""I am a man of wealth and taste""

LAST EDITED ON Jun-03-01 AT 05:41 AM (EDT)

I started reading UF sometime in 1994 or 1995 - I'm not sure.

I'm 21 now, so I was 14 or 15 then, and consequently had no money.

So, to satisfy my thirst for this strange phenomenom from the land of the rising sun called "anime", to which a section of every month's "PREVIEWS"* magazine was devoted, I turned to the library of alexandria. I mean internet.

Is it just me, or are serach engines not scaling well to the growth of the web?

Anyway, I went to altavista.com (which I still use because I'm too lazy to A) shop around for one that finds things better B) learn how to use the advanced features of another site), and did a search for +"dirty pair" +fanfiction.

Lo and behold, the first link I clicked brought me to a nameless UF fansite.

AFAIK it no longer exists, but I can describe it easily enough. The main page consisted of the now familiar inspiration.gif, and four links. One for each
core story. They had been html-ized, that is to say, they had the .html extension, and maybe had a <HTML><BODY>...</BODY></HTML> included.

I read the first one, and laughed my ass off. Then I read the rest. Then I found the raas archive and read the rest of the canon.

BTW, does anyone remember an Undocumented Features website that had the whole canon grouped into CORE/GOLDEN AGE/EXILE/FUTURE IMPERFECT, just like the UF section of this site? "UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES" in big grey blocky letters at the top of the page?

Anyway, Arek Rashan is the name of a Star Wars character I once played in a ridiculously overpowered campaign run by my roommate. He was named Erik Rashan, but for some damnfool reason he always wrote it Arek. When I saw that spelling I actually liked it better, because I think it seems like a "Star Wars" name.

That campaign ran out of steam a while back, but as my roommate returned from KublaCon with a bunch of SW source material, he is making noises about running a revised version of the campaign at a lower power level. Yay!

My hobbies entertain me. I read, write, roleplay, build PCs, and teach myself C and Linux**

I once ran a champions character named Benjamin Hutchins who had a suit of power armor that was almost entirely, but not quite, unlike the GRF-3N Griffin III Armored Combat Suit.***

I am patiently <twitch> waiting *shake* for the next UF installment. Maybe we need to change Gryphon's handle to "George Lucas".

I know, I know, it'll be finished when it's done. Consider my wretched state as a deprived junkie as a tribute to the compelling nature of your writing and characters. I tip my hat to you, gentlemen.

* PREVIEWS - The magazine of the comics industry. This is probably what your local comics shop consults when they plan their orders each month, and any serious collector needs this magazine. You'll actually know ahead of time about all of the confusing crossovers and special issues and miniseries so you won't have to frantically run around the state looking for that book you missed. In short, if your comic shop can't or won't get you this magazine, you need a new comic shop.

** For those who care, I'm using a modified Slackware 7.1 distro that's been upgraded to Linux 2.4.3 and XFree86 4.0.2. I make my own packages but I haven't yet become l33t enough to grok SlackBuild. I need DSL so I can grab slackware-current and so I can start playing around with apache.

*** Apologies to the late, lamented Douglas Adams. He will be missed.

That was probably the previous version of this site, or perhaps the version before that.

And I first created that hierarchy in my FTP archive, so other sites copied it.

Apparently whoever's administrating the raac archive couldn't figure out where Wilderness fit into the big scheme of things, though...

Kind of a tricky call, I suppose - with all the moving around in time Kris did, it's got its feet in two different eras and a hand in the third. We ended up filing it in 'Exile' because that's where the bulk of the 'NOW' action happens, though admittedly it's all right at the very end of that period.

Where did raac put it?
