"Ghost in the Shell (2017) (SPOILERS and review/discussi"

So, I saw it last night. At the time, I thought it was pretty okay, but later, I realized that there wasn't really anything TO it. Parts TRIED to be an examination of identity, but not enough, and the parts it copied wholesale from the original 1995 movie seemed out of place with the different context.

I'm not upset about ScarJo being the Major, since part of the point was that she not resemble her previous life in any way whatsoever, and the altered setting is such that she can't really just swap into a new body the way she could in the source.

For those who haven't seen and don't care about spoilers, the Major is 'Mira Killain'(Or something), the supposed first full body cyborg. She's actually Motoko Kusanagi, an abducted teen from a lawless zone that was captured for the experimental Project 2571 (If I recall) as I guess a prototype for cyborg soldiers or something. It's repeated often by the bad guys that she's a weapon, but since he's an executive in Hanka, a government-funded robotics company, it's unclear what his actual goal really is. It's a very Robocop thing; human mind in a synthetic body, because AIs and robots are predictable and unsuited to be soldiers.

....It's really kind of a mess, but it's a PRETTY mess, and the flaws didn't come to me until hours later, so....you can immerse yourself in it, at least. Or I could.

Batou and Aramaki got the most screen time besides ScarJo, and they were pretty dang excellent. Aramaki especially, who spoke only japanese and was subtitled fairly decently, as well as got a couple nice action scenes. Ishikawa was little more than a walk-on. Togusa had a scene or two. And that sniper that I always forget the name of was really only seen once.

Besides ScarJo, the bad guys, and a couple of female doctors who got some time, everyone was non-white, so everyone crowing about how it flopped because it erased PoCs is really kinda missing the point, I think.

I forgot to look at the credits to see if Shirow had anything to do with the script, or had a producer credit or anything, and I can't be arsed to check IMDB for that, but I'm under the impression he was okay with the changes and casting?

Anyway, I initially gave it a 6.5/10, but I think I'm going to make it a straight 5.

   Togusa is best Section 9.

"Togusa! If you're still alive, get off your ass and arrest those garbagemen."

I seem to recall on one of the commentary tracks (or maybe it was at a convention) that the creators had that in mind, that Togusa was further back on the career curve that leads to occupying a position like Aramaki's. I do recall that he was leading the team in Solid State Society, which is a step in that direction.

Am I just terrible at movies until well afterwards?

>So, anybody else seen it? I wanna know if my reaction was normal or
>what.

Couldn't tell you, I haven't seen it. Don't feel any particular urge to.

I did re-watch the original the other day, for the first time in probably 20 years. I'm not sure I'd ever watched it on home video, but I saw it a bunch of times when the dub was making the rounds of arthouse theaters. I'd forgotten a number of things about it. For instance, that most of the English voice acting is pretty weak, particularly—a bit unfortunately—Major Kusanagi.

(The English VAs were not, one feels upon further review, well-served by the script or the direction. For instance, no one involved in the translated version of the scene with Togusa and Kusanagi discussing guns knew what the hell "Mateba" or "Zastava" meant and just made something the fuck up based on the phonemes in the original Japanese, which is why—even in the subtitles—Kusanagi chides Togusa for his reliance on his outdated Matever and orders him to switch to a Zastober. Still, you can't lay all the dub's problems at the doorstep of indifferent production. Kusanagi sounds like the voice online dictionaries use to tell you how to pronounce words. I realize she's supposed to have kind of a flat affect, but Jesus.)

Also that the art direction is sort of radiantly unengaging, especially when compared with the source. It hasn't aged well, either.

Mainly, though, I was reminded of a visual that Zoner and I got from the scene where Batou is chasing the dude in the thermoptic raincoat (which has a cameo (dis)appearance in Eyrie Productions Destroys the Marvel Universe, I've just remembered) through the street market. Batou spots the guy, whips out his pistol, yells that he's with the police, and causes a panic, in which his target basically makes good his escape.

In the our-heads/UF-universe version of that scene, the dude still got away, but it went down a little differently.

EXT. DAY. A STREET MARKET on FUNKOTRON. BATOU prowls the crowds, scanning on every wavelength his sensor suite can perceive, and finally isolates his target using ultrasound. He whips out his sidearm.

BATOU
(yelling)
POLICE! EVERYBODY GET DOWN!

People in his vicinity glance at each other, shrug, and set to work. Instantly, and to BATOU's visible consternation, the street market converts into a block party. Vendors whip away displays of their wares and replace them with disco lights, speakers, and all the other accoutrements. "Partyman" by Prince starts blaring. People crack glowsticks, drop some E, and get ready to go for the rest of the day and all night long.

BATOU POV INTERCUT. The silhouette of the RAINCOAT MAN looks around in obvious bafflement, then turns and disappears into the dancing throng.

BATOU
... Shit!

He runs after his target, elbowing his way through the crowd.

I don't think we ever used that scene, but even if it was off-screen, it totally happened at some point.

In UF, Batou's first name is Lloyd. No real reason. He just looks like a Lloyd.

Now I'm imagining Batou and the Major traveling to Funkotron.
