"glaring omissions dep't"

It just recently occurred to me, as I was catching up with his televised adventures, that though we've seen various of Don Griffin's adventures and had one visit from Romana, we've never actually seen Don's favorite cousin on screen in UF.

Maybe I ought to fix that.

Being a rather big fan of the show, moreso of the production that started in 2005, I have to ask, how caught up are you at this point, and have you yet been introduced to the character of River Song?

Almost completely, barring the last couple-three episodes of series 4 and the not-series-4-but-not-series-5-either stuff from last year. So yes, I have. Which was quite surprising. And here I was all that time thinking that Donna was the most annoying woman the Doctor would ever meet. :)

in the new series, anyway. I mean, there's always Romana Mk. 1

Nobody, nobody is more annoying than that bloody fishwife. River's just what happens when a middle-aged aunt gets hammered at a Christmas party.

Aw, she got better. Everybody's always pickin' on Donna. I mean, she'll probably never crack my top 5, but still, I do rather like her after, oh, say "Planet of the Ood". The idea of sending along a fully grown woman who doesn't Find The Doctor Compelling so much as she's just kind of blokey with him was a bold experiment, and I salute them for trying it. I enjoy the lack of extraneous awe. (Particularly after her predecessor. There was a lot of extraneous awe there. :)

Mind you, had it been me attempting such a thing, I'd have offered Lis Sladen her old job back first, but don't go by me. By then she had her own show anyway.

>River's just what happens when a middle-aged aunt gets hammered at a
>Christmas party.

She's so... smug. I just want to headbutt her, particularly in "The Time of Angels". It's like the Doctor has found himself periodically encountering a female version of his own sixth self. I'd run away too, and I wouldn't be inclined to let any towering Scotswoman talk me out of it. :)

Ah. I was kinda including the smug... must just be my particular pack of relatives, I guess. We've apparently been bred with noses specially designed for looking down at people with.

I'll agree that Donna got a bit better, but that just meant she was treading water in the Ocean of Unlikableness* rather than being submerged in it. And yes, the lack of fawning was refreshing after Martha. It's just... why couldn't they have got someone else?

River's fun in that she completely throws the Doctor off balance, but damn, her 'oh look, I can drive the TARDIS better then the Doctor' routine gets old quickly, no matter how clever her method of getting a message to him was.

Also, if said Towering Scotswoman tried to talk me out of it, I think I'd be convinced. That voice, that body? Hard to say no to.

I was rather fond of Donna mostly because I was exceptionally tired of the companion being in love with The Doctor in one way or the other. River was annoying in the latest episode, but I think that if she's slated to be in future episodes as has been hinted at in the confidential for the episode - possibly as an extended companion as is hinted - that she could bring out unexplored aspects of The Doctor's character. That interests me.

I'm pretty sure that the towering scotswoman could talk me in or out of many things.

   Okay, fully caught up now.

I have to say, exceptional performances and generally astronomical standard of production values aside, I am now deeply, deeply tired of the whole "the Doctor's life is an obligatory vale of tears" thing. I understand the practical reasons for it - actors don't stay in jobs forever, people get older, etc., etc. - but, man, it gets old after you've been bludgeoned about the head and shoulders with it for a while. Part of it's my own fault for watching the whole busload over the course of a week or two, but still, I mean, damn, yo.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about actors getting sick of living in Cardiff. And hey! It's an easy repair compared to some I've had to tackle. Shouldn't take me more than another... I dunno, hour or two? :)

OK, now you've got me wondering if we'll be seeing any jokes, either in-story, or more stuff in the Featured Documents forum, about the 100th Doctor.

But there aren't a hundred Doctors.

There have been, however, a hundred Professors... :)

You know, I've been wondering for a while... did the Professor Enigma counterpart of Ace insist on calling him "Doctor"?

On the subject of something that might work a little better for the EPU production cast... there already exists audio fanfiction for Doctor Who. Google "Bill Baggs Video" sometime. :)

Thus showing how awake I wasn't, when I typed that.
