(engineering diagram by J. Crouch)
USS Invincible
(NCC-1717)
OVERVIEW
USS Invincible was a Constitution-class starship constructed in an alternate dimension for that universe's equivalent of the United Federation of Planets Starfleet. Under the command of Captain Benjamin D. Hutchins (who served in that dimension's Starfleet during his time as an interdimensional refugee), she suffered a major drive failure and arrived in this dimension in February 2380. She was subsequently destroyed in a crash.

HISTORY
USS Invincible was ordered from the San Francisco Yards in 2268 as a replacement for USS Excalibur (NCC-1664), which was destroyed that year in an incident involving an experimental computer system. The vessel, originally constructed as a Mark II (Block 3) Constitution-class starship, was assigned the hull number NCC-1717 and was commissioned in August of 2269.
Over the next 25 years, Invincible completed four standard Starfleet five-year deployments under two different commanding officers. During the downtimes between deployments, she was refitted and upgraded several times. By the time Captain Hutchins took command in 2293, Invincible had been uprated to the Mark VI standard, making her functionally equivalent to the brand-new Block 7 Constitutions still entering service at that time. She would be upgraded once more, during the refit between the two five-year missions Hutchins commanded her on, to the Mark VIII standard.
In (native timeline) 2303, Invincible was severely damaged in a fight with undisclosed forces, transitioned to our dimension (arriving in February 2380), and suffered a warp core breach. The starship's engineering hull and warp nacelles were destroyed in the explosion, while the heavily damaged saucer section crash-landed on the planet Xawin (in the Strenuus system, coreward of Salusia). More than three-quarters of the ship's crew was killed in the battle and subsequent crash.
DISPOSITION
The wreck remained on Xawin until 2384, when Captain Hutchins (better known in this dimension as Gryphon) led a Wedge Defense Force salvage team to recover it. Most of the materials were reclaimed and used in the construction of the supercarrier WDF Concordia (CVS-65). The ship's bridge module was re-used outright as Concordia's first bridge; it was removed during the carrier's 2403 refit and re-used once again as the bridge of the International Police Space Force flagship, IPS Challenger (NCC-04462).
The original bridge plaque is now in Gryphon's office on the top floor of the International Police Headquarters building in New Avalon.
Invincible's bridge plaque; the motto translates as, "Where is unity, there is victory."
ANALYSIS
Apart from the special FTL computer core which replaced the standard duotronic processor in order to accommodate the CLULESS AI construct codenamed Vision (and a small hangar installed directly below the captain's quarters to house a VF-1 Valkyrie fighter), Invincible was a normal Constitution-class starship of her home dimension, which were similar in most respects to those here in our universe. She was a highly capable cruiser-type warship. Similar vessels with slightly updated capabilities are still in service today.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Apart from being the vessel that brought Gryphon home from his exile in another dimension, Invincible is significant for having been the first starship of which he had full, official command. He commanded the ship for a decade, almost completing two five-year Starfleet deployments, and built the command crew he would later employ with great success aboard Concordia during the War of Corporate Occupation and subsequent WDF oeprations. Many of his officers from Invincible still serve with distinction in the Wedge Defense Force today - most notably Admiral Saavik, commander of the WDF Navy's carrier fleet. It can also be argued that the spirit of Invincible's crew, as exemplified by the ship's Latin motto, still informs both WDF and IPSF policy and corporate culture.
