"A Hypothetical Moment..."

... or, "In Which Gryphon Acknowledges that Vincent Hayg'n Has a Point"

"I understand where you're coming from, Mr. Hayg'n. I really do. A lot of us watched what was happening on Earth in the 1990s and found ourselves thinking, God. If only the place would have a nice alien contact. Or an invasion. At this point that wouldn't be so bad. I think we had the idea that the place would be visited by a sort of benevolent space British, who would come and give us a hot beverage and something good on television. And look what happened. Instead of us ending up with a bunch of cool stuff from your pop culture, you guys got Salusian Idol. I'm sorry about that, I really am. And for the record I think it's entirely unfair that your women prefer Earthmen."

All right, who let Simon Cowell spread his musical freakshow off-planet?

There are benefits, though; it gives crusty old Salusians something to complain about and blame the decline of Salusian society on, which is about the only thing keeping crusty old types going for the most part...

The weird thing is, I'm old enough to remember a very similar show. Ed McMahon's Star Search had acts easily as dubious as those I've seen in action when I've gone over to my mom's place and Idol or what's-it-called the other show that's just like it or the other one that's just like that is on. The only real difference I've been able to detect is that the host of the old version was much more genial.

And don't even get me started about Puttin' On the Hits. Light Entertainment has been shit for decades, is all I'm saying.

Huh. I remember Star Search. Didn't watch it much, but I remember it.

“They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.”
