"sotd, 11/11/2001"

(This was almost the end title for Hunted Rose, until I realized that there's an even better place for it later on. So I guess this is kind of a teaser, though not for an immediately imminent part.)

Growing up
You don't see the writing on the wall
Passing by
Moving straight ahead, you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain
You'll find you're all alone, everything has changed
Play the game
You know you can't quit until it's won
Soldier on
Only you can do what must be done
You know in some way you're a lot like me
You're just a prisoner
And you're trying to break free

I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazing sky
I'll be with the eagles flying higher and higher
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
Saint Elmo's fire
Ooh

Burning up
Don't know just how far that I can go
(Just how far I'll go)
Soon be home
Only just a few miles down the road
And I can make it
I know I can
You broke the boy in me
But you won't break the man

I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazing sky
I'll be with the eagles flying higher and higher
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
Saint Elmo's fire
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel Saint Elmo's fire burning in me
Burning in me

Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
I'm coming alive

I can hear the music playing
I can see the banners fly
Feel like a man again
I'll hold my head high
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
Saint Elmo's fire
I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazing sky
I'll be with the eagles flying higher and higher
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where the future's lying
Saint Elmo's fire
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel Saint Elmo's fire burning in me
Burning
Burning in me
I can feel it burning

It seems like this is referring to a future feature length Movement or Entr'acte featuring either Corwin or Devlin, is that a fair supposition to make? Since you're almost inviting speculation on that, I figured it was fair game to speculate. :) Since we've already had a feature length piece with Devlin as a main character, I'd guess that this one is going to be Corwin's. Of course, I don't expect the Authors to confirm or deny, I was just wondering.

I'm guessing that this is going to go with the part that deals with Corwin's apotheosis (or whatever the term is for a demi-god becoming a god.) The references to 'coming alive' and becoming a man seem to point in that direction.

As a side note, just what is St. Elmo the patron saint of? Muppets? And does the UF pantheon even have saints?

Might have something to with lightning perhaps, or the ocean. I believe "St. Elmo's Fire" is a reference to the discharge given off by a submarine's rotors, or something like that. I believe I first the term in The Hunt for Red October, by my memory can remember things oddly. Wait a minute... Here is something about it:

Saint Elmo's fire is the glow that accompanies a steady discharge of electricity from certain objects. It occurs during thunderstorms or at other times when electrified clouds are present, and it is visible only in complete darkness.

In the past, St. Elmo's fire was commonly seen around the masts of sailing ships. Today, people sometimes see it around the propellers and wing tips of airplanes that are flying through electrified clouds. A few people have reported observing St. Elmo's fire around the horns of cattle. The name Elmo is a form of Erasmus. Saint Erasmus was considered the patron saint of Mediterranean sailors.

According to http://rc.cx/saints/elmo.htm, he is the patron saint of ammunition, fireworks, explosives, demolition workers, sailors and women in labor.

(Trigger's evil feminist twin): Why does it necessarily need to do with one of the boys?
On any given day in UF, the theme music deals with more than one character. One of the reasons I've always like the music choices is because in my little brain I can see a montage of scenes from the story in question. In this case it could be any of our heroes or all of them. Remember, our context clue is that it fit Hunted Rose well, but it fit a later moment in the arc better.

Anyway, I suspect it has to do with a couple items that are about to come up:
1. Dorothy's turing test (1 month away in UF time)
2. Amanda's Xenia showdown and wedding to Devlin (no long engagements for these folks)

SPECULATION: OFF

Um... because the lyrics would require significant rewriting for it to be about one of the girls?

I dunno about you, but I don't particularly want Kaitlyn, for example, to "feel like a man again."

<laughing> Ok, you may have a point...I tend to take song lyrics and make them gender neutral, simply because the number of goodsongs in english (or spanish) that are written to be sung by men, rather than women. For example, I love "Smooth", and sing it, even though I'm not interested in a "Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa".
