"Thank You Gryphon"

LAST EDITED ON May-24-10 AT 05:24 PM (EDT)

I have been reading Eyrie stories now for about 16 years. Started back with R.A.A.C and stumbled upon the "core" UF stories and got hooked on fanfics in general. Along the way Gryphon introduced me to many an Anime series I had never heard of or had much interest in watching, along with a few TV shows. Of your most recent works, SoS got me to watch Utena, Neon Exodus Evangelion got me to watch the original series also, CSI New Avalon prompted a few weeks of binging to catch up with the series and finally the Phoenix Project has me watching the newer Dr. Who stuff.

So again, thank you for your wonderful stories that prompted me to find the original works to enjoy also.

Edit: How could I forget his crew of "Usual suspects"? They to get a helping of thanks for their work also.

Nathan

Allow me to add my thanks. I've been reading eyrie works for about six years. I've gotten more enjoyment from reading the eyrie work than almost anything else I've read. And given that I average about 500 books a year thats sayin' something! I actually found Eyrie because of Neon Genesis Evangelion...and let me say, I enjoyed Neon Exodus Evangelion a hell of a lot more, nihilism is not to my taste. I've also gone on to explore other media thats been introduced here. Lets just leave it at the notion that Gryph and the usual suspects are mind bendingly awesome.

>500 books a year thats sayin' something!

Y'know, this is the exact reason I got into reading fanfiction online. I read far too much and in periods of literary "drought" I've scoured the 'tubes looking for material to continue reading, in between published releases!

...This experiment has yielded very mixed results; Most internet-lit is so bad as to cause me physical discomfort in attempting to get through it.

Luckily, Gryph can write! I'm happy here.

>because of Neon Genesis Evangelion...
>I enjoyed Neon Exodus Evangelion a hell of a lot more, nihilism is not to my taste.

I concur, if for no other reason than SHINJI MANNING-THE-FUCK-UP AND GROWING A PAIR.

>I've also gone on to explore other media thats been introduced here.

True! Googling references used in the UF-verse has been a small but perversely addictive hobby of mine. I'm sure others have flown completely by me, which I've accidentally attributed to the creativity of the EPU staffers...I'm ok with that however. :-)

I'm another one of the people that started reading back when the years still started with '19'. I read NXE first, but held off on reading UF until spring of 2000, when I went back to college and had time to kill (being 25 and not a brain-dead freshman anymore, drinking to unconsciousness no longer held any fascination, so I needed SOMETHING to do...) due to the daunting scale of it at the time. I can't imagine what it would look like to someone approaching it NOW, with not only all of the stories, but the Mini-stories and all the supplementals...yeah.

So thanks Gryphon, as well as the rest of the crew, especially Phil Moyer, Doc Mui, Larry Mann, Zoner, and former author Kris Overstreet, who I've all met at sometime in the past, for putting up with me in person and on the forums.

It's a hell of a lot to take in, speaking as someone who only started in early 2008. Fun, though. Took me about three months almost solid to get through everything.

For reference, the fifth Harry Potter doorstop took me seven hours.

Thanks be unto Gryphon for the creation of such a sprawling, irreverent, utterly wonderful multiverse. Thanks be unto the Usual Suspects, whom art the sword in his right hand. If I manage to pull my finger out and finish a story that's anywhere near as good as UF, I'll be a happy woman.

I imagine somewhere in Gryphon's Home, there is a massive five ring binder thick with plots, characters, histories, places, and everything else relating to the s past, present and future....

I just hope he never drops it -- I'm not sure any floor built will withstand that much weight being dropped on it all at once....B-D

I think he might have once, given this from Christmas Rose:

"Please don't stake it into the floor," he muttered through a
grin made of pure cheese, waving his hands in a futile
panic-dispelling gesture. "We've already had to fix divots in the

I'm going to go ahead and add my thanks to the list.

Publishing yourself on the internet is usually a one way ticket to ignominy. Gryph, Zoner, Kris, everyone who writes or has written, or even made art, for Eyrie: You guys Did It Right. I'm not going to say there haven't been bumps in the road. I'd be lying if I did. But you've had the courage to go back, say 'Hey, we screwed up here,' and then, by God, you -fixed it-, which is better than 99.999% of the writers in the world can say. I respect you guys a hell of a lot. I'm pretty sure all of us do.

I, for one, plan to remain an avid reader for as long as you keep writing. Thank you for everything you've written and for everything you will write.

I'd like to echo this sentiment; I started with Core in '94? '95? All I remember is that the World Wide Web was shiny and new, and UF was one of its wonders. I know, I know - UF harks back to USENET, but in those days much of the Web's content was stolen from there... I recall first encountering UF on a giant web page with the Kei/Yuri pic up top and all four Core stories inline underneath, which was pretty rough on a 28800 baud connection.

Enough reminiscing. The point of this post is to express appreciation for all the hard work Gryphon and the rest of the EPU staff have done over the years. When I first started reading UF, it enthralled me mostly because of its infectious sense of fun. More than a decade later, EPU works, while markedly different in many ways, have always retained that same sense of fun.

Not to say that I've loved all of it unconditionally - SoS took a *long* time to grow on me, for example - but it's always been a fun ride. So anyway, thanks very much for providing a whole heaping pile of entertainment.
