One thing that frustrated me slightly about working on Clarion Call was that I thought of a perfect bit of music to use for the as-close-to-a-wedding-as-they-got scene, but then discovered that it had never been published except as background music in a television miniseries. Those of you who have been watching for a while might remember that I used Michael Kamen's end title theme from the excellent HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon as Corwin's theme years ago, in Interlude at the Hotel Monolith, and reprised it somewhat by using Kamen's opening title theme from the same series, which contains the same basic musical structure, as the background music for the Revolution of Cephiro in Knights 3.
Well, I had the idea of using some of the BGM from one of the From the Earth to the Moon episodes themselves as a theme for Corwin and Utena together, but there was a small snag: HBO never released the show's instrumental score. There was a soundtrack CD, but the only symphonic music it contained were Kamen's opening and ending. So I thought I was stuck. I could - and did - cite the music according to its place in the episode in question, but anybody out there who didn't have the series on DVD (and really, if you have any interest in the golden age of space exploration, you ought to, but) was going to be out of luck.
Until it hit me yesterday: Maybe the composer who did that episode has a website.
And indeed he does. If you go to the Credits page and scroll down to the listing for From the Earth to the Moon, you'll find little links for two samples of his music from the ep in question, and one of them is the first 1:53 of the exact bit I used (starting, by a nice coincidence, right where I chose to start). It's only a sample, but it's enough to give you the idea. (Despite the ID3 tags, I've found no evidence that such a compilation ever saw public release. I'd be interested in getting hold of a copy if it had.)
As an aside, the guy has the best name ever: "Mason Daring". I say ", Test Pilot"; Wedge prefers ", Private Eye", but either way, we are agreed. :)
So there it is. In its native habitat, it's the theme music for, of all things, the Apollo Lunar Module. In UF, it's Corwin and Utena's love theme.
