero. If only they knew who's sitting in the captain's chair... ;) -Joe- |

Joe's point was that: a) with the exception of Gryphon, none of the Surprise's crewhave been in the UF-verse long enough to discover there actually is a Batman 'here', so the comment must have been refering to a fictional Batman in their home universe. b) Gryphon was basicly the original (UF) Batman while pretending to be Bruce Wayne early in the Exile. ------------- Lead me not to temptation, for I can find it myself. Just so. You are to consider, also, that if the SI Batman is fictional, it is certainly possible that other UFverse superheroes are also figures of fiction in the SIverse. Thus, the Surprises will have any number of surprises waiting for them in decades to come. -Joe-

>Just so. You are to consider, also, that if the SI Batman is >fictional, it is certainly possible that other UFverse superheroes are >also figures of fiction in the SIverse. This is almost certainly the case; the Split Infinitive Earth was almost certainly a plain old ordinary Earth, just like the one we live on, until at least 1965, and the changes thereafter would have been relatively small until the actual FTL spaceflight era, so the comic books of the 20th century (apart, obviously, from the licensed Star Trek comics) will have existed there. Most have probably been forgotten by the 23rd century, as we have today forgotten most of 16th-century pop. lit., but the icons will have endured. --G. -><- Benjamin D. With all this, I suppose it's just as well that nobody in the early 25th century has as yet found a way to travel reliably and safely between universes/dimensions/continua.....um. Wait. Stop. Strike that. Travel between Asgard and Midgard, and between Midgard and Cephiro, is routine for those who have the knowledge and powers required. (I always have wondered if those powers extended to being able to move the Valiant to the pocket universe of Cephiro whenever the Art of Noise stopped there on tours, or whether Utena had to park the ship somewhere suitable during those layovers.) In view of the foregoing, I should suppose that one of these days, somebody will be able to find a way to move routinely between more, er, mundane universes. And then things are REALLY toing to get complicated. -Joe- |

And then things are REALLY toing to get >complicated. So complicated that I'm likely to use my authorial fiat to keep it from happening, because frankly I don't need that tsuris. :) Though I should point out that the UF version of a TARDIS (unlike the one on the TV show, which was nearly blown up doing it once) finds travel across time nearly as routine as traveling through it. There's only one Gallifrey, and from there you can get almost anywhere you want. This is unlikely to become of casual use to the everyday citizen, however. As for the Valiant, I confess I've never really considered it. I suspect they put her in dock at Zeta Cygni for that part of the tour and just take the train; given that Cephiro is a Ptolemaic cosmos, they wouldn't want to risk any accidents with the crystal spheres by taking a starship in there. --G. -><- Benjamin D.
